About the Programme
According to WHO data, the number
and proportion of people aged 60
years and older in the population is
increasing. In 2019, the number of
people aged 60 years and older was
1 billion. This number will increase
to 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion
by 2050. This means that there is a
fast-growing need for healthcare staff
to have relevant up-to-date training
and knowledge within elderly care, to
meet the needs of an ageing society.
This Royal College of Physicians
of Ireland Professional Diploma
in Geriatric Medicine, delivered in
conjunction with iheed, is a new
9-month online learning programme,
designed specifically to cater for busy
healthcare professionals. Drawing
on the expertise of national and
international experts in geriatric care,
this programme provides learners with
advanced knowledge and skills to
ensure patients a fulfilled later life.
The program emphasises a patient -
centered approach to clinical decision
making in medicine for the older
person. It provides a supportive,
richly informative, and accessible
educational opportunity for healthcare
professionals wishing to upskill or
refresh their understanding of how
common geriatric conditions present
and are managed.
The program aims to develop clinically
focused diagnostic skills through the
use of interactive patient cases. It
allows for opportunities to practice
and develop diagnostic skills in a
highly engaging format. It enhances
the skills required to identify
important clinical features to develop
a diagnosis and formulate effective
management plans for patients.
