SIX THINKING HAT TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE
CANTEEN

A thinking hat is a metaphor for a certain way of thinking. By mentally

wearing different thinking hats people are forced to look at a problem
from different perspectives.

The six types of “Thinking Hats” are:

1. White Hat:- consider only information that is available, what are the
facts? White hat makes you focus on the data. Analyze the available data and trends.
This represents a very rational approach.
i. The Facts-
-How many complaints are the services
-Can it be done quicker?
- What is the cost of possible solutions?

2. Red Hat:- The Red Hat signifies feelings, hunches and intuition. When using this
hat you can express emotions and feelings and share fears, likes, dislikes, loves, and
hates.

-What things could go wrong?

- What does my gut tell me about why this won’t work?
-Why don’t I like this idea?

3. Black Hat:- logic applied to identification of mistakes or barriers, looking for a

mismatch. The black hat is the hat of caution. This also includes critical evaluations.

- Will this go wrong in practice?

-What are some weaknesses of this option?
-Is the reason I have for not liking this idea a valid one?

4. Yellow Hat:- The yellow hat is the hat of positivity . Try seeing the benefits of
this decision and what opportunities it opens

-What are the ways in which this idea can improve our services.
-If we choose this, what could go right in the future?
-What are the reasons why we should implement this idea

5. Green Hat:- The Green Hat focuses on creativity; the possibilities,

alternatives, and new ideas. It’s an opportunity to express new concepts and new
perceptions
- What are we missing?
- What are other canteen doing and how can we do it better/different?
- Can we fundamentally change the way servies?

6. Blue Hat:- The Blue Hat is used to manage the thinking process. It’s the
control mechanism that ensures the Six Thinking Hats® guidelines are observed.

- The problem is that there are complain.

- customer dissatisfaction is not good for canteen.
- We are trying to improve customer satisfaction .
