P-N Junction Semiconductor
What is a P - N junction semiconductor and how is it formed?
The P-N junction semiconductor is a combination of P type semiconductor with N type semiconductor to
achieve the practical utility of both. It's formed, when a P type semi conductor is joined to an N type
semiconductor.
menerus sampai keseimbangan tercapai. Pergerakan elektron dan hole ini akan
menyebabkan arus difusi.

Forward Bias
What is Forward bias and how does it occur?
Forward bias occurs when the positive terminal of battery is connected to
the P region and the negative terminal of battery is connected to the N
region. In this condition what happens is the positive terminal repels the
holes towards the junction and the negative terminal repels the electrons
towards the junction. Due to this repulsion, the depletion region or space
region narrows down.
3. Schottky Diodes
Dioda yang dapat beroperasi dengan
waktu switching yang cepat disebut
dioda Schottky. Drop tegangan yang
dianggap maju sangat rendah.
Aplikasi dari jenis dioda ini dapat
dilihat dalam rangkaian clamping
yang cukup cepat.
Dioda ini dapat dilihat beroperasi
dalam rentang gigahertz. Ini dapat
dipilih selama aplikasi frekuensi
tinggi.
4) Shockley Diodes
mulai mengisi daya.
Ketika tegangan di sepanjang kapasitor menjadi setara dengan tegangan break over dioda
Shockley, kapasitor mulai membongkar daya.
5) Varactor or Varicap Diode
"variable capacitance" (kapasitansi variabel).
Prinsip Kerja
frekuensi variabel (VFO).
Penalaan Filter: Dalam rangkaian filter frekuensi tinggi, diode varactor digunakan untuk
mengubah karakteristik filter, memungkinkan penyesuaian respons frekuensi filter secara
elektronik.
6) BARITT Diode
Diode BARITT (Barrier Injection Transit-Time) adalah jenis diode semikonduktor yang digunakan
terutama dalam aplikasi elektronik frekuensi mikro (mikrowave). Diode ini bekerja berdasarkan
prinsip waktu transit dari injeksi carrier (pembawa muatan) melalui sebuah potensial barrier
(penghalang potensial).
bergerak melalui bahan semikonduktor.

• Rangkaian Penyearah Frekuensi Tinggi: Dalam aplikasi penyearah daya, PIN diode
Karakteristik Utama Fast Recovery Diode
rendah.
Aplikasi Fast Recovery Diode
portabel.
Pemilihan Fast Recovery Diode
Hal ini menghasilkan karakteristik I-

proses konversi arus bolak-balik (AC) menjadi arus searah (DC).
Penyearah Setengah Gelombang (Half-Wave
Rectifier)
beban.
• Operasi: Diode hanya mengizinkan salah satu siklus gelombang AC (biasanya siklus
positif) melewati ke beban, sementara siklus negatif diblokir. Akibatnya, outputnya
digunakan. Output DC yang dihasilkan memiliki riak yang tinggi.
Penyearah Gelombang Penuh dengan
Transformator Tap Tengah (Full-Wave Rectifier
with Center-Tapped Transformer)
• Operasi: Satu diode menghantarkan selama setengah siklus positif, sementara diode
lain menghantarkan selama setengah siklus negatif.

