1.0 Executive Summary

My business is an unincorporated business with a single owner who generated

revenue from the operation. I don't name my business since it is not necessary to
create a separate business or trade name, many sole proprietors conduct business
under their own names. I do a retail business that offers clients a little quantities of
things including instant noodles, and junk food both in-person and online. Examples
of retail include mineral waters, mee sedap, and samyang. I offered the service
especially for the college students in UiTM Lendu. The demand for my products is
high, especially the Samyang noodles. Its especially apparent because someone is
always craving during semester.

3.0 Project Description

It’s a retail business selling instant noodles, junkfood and mineral water to other
college students studying in UiTM Lendu, Melaka. It is sole proprietorship and I own
the profit and liabilities completely.

The reason I choose this business is because of the high demand in the last
semester. Female students often time are shy or just lazy to climb up and down the
college to buy instant noodles or mineral water. Averagely, every week, there will be
request for Samyang instant ramen in the group chat and the supply is not enough to
fulfill the demand. Since I stayed in dorm room, my customers can just walk up or
down to my room. Its closer and they don’t have to change clothes or get ready to go
out.

The target customer for this little retail business is the students of UiTM Lendu,
Melaka. Especially for the female students. My supplier is from Shoppee e-shops. It is
significantly cheaper to buy products in bulks. That is why I can sell it for cheaper
compared to the price in UiTM Lendu’s marts.

I started the business right after Eid Mubarak’s holiday around 1st May 2023.
However I order my supplies during Ramadhan and it reached my home 3 days before
Eid Mubarak. I did the business in my room and promotes it at Whatsapp. I would
send my shop promotions to every group in UiTM that I am in to increase my
customer base.

I exclusively do business online, so I keep my merchandise in my dorm room.

Basically, I didn't have any expenses outside the price and delivery of the product.
Every product has a distinct price since it relies on how much inventory is purchased;
the more inventory purchased, the less expensive the price.

6.0 Experiential Learning

The experince I gained when I carry out this small retail business is very eye-
opening. I realised that the world is big, people have different personality and I lived
like a frog under the shell.

1. Impatient customers

- There are many situation where I replied late because of doing homework and
assignment and its not good to the customer. They will spam and my chatbox waiting
for my replies. However I will still reply calmly because I cannot be rude to
customers. Here, I learn patience.

- Because I’m doing the delivery for free, I walked everywhere to reduce the cost of
shuttle. Sometimes the customers will get impatient if I’m late. However they will
calm down when they know that I walked to their college to deliver. I learn to tell my
customers in advance the situation and inform them if I’m ever going to be late again.

2. “Forgot to pay” customers.

- I did self-service business outside my room. What I mean is that, I will put my
products on my shoerack outside my door and a container for money. I always did
inventory at the end of the day, and I notice that some products are sold but the money
is not enough.

3. Rising price of the product

- Before pandemic, the price of a pack of Samyang in Shopee is around RM19 -

RM22. Now, in every shop in Shopee the cost is RM22 not including delivery cost.
Before, I can sell 1 packet of Samyang for RM5, but I have to increase the cost to RM
6.

As I’m doing online business, I need to consistently post to Whatsapp Status and
Groupchat about my products. I cannot be shy but I also cannot post too many in a
day or people will skip and not read it because its too long.

7.0 Conclusion

In my opinion, I can honestly state that running a business while I'm studying has
been such an amazing journey for me because it has given me so many unforgettable
memories. I learned a lot about managing a business, human in genereal and patience
from it. Additionally, it helps me realise that every effort will eventually pay off, and
it is worth the efforts. In addition, learning about business is one of the most crucial
and vital things I've ever done in my life. I learn how to attract people's attention to
convey not just my ideas but also my products to them. Its such a rush and I think I
will repeat it again as a side income, then maybe move to bigger goals.
