The Commonwealth is a group of 56 countries that used to be part of
the British Empire. It has two main parts: the Commonwealth
Secretariat, which deals with government matters, and the
Commonwealth Foundation, which focuses on relationships between

member countries that aren't run by governments. There are also


many other groups and organizations connected to the
Commonwealth.
COMMON WEALTH VALUES
1. Democracy: Everyone gets a fair say in decisions. This means having fair elections and respecting
everyone's rights and the law.
2. Human Rights: Treating everyone with dignity and fairness, no matter their race, gender, religion, or other
differences.
3. Rule of Law: Making sure laws are applied fairly to everyone, and there's accountability when they're not
followed.
4. Good Governance: Governments should be open, honest, and work efficiently to help all people in their
countries.
5. Sustainable Development: Making sure our world grows economically, socially, and environmentally in a
way that's good for both now and the future.
6. Peace and Security: Working together to solve conflicts peacefully and keeping everyone safe and stable.
7. Tolerance and Respect: Accepting and understanding different cultures and beliefs, and treating
everyone with kindness and respect.
8. Gender Equality: Making sure men and women have the same chances in life, including in education, jobs,
and making important decisions.

These values are what Commonwealth countries believe in and strive to achieve together to make the world
ESSAY WRITING COMPETITION
This is a essay writing competition in which the
candidates will be writing essayes on the given
topics from their respective categories in which
they fall in according to age : Junior and Senior
TOPICS
Senior category: 14-18 years / Word limit-1500
- "It's worth remembering that it is often the small steps, not the giant leaps, that bring about the
most lasting change." - Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. What small steps can you take to help
tackle the climate crisis? EG- reduce,reuse recycle

- Write a speech highlighting what you think is the most challenging issue facing the world today,
and how Commonwealth values can be used to solve it. EG-sustainable projects

- At the heart of Samoan way of life is 'aiga', meaning 'family' values including selflessness,
hospitality, co-operation, respect and dignity. What core values and ideas from your culture can be
used to enhance cooperation and community in the Commonwealth? EG- sankofa (ghanian
tradition)

- The Commonwealth's London Declaration aimed to strive for peace, liberty and progress. Write a
letter to your President or Prime Minister about how to achieve those aims.EG- solutions that
benefits everyone
Junior category: under 14 years / Word limit-750

- What new habit could you adopt to positively contribute towards a greener
Commonwealth?
- Write a dialogue between yourself and a grandparent about resilience and
hope. What can you share with the older generation, and what can you learn
from them?
- You are taking part in a beach clean-up and discover that you can speak to
sea creatures.
What are they saying, and how do you respond?
- You're on a school exchange in a
Commonwealth country different to your own.
How do you make friends with people your age? (Consider similarities and
differences in culture that may unite you).
RULES AND REGULATIONS
- Choose any one topic from the category in which you fall according to your age.
- Plagiarism is not accepted in the competition.
- Essay needs to be written in Word Document file.
- Mention page no. on every page.
- Mention the title on the top and total word count at the last page.
- There is no minimum word count. Exceeding the word count will result in
automatic disqualification.
- Rename the file with your full name and then share the PDF with your
respective English Teacher.
- The PDF file should not exceed 10mbs.
Note: The document should not include your name, age, school
etc inside it.
