REDCURRANT

Redcurrant is a puff-shoulder galore vintage-y linen blouse. Because I want to look

fancy in the scorching heat of summer too!

I have taken care to choose techniques suitable for linen yarn, working in plain stocki-
nette, using increases and decreases for shaping, and folded hems as finishing. The top
is worked seamlessly in the round, and only worked flat to shape the neckline. Sleeves
and body are worked together.

Yarn Gauge
Växbo Lin Lingarn 12/2 (100% linen, 414 16 sts x 26 rnds = 10 cm / 4” in stocki-
m / 453 yds, 100 g). Yarn is held double. nette stitch.

Alternatives: Karin Oberg Kalinka, Mid-

winter Yarns Lithuanian Linen. Katia Lino Sizes

Construction
Abbreviations This linen blouse is worked seamlessly*
decr: decrease(d) in the round, bottom-up. Both the body
k: knit and the sleeves are cast on provisionally
k2tog: k 2 sts together for a folded hem. After the length of the
kfb: k front and back of st (tutorial) body and sleeves have been worked indi-
m: marker(s) vidually, they are worked together in the
p: purl round.
p2tog: p 2 sts together

Directions
1. Body
With below gauge-size needles, holding
yarn double, provisionally cast on (120,
136, 152) (168, 184, 200) (216, 232, 248)
sts, pm and join in the rnd.
Work folded hem as follows:
K 3 cm in the rnd.
Next rnd: p all sts.
Change to gauge-size needles.
K another 3 cm in the rnd.
Fold first 3 cm up so wrong sides are
together to form the hem.
K each st together with a st from cast-on.
K in the rnd for 30 cm.
2. Sleeves
The sleeve cuffs are quite snug, and linen
is not very elastic. For bigger cuffs you can
cast on more sts. Then later, replace the
same number of kfb with k to get the cor-
rect final st count.
With gauge-size needles, holding yarn
double, provisionally cast on (36, 36, 38)
(46, 48, 48) (59, 60, 62) sts, pm and join
in the rnd.
Work folded hem as follows:
Work 2 cm in the rnd.
Next rnd: p all sts.
Work another 2 cm in the rnd.
Fold first 2 cm up so wrong sides are
together to form the hem.
K each st together with a st from cast-on.
Next rnd: kfb to end, = (72, 72, 76) (92, 96,
96) (118, 120, 124) sts.
K in the round for 8 cm.
K to end and put the next (4, 4, 6) (6, 8,
8) (10, 12, 14) sts on hold.
Work second sleeve the same way.

3. Join body and sleeves
This section decreases sts for the body and
the sleeves along the p1tbl faux seam.
To widen shoulders, swap some of the last
Rnd 1 with Rnd 5, and Rnd 2 with Rnd 4 (adds
1.3 cm for every rnd swapped).
K to last (2, 2, 3) (3, 4, 4) (5, 6, 7) sts
of body, *put the next (4, 4, 6) (6,
8, 8) (10, 12, 14) sts on hold, pm,
work across sleeve sts, pm*, k(56,
64, 70) (78, 84, 92) (98, 104, 110), repeat
*-*, k(19, 23, 26) (30, 33, 37) (40, 43,
46), pm for beginning of rnd (this should
be 9 sts before centre front).
= (56, 64, 70) (78, 84, 92) (98, 104, 110) sts
per back/front.
= (68, 68, 70) (86, 88, 88) (108, 108, 110) sts
per sleeve.
Sizes 2-9 only:
Work the following 2 rnds (-, 2, 3) (3, 5,
8) (9, 11, 12) times:
Rnd 1: (k to 3 sts before m, ssk, p1tbl,
slm, k2tog, k to 2 sts before m, ssk, slm,
p1tbl, k2tog) twice, k to end, = 8 sts decr
for sleeves and body.
Rnd 2: (k to 3 sts before m, ssk, p1tbl,
slm, k to m, slm, p1tbl, k2tog) twice, k to
end, = 4 sts decr for body.
Sizes 1-7 only:
Work the following 2 rnds (4, 3, 4) (6, 5,
2) (2, -, -) times:
Rnd 3: like Rnd 1, = 8 sts decr.
Rnd 4: work as established to end.
Sizes 1-3 only:
Work the following 2 rnds (5, 4, 3) times:
Rnd 5: (k to m, p1tbl, slm, k2tog, k to 3
sts before m, ssk, slm, p1tbl) twice, k to
end, = 4 sts decr for sleeves.

