10 Filipino scientists/inventors and their


contributions to our society.

Teodoro Agoncillo
Albert Einstein, one of the greatest physicists in history, was born on 14 March 1879.
He is known for the theory of relativity and also the Quantum Theory of Light.
The Invention of these two theories is considered an essential invention as both these
tTeodoro Agoncillo is a noted Filipino historian, essayist, poet and author. In 1985, he
received the National Scientist Award for his contribution to Philippine
historiography. He is known as a nationalist author whose books, essays, and poetry
often reflects the point of view of the Filipino masses.

INVENTIONS:
Ramon Barba
Ramon Barba is a Filipino scientist, inventor and horticulturist who is known for his
successful experiment on the inducement of flowering of mango trees by spraying
them with ethrel and potassium nitrate.

INVENTION: inducing the flowering of mango trees by spraying


them with ethrel and potassium nitrate.

Paulo Campos
Paulo Campos is a Filipino physician and scientist who is considered “The
Father of Nuclear Medicine in the Philippines”.

INVENTION: Nuclear Medicine.

Geminiano De Ocampo
Geminiano De Ocampo is a Filipino scientist and ophthalmologist who is
considered as the “Father of Modern Philippine Ophthalmology”. He was
also an inventor who invented the De Ocampo Corneal Dissector.

INVENTION: De Ocampo Corneal Dissector in 1956

Pedro Escuro
Pedro Escuro is a Filipino scientist who is considered as the “Father of Philippine
Rice Breeding Program”

INVENTION: Produced improved rice varieties such as C4-63, C4-137,


C4-113, C-168, C22, UPL-Ri-5, PSB Rc 16, and PSB RC 36
Raul Fabella
Raul Fabella is a Filipino social scientist and economist who received the National
Scientist award in 2011.

INVENTION: Contributed immensely in the field of policy regarding


exchange rate, currency undervaluation , tax and public
expenditure, and land reform

Edgardo Gomez
Edgardo Gomez is a Filipino scientist and biologist who received the national scientist
award in 2014.

INVENTIONS: Research on invertebrate biology and ecology

Bienvenido Juliano
Bienvenido Juliano is a Filipino scientist who received the National
Scientist award in 2000.

INVENTION: Authored or co-authored over 370 scientific papers on


rice chemistry especially the properties of starch and protein in
relation to rice grain quality.

Francisco Santos
Francisco Santos is a Filipino scientist and biochemist.

INVENTION: Demonstrated the food value of


sweet potato especially its use as anti-beriberi.
Gavino Trono Jr.
Gavino Trono Jr. is a Filipino scientist who made notable research on tropical
marine phycology with a particular focus on seaweed biodiversity.

INVENTION: Conducted studies on the culture of seaweeds such as


Eucheuma denticulatum, Kappaphycus alvarezii, Gracilaria spp.,
Caulerpa lentillifera, and Halymenia durvillei for coastal
communities