magnitudo:
Vdc = 0.636(5 V) = 3.18 V

Diode Limiters/Clippers Operation
The diode limiter is the other name of diode clipper circuits, these circuits reshape the
input waveform by removing some part from positive half or negative half according to
requirements.
Diodes clipper circuits can be used for the modification of the input signal according to the
load requirements, the most used diodes in these circuits are Schottky and Zener diode
with the general diode.
The working of the diodes clipper circuits is also similar to the rectification by the diode.
Type of Diode Clipper:
1) Positive Diode Clipping Circuit
2) Negative Clipping Circuit
3) Clipping of Both Half Cycles
4) Positive Biased Diode Clipper
5) Negative Biased Diode Clipper
6) Diode Clipping of Different Bias levels
7) Zener Diode Clipping
8) Full-wave Zener Diode Clipping
1. Positive Clipping Circuit
The positive in the name of circuit suggest that this circuit will eliminate the positive cycle
of the input signal.
Due to forward biasing, the diode will operate only in the positive half, since the operating
voltage for the diode is 0.7V so there will be only 0.7V loss across resistance and other will
convert into the DC
When negative half comes on the diode it does not work and provides higher resistance like
open switch resistance
2. Negative Clipping Circuit
It will eliminate the negative half of the input signal.
When the positive half of the input signal comes on the terminals due to reverse biasing
there is no change in the signal due to higher value resistance
When the negative half of the wave comes, in this case, the diode is forward biased, so
current will pass through it and the voltage drop across this diode will be 0.7 volts
3. Clipping of Both Half Cycles
If we connected two diodes in inverse
parallel as shown, then both the positive
and negative half cycles would be
clipped as diode D1 clips the positive half
cycle of the sinusoidal input waveform
while diode D2 clips the negative half
cycle
4. Positive Biased Diode Clipper
The level to which an ac voltage is limited can be adjusted by adding a bias voltage. VBIAS,
in series with the diode.
The voltage at point A must equal VBIAS + 0.7 V before the diode will become forward-
biased and conduct
Once the diode begins to conduct, the voltage at point A is limited to VBIAS + 0.7 V so that
all input voltage above this level is clipped off
5. Negative Biased Diode Clipper
To limit a voltage to a specified negative level, the diode and bias voltage must be
connected as in Below Figure.
In this case, the voltage at point A must go below -VBIAS - 0.7 V to forward-bias the diode
and initiate limiting action as shown below:
6. Diode Clipping of Different Bias Levels
When the voltage of the positive half cycle reaches +4.7 V, diode D1 conducts and limits the
waveform at +4.7 V. Diode D2 does not conduct until the voltage reaches –6.7 V. Therefore,
all positive voltages above +4.7 V and negative voltages below –6.7 V are automatically
clipped.
it prevents the output signal from exceeding preset voltage limits for both half cycles of
the input waveform, which could be an input from a noisy sensor or the positive and
negative supply rails of a power supply.
7. Zener Diode Clipping
It is acting like a biased diode clipping circuit with the bias voltage being equal to the
zener breakdown voltage
In this circuit during the positive half of the waveform the zener diode is reverse biased so
the waveform is clipped at the zener voltage, VZD1
During the negative half cycle the zener acts like a normal diode with its usual 0.7V
junction value.
8. Full-wave Zener Diode Clipping
The output waveform from full wave zener diode clipping circuits resembles that of
the previous voltage biased diode clipping circuit. The output waveform will be
clipped at the VZD+ 0.7V forward volt drop of the other diode
For example, the positive half cycle will be clipped at the sum of zener diode,
ZD1+0.7V (0.7V is from ZD2) and vice versa for the negative half cycle.
Diode Limiter/Clipper Application
These circuits are used to vary the physical structure of the input wave according to our
project requirements. Ex: the sine waveform can be changed into the square, rectangle or
any other shape
Transients currents are very dangerous for any circuits that can damage our complete
circuit, to stop all these transients current clipper, diodes are effective and can remove
these transients
Clamper
Clamper
The clamping network is one that will “clamp” a signal to a different DC level. The
network must have a capacitor, a diode, and a resistive element, but it can also
employ an independent DC supply to introduce an additional shift (biasing).
The magnitude of R and C must be chosen such that the time constant τ = RC is
large enough to ensure that the voltage across the capacitor does not discharge