4. Neckline shaping
This section is worked flat while decreasing
for the sleeves and neckline. A total of 32
neckline sts are decreased (16 on each side).
Bind off 18 sts for front neck, (k to m,
p1tbl, slm, k2tog, k to 3 sts before m,
ssk, slm, p1tbl) twice, k to end, = 18 sts
decr for front and 4 sts decr for sleeves.
= (15, 16, 16) (17, 17, 18) (19, 20, 21) sts per front.
= (48) (64) (82) sts per sleeve.
Work the following 2 rows twice:
Row 1 (ws): p2, ssp, (p to 1 st before
m, k1tbl, slm, p to m, slm) twice, p to
last 4 sts, p2tog, p2, = 2 sts decr for neck.
Row 2 (rs): k2, k2tog, (k to 1 st before
m, p1tbl, slm, k2tog, k to 2 sts before m,
ssk, slm, p1tbl) twice, k to last 4 sts, ssk,
k2, = 6 sts decr for neck and sleeves.
Work the following 2 rows 3 times:
Row 3 (ws): (p to 1 st before m, k1tbl,
slm, p to m, slm) twice, p to end.
Row 4 (rs): Like Row 2, = 6 sts decr.
= (8, 9, 9) (10, 10, 11) (12, 13, 14) sts per front.
= (38) (54) (72) sts per sleeve.
Sizes 1-3 only:
Row 5 (ws): Like Row 3.
Row 6 (rs): (k to 1 st before m, p1tbl,
slm, k2tog, k to 2 sts before m, ssk, slm,
p1tbl) twice, k to end, 4 sleeve sts decr.
= 36 sts per sleeve.
Sizes 4-6 only:
Row 7 (ws): Like Row 3.
Row 8 (rs): (k to 1 st before m, p1tbl,

to end, = 18 sts decr per sleeve.
= 36 sts per sleeve.
All sizes:
Row 9 (ws): Like Row 3.
Row 10 (rs): (k to 1 st before m, p1tbl,
slm, k2tog to m, slm, p1tbl) twice, k to
end, = (18) (18) (36) sts decr per sleeve.
= (18) (18) (36) sts per sleeve.
Sizes 7-9 Work Rows 9-10 once more,
= 18 sts decr per sleeve.
= 18 sts per sleeve for all sizes.
5. Front and back
In this section the right front, left front, right
back and left back are worked separately.
Right front
Rs: k across right front to 1 st before m,
p1tbl. Put sleeve sts on hold, turn.
Work the following 2 rows 4 times:
Ws: k1tbl, p to end.
Rs: k to last st, p1tbl.
Break yarn.
Transfer back sts onto gauge-size nee-
dles and rejoin yarn to work ws of back.
Ws: k1tbl, p(11, 12, 12) (13, 13, 14) (15, 16,
17), bind off 24 sts, p to last st, k1tbl.
Right back
Work the following 2 rows 4 times:
Rs: p1tbl, k to last 3 sts, ssk, k1, = 1 st decr.
Ws: p to last st, k1tbl.
= (8, 9, 9) (10, 10, 11) (12, 13, 14) sts.
With rs of right front facing rs of right back,
three-needle bind off the two together:
Align the pairs of (8, 9, 9) (10, 10, 11) (12,
13, 14) sts such that the front and back
sts are each on one needle tip that are
parallel to one another. Use a third nee-
dle to three-needle bind-off together.

Left back
Rejoin yarn to work rs of left back.
Work the following 2 rows 4 times:
Rs: k1, k2tog, k to last back st, p1tbl, = 1
st decr.
Ws: k1tbl, p to end.
= (8, 9, 9) (10, 10, 11) (12, 13, 14) sts.
Break yarn.
Put left sleeve sts on hold, and rejoin
yarn to work rs of left front, leaving a
circa 50 cm long tail.
Left front
Work the following 2 rows 4 times:
Rs: p1tbl, k to end.
Ws: p to last st, k1tbl.
Work Rs once more.
With rs of left front facing rs of left back,
three-needle bind off the two together:
Graft the live shoulder cap sts to the
body, so that the purl-stitches of the
shoulder edge are concealed on the
inside. I have made an imperfect tutorial

6. Neckline
Sts are picked up at a rate of 2 sts per 3 rows
and 1 st per 1 st. It will look neater if you pick
up sts 2-3 rows or stitches from the edge,
rather than the usual 1 row or stitch from
the edge, as this will hide the decreases.
Starting at the right shoulder seam, with
rs facing, gauge-size needles and yarn
held double, pu&k 9 sts for right back,
24 sts for back neck, 9 sts for left back,
and 18 sts each for left front, front neck
and right front, pm and join in the rnd,
= 96 sts.
K 2 rnds.
Change to below-gauge size needles.
K 2 rnds, p 1 rnd, k 2 rnds.
Change back to gauge-size needles.
K 2 rnds.
Fold hem to inside of work. Either graft
live stitches to inside of work or bind off
all and sew to inside of work.
7. Finishing
Three-needle bind off the underarms,
weave in all ends, soak for at least 30
minutes, squeeze out all the water by
hand and with a towel. Lay flat to dry.
