Mainframes, how they work and what they do - M80 (youtube.com)

1. what is a mainframe

- Powerful and large-scale computing system designed for high performance. Serve also as
backbone for many applications that seems critical

2. what are they used for

- High reliability over a high large-scale of computing tasks with also security and processing
power.

3. what is the user intface today and how was it before?

- Today, mainframes typically use modern graphical user interfaces (GUIs) and web-based
interfaces for interaction. Previously, they used text-based terminals or console interfaces

4. what are terminals?

- Devices that used to interact with the mainframe.

5. how programmers interact wit the mainframe with the example of IBM's MVS 3.8

- Specialized interfaces and programming languages that designed for main frame
components.

6. What mainframes cannot be used for.

- Generally not used for tasks that requires real time processing and real time graphics
II. Describe the following OS

IBM z/OS – Operating System that has IBM zSystems mainframes. Suitable for
continuous high performance volume operation

IBM z/VM – Operating System that has security rich and scalable hypervisor

IBM z/VSE: z/VSE – Operating System that designed for smaller IBM mainframes and
also provides environment for running batch and online processing applications.

IBM zLinux: refers to Linux operating systems running on IBM mainframes. It allows
mainframes to run Linux distributions alongside other mainframe operating systems,
leveraging the security, reliability, and scalability of the mainframe hardware
