50 Self-Regulation

Coping Strategies
students can use in the classroom
Thank You!
Thank you for downloading this resource!
I love creating tools that invite young people to voice
& shape their authentic, strong, vulnerable & brave selves
and that hopefully make your job easier (and more fun), too!

Joy to You!
About This Resource
When I designed this resource, my goal was to create a comprehensive list of doable self-regulation coping
skills that students could use in the classroom setting. The strategies presented in the checklist, poster, task
cards, and spinner craft help students to self-regulate, focus, ask for help, and return to a calm place, so
that they can be ready to learn and get along with others.
Teaching children self-regulation tools helps their thinking part of their brain, the pre-fontal cortex, to
remain engaged and in charge. Many of our students need extra support in this area, often coming to school
already in a state of fear, worry & chronic stress. Until we help students manage and relate -with kindness &
compassion- to these challenging emotional experiences, they will not be ready to learn the academic tools
that students need to be successful in and out of school.
Teachers, school counselors, and school social workers can use this resource as a as part of their classroom
management and/or social-emotional curriculum, as a small group activity, or as an individual intervention for
students who need additional support with self-regulation. The checklist can also be helpful when devising
Behavioral Intervention Plans, providing solution-focused, pro-active tools to replace negative behaviors with
positive ones, that are even transferrable outside of the classroom. The checklist, poster, task cards and
spinner craft are also perfect additions to any Take A Break, Peace Corner, Zen Zone and Calm Down
Station areas in a classroom.

User's Guide
How to Assemble Spinners
1. Choose whether you want to use a Pre-Made spinner or the DIY Spinner Craft. Also
choose whether you want the spinner in color or in black/white (fun for coloring!). Then
print.
2.If you are using the DIY Spinner Craft, cut and paste the "I Feel" pieces onto the middle,
smaller wheel and the "Strategy" pieces onto the bottom, larger wheel, and let them dry,
before cutting out the completed wheels. (This will create cleaner edges.) Also, choose
which Cover wheel you'd like to use, and cut that out, too.
Note: if you'd like more options for the "I Feel" middle wheel section, use the Customizable
pieces (color: p. 27-28 , black/white: p. 59-60).
3. Once all three wheels are cut out, line them up (bottom "Strategy Wheel" on the bottom,
middle "Feelings Wheel in the middle, and top "Cover Wheel" on the top. Insert a fastener in
the middle, through the center of the 3 wheels, bending the fastener back to hold the
stack in place.
4. Start using "My What Can Help Me" Spinner!
Additional Tips
1. Print and cut out the task cards, punch a hole at the top left corner of each card and
attach to a binder/book ring for easy storage and usability (so students can flip through
ideas.)
2. Place a spinner or two and copies of the checklist on a clipboard in your Peace Corner or
Calm Down area, and encourage students to run through the different suggestions, picking
out which tools they would like to use.
3. Encourage students to practice self-regulation strategies when they are calm, so that
they are more likely to use their tools when they really need help.

User's Guide
Assembly Instructions for the Dice:
1. Choose which set and/or individual cubes you'd like to use and
print, single sided. There are 6 sets to choose from: small full
color, large full color, small light color, large light color, small
black/white, and large black/white. Any type of paper will do,
but light card stock is more durable than regular copy paper and
folds easier than heavy card stock.
2. Cut out dice/cube along its border (solid line).
3. Mountain fold all inside, dotted lines, including the tabs.
4. Apply glue or tape on the tabs.
5. Join each tab to the adjacent face, so that each tab connects
1under the face of the dice/cube, to form a 3-D square.