significantly during the interval the diode is nonconducting. Throughout the
analysis we will assume that for all practical purposes the capacitor will fully
charge or discharge in five time constants. Classification of Clamper Circuits:
1) Positive Clamper circuit
2) Negative Clamper circuit
3) Positive clamper circuit with biasing (Positive and Negative)
4) Negative Clamper circuit with biasing (Positive and Negative)
1. Positive Clamper Circuit
Initially, the positive half of the applied input signal reverse biases the diode but the
capacitor is not still charged. So, at this period of time output will not be considered.
For the negative half of the AC signal, the capacitor now gets fully charged up to the peak
of the AC signal Vm but with inverse polarity. This negative half forward biases the diode
that results in the flow of the forward current through the diode. The next positive half
then reverse biases the diode due to which signal will appear at the output.
Cont...
At the beginning of the positive half of the AC signal, the diode is in the non-conducting
state that results in discharging of capacitor charge. So, at the output, we will have the
summation of the voltage stored across the capacitor and applied the AC input signal. This
is given by:
2. Negative Clamper Circuit
At the time when positive half of the AC input is applied, the diode comes to forward
bias condition that results in no-load current at the output. However, a forward current
flows through the diode that charges the capacitor to the peak of the ac signal but again
with inverse polarity. The capacitor here is charged up to the forward biased condition of
the diode.
Cont...
When negative half of the AC signal is applied, the diode now becomes reverse biased. This
allows load current to appear at the output of the circuit. Now, this non-conducting state of
the diode discharges the capacitor. So, at the output, a summation of capacitor voltage
along with the input voltage is achieved. Hence at the output, we have:
3.1 Positive Clamper Circuit with POSITIVE Biasing
When positive half of the input signal is applied, the diode is reverse biased due to AC
input but is forward biased due to bias voltage VB
The diode conducts when the bias voltage is greater than the AC input. This forward
current through the diode charges the capacitor but with the bias voltage. As the AC input
exceeds bias voltage, the diode now gets reverse biased and hence conduction through the
diode stops.
Cont...
On the application of the negative half of the input signal, the diode is now forward biased
due to both AC input and bias voltage starts conducting. This charges the capacitor with
voltage summation of AC input along with bias voltage. Hence such an output voltage level
is achieved.
At the beginning of the positive half of the AC signal, the diode is in the non-conducting
state that results in discharging of capacitor charge. So, at the output, we will have the
summation of the voltage stored across the capacitor and applied the AC input signal.
3.2 Positive Clamper Circuit with NEGATIVE Biasing
At the time of positive half of the
AC signal, the diode gets reverse
biased by both AC input and bias
voltage. Due to this current flows
through the load and maintain the
voltage level simultaneously.
Cont...
At the time of the negative half, the diode is in the forward biased condition due to
AC input but is in reverse biased condition due to bias voltage. So, the diode
conducts only when the AC input exceeds the bias voltage. This charges the
capacitor hence we get a shifted signal at the output.
4.1 Negative Clamper Circuit with POSITIVE Biasing
The signal is somewhat raised to a positive level due to the positively applied bias voltage
When positive half of the AC signal is applied, the diode is in the forward biased state due
to AC supply but is reverse biased because of bias voltage. So, the diode conducts when AC
supply exceeds bias voltage.
Cont...
During the negative half, the diode is now in reverse biased state by cause of both the AC
supply and bias voltage. This non-conducting state of the diode, discharges the capacitor.
Thus, the voltage across the capacitor appears at the output.
4.1 Negative Clamper Circuit with NEGATIVE Biasing
At the time of positive half of AC input,
the diode gets forward biased by the
cause of AC input and bias voltage. This
starts conduction through the diode.
Resultantly charges the capacitor.
Cont...
At the time of the negative half, the diode gets reverse biased but will still conduct
due to forward biased condition applied by the bias voltage. The diode current flows
until the bias voltage is more than the AC input supply. The time when AC input
exceeds bias voltage, the diode gets reverse biased and the capacitor discharges.
Thus the voltage across capacitor appears at the load.

