Types of Questions: person, object, event, experience, concept

Band Descriptors

Grammatical Range and Accuracy:

● Make sure to review grammar topics.


o verb tense (past, present, future)
o prepositions
o SVA
● Do grammar exercises.

● Use a variety of sentence structures.

● Don’t be overly concerned with minor grammar mistakes which can


consequently compromise your fluency.
● You need to practice.

Lexical Resource:

● Make sure to attend the vocabulary classes and exams.

● Do vocabulary exercises.

● Watch videos on IELTS Speaking Test to be familiar with the kind and
level of vocabulary range examinees are using.
● You must be self-aware of repetitive use of certain words. Record
yourself while doing self-practice.
● Avoid parroting the question.

● Please don’t use hifalutin words especially if you are not sure how to
use them or uncomfortable using them.
● Use Google to search for the meaning of the words and how to use
them in sentences. Try to consciously practice using these words so
you’d feel more comfortable using them in the long run.
● You may use idiomatic expressions, but it’s always supposed to be
within proper context.
● Familiarize yourself with descriptive words (adjectives, adverbs) to
describe people, everyday objects, and events.

Pronunciation:

● You don’t need to pretend a foreign accent.

● Neutralize any Filipinoisms (f and p sounds, v and b sounds, t and th


sounds, distinct vowel sounds)
● Reading out loud will help.

● Tongue twisters will help as well.

● Training your articulators will help you because pronunciation is


developed through habit. It should become automatic.
● Don’t be monotonous.

● Speak audibly.

● Don’t talk too fast.

● Don’t talk too slow either.

Fluency and Coherence:

● You need to sound certain with your statements.

● Minimize rising intonation.

● Fillers like ‘uhms’ are natural and okay but if it’s excessive, then it will
compromise fluency.
● Minimize awkward pauses/ dead air.

● If you need to pause for a few seconds to gather your thoughts, please
do so.
● Always be organized in your discussion.

● Use conjunctions to connect your statements and ideas.

● Don’t beat around the bush.

● Be concise in your statements.

● Note which questions need answers that should be elaborated. Not


all questions need elaboration. Pay attention to body language.
● Answering questions in IELTS will require your memory and creativity.

● You must train yourself to think fast. (IMPROVS)

● You need to practice.
