DME Heavy-Duty Engine Receives Certification in China

CHINA | An academic and industrial consortium collaborating
on a DME vehicle project in China has recently received
government certification for a DME fueled heavy-duty diesel
engine satisfying Euro 6 emission standards. The consortium,
led by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, includes Weichai Power
(industrial, heavy-duty vehicle and powertrain manufacturer),
China Jinggong (vehicle manufacturer), Shanghai Diesel
(diesel engine manufacturer), Xi’An Jiaotong University and
Shandong University.

The engine, a modified 6 liter 135 kW WP6 common rail

injection diesel engine from Weichai Power, is being
demonstrated on short-haul heavy-duty street sweeper and
refuse trucks. Three engine and two vehicle prototypes have
been produced, with the WP6DME engines using a newly
developed EP1FA-00 high-pressure pump in place of the
Bosch CP2.2 used in the base diesel engine.

The project is part of a government funded national high-tech The DME vehicle project is supported by the 863 Program – the Chinese national
R&D program (known as the “863 Program”) that plays an high-tech R&D program
important role in the development of high technology in China.
Certification of the Euro 6 compliant engine is an important milestone in the project that project leaders hope will interest vehicle
manufacturers in China given the relatively large-scale commercial production of DME that already exists in the country.

First and Largest Commercial DME Fuel Market
Zhangjiagang, China
With annual production of almost 5 million TPY China remains the world’s largest
producer and consumer of DME fuel. More than 90% of DME produced in China is
blended with LPG for use in residential cooking and heating applications.

Air quality issues (e.g. smog, PM 2.5, NOx), increasingly stringent heavy-duty vehicle
emission regulations, widespread availability, and attractive pricing (DME was
approximately 35% less expensive than diesel in 2014) make DME an increasingly
attractive, relevant and practical alternative fuel option in one of the world’s largest
vehicle markets.

The first national standard for DME use as an automotive fuel (GB/T26605-2011) was
introduced in 2012.

2015 European Methanol Policy Forum and DME Workshop

BELGIUM | The IDA hosted a DME Workshop as part
of the Methanol Institute’s inaugural European
Methanol Policy Forum in Brussels from 13 – 14
October.

The pre-conference DME Workshop featured senior

representatives from a number of those companies
most active in the introduction of DME as a fuel,
providing updates on projects and initiatives underway
in Europe, North America, and elsewhere, and outlining
their perspectives on the practical opportunities related
to DME use in transportation, power, and other fuel
applications. Content from the event is available to Previous DME Briefing in Brussels featured a Volvo VNL 300 DME heavy-duty truck
members on the IDA's online portal.

9th Asian DME Conference

CHINA | The 9th edition of the Asian DME Conference was organized by the China DME Association and Shanghai Jiao Tong
University from 16 – 18 October in Wuzhen, an ancient city on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River known for its extensive network
of canals.

In addition to presentations by speakers from China, Japan, Korea and the United States, the program also included an optional site
visit program to DME technical centers in Shanghai. On the Shanghai Jiao Tong University campus delegates were given guided tours
of the university's Engine Research Center and the Alternative Fuel Automobile Branch DME laboratory. Following this, delegates
visited a local company doing retrofits of medium duty diesel engines to LNG, that is interested in possibly expanding this work to
include DME.