Zener Diode
What is a Zener diode?
A Zener diode is a silicon pn junction device that allows current to flow not only in the
forward direction like a typical silicon or germanium diode, but also in the reverse
direction
If the voltage is greater than the breakdown voltage known as Zener knee voltage or
simply Zener voltage
How does a Zener diode operate?
Zener diodes act like normal diodes when forward-biased. However, they are designed to
allow current to flow in reverse once the reverse voltage equals its rated Zener Voltage.
Unlike ordinary rectifier diodes, which are never intended to be operated at or near
breakdown, a Zener diode is designed to operate in the breakdown region. Breakdown of a
diode happens when you apply a reverse bias voltage across the diode.
Cont...
A Zener diode operating in breakdown acts as a voltage regulator because it maintains a
nearly constant voltage, which is equal to the Zener voltage, across its terminals over a
specified range of reverse-current values. This constant voltage drop across the Zener diode
produced by reverse breakdown is represented by a DC voltage symbol.
Breakdown Characteristics
As the reverse voltage/VR is increased, the reverse current/IR also increases until it reaches
the Zener knee current/IZK
This time, the breakdown effect begins. The Zener impedance/ZZ, which is the internal
Zener resistance, begins to decrease as the reverse current increases rapidly.
Cont...
From the bottom of the knee, the Zener breakdown voltage (VZ) remains relatively constant
although it increases slightly as the Zener current (IZ), increases. VZ is usually specified at a
value of the Zener current known as the test current.
Zener Diode
If the voltage V across zener diode less than Vz but greater than 0 with the polarity
indicated the zener diode is in off state and the equivalent circuit is at open circuit
Step 1
Determine the state of the Zener diode by removing it from the network and
calculating the voltage cross the resulting open circuit.
Step 2
Substitute the appropriate equivalent circuit and solve for the desired unknowns
If V >= Vz, the Zener diode is “on” state
If V < Vz, the Zener diode is “off” state
Example:
a) RL = 1,2K. VL, VR, Iz, Pz ?
b) RL = 3K. VL, VR, Iz, Pz ?
b) RL = 3K. VL, VR, Iz, Pz ?
2. Fixed Vi and Variable RL
Due to the offset voltage VZ, there is a specific range of resistor values (and therefore load current)
which will ensure that the Zener is in the “on” state. Too small a load resistance RL will result in a
voltage VL across the load resistor less than VZ , and the Zener device will be in the “off” state.
To determine the minimum load resistance of Figure below that will turn the Zener diode on, simply
calculate the value of RL that will result in a load voltage VL = VZ. That is,
Once the diode is in the “on” state, the voltage across R remains fixed at:
and
The maximum value of Vi is limited by the maximum Zener current IZM. Since IZM = IR - IL,
Since IL is fixed at VZ/RL and IZM is the maximum value of IZ, the maximum Vi
is defined by
Example
Zener in Series
Two or more reference levels can be established by placing Zener diodes in series as
shown in Figure below. As long as Vi is greater than the sum of VZ1 and VZ2, both
diodes will be in the “on” state and the three reference voltages will be available.
As the name suggests, the voltage Tripler is the circuit which will produce the
output whose multiplication factor will be triple of an input voltage. By adding
another diode and capacitor section into the Half-Wave voltage doubler it will
become voltage Tripler circuit. The Following is Working of Voltage Tripler:
During the positive half-cycle: Diode D1 is forward biased and diodes D2 and D3 are
reverse biased. Hence, the diode D1 allows Capacitor one C1 to charge it up to Vp.
Cont...
During the negative half-cycle: Diode D2 is forward biased and diodes D1 and D3 are
reverse biased. Hence, the diode D2 allows C2 to charge up to 2VP. This is because
the capacitor C1 is discharged during the negative half cycle. Therefore, C1 which
was charged during positive cycle up to Vp is now discharging into C2 and also C2 is
getting Vp from supply due to forward bias of D2 which means C2 is having Charges
from both sides supply and capacitor charges which makes it charge up to 2VP.
Cont...
During the second positive half-cycle: Diode D3 is forward biased and diodes D1
and D2 are reverse biased. Diode D1 is reverse bias because charged C1 makes the
opposite polarities there and make D1 not to conduct hence the C3 is getting 2VP
from the C2 hence C3 is also charged up to 2VP. Hence C1 and C3 are in series the
voltage across these two series capacitors will be equal to triple of the input
voltage.

4. Voltage Quadrupler https://www.studentsheart.com/voltage-doubler-circuit/
As the name suggests, the voltage Quadrupler is the circuit which will produce the output
whose multiplication factor will be 4 times of input voltage. By adding another diode and
capacitor section into the voltage Tripler circuits it will become voltage Quadrupler circuit.
The Following is Working of Voltage Quadrupler:
During the positive half-cycle: D1 is Forward Bias and D2, D3 and D4 are reverse biased, C1
charges due to D1 and store charges up to VP.
During the Negative half-cycle: D2 is Forward Bias and D1, D3 and D4 are reverse biased, C2
charges due to D2 and it will store charges up to 2Vp (VP of C1 and Vp of Supplied Voltage).

During the second positive half-cycle: D3 is forward Bias and D1, D2 and D4 are reverse
Biased. D1 is reverse biased due to opposite polarity capacitor there. And hence C3 will be
charged up to 2Vp (due to discharging of C2).
During the second Negative half-cycle: D4 isforward bias and D1, D2 and D3 are reverse
biased. D4 will make C4 charges up to 2Vp. So the total output voltage is the sum of all
voltages. Therefore, D2 and D4 are forward bias it means C2+C4= 2Vp+2Vp=4Vp.
