Lesson Plan

Title: Light

Objective:
1. Describe refraction of light at the boundary between air and glass or air and water in terms of
change of speed.

Activity 1: Refraction of light through different medium

Open this link address to proceed on the task:
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulations/bending-light
* Pick More Tools for the task.
1. Students will work individually to complete the following task.
2. Set the medium to air and observe the speed of light.
3. Change the second medium to glass and observe how the speed of light changes.
4. Repeat the experiment by changing the second medium to water.
6. Record observations about the angles of incidence and refraction and the change in the speed of
light.
7. Use the tools provided in the simulator to measure the speed.
8. Take screenshots (2) for each of the medium measured and transfer the SS image into a google doc.
9. Name the google doc as Task Title (Your Name). Example: Refraction of light through different
medium (Joewinster).

Question Task (Need to be Answered)

Part 1: Observing Refraction
Setup: Air to Glass

 Set the first medium to air and the second medium to glass.
 Observe the light ray as it passes from air into glass.
 Measure and record the angle of incidence (θ1) and the angle of refraction (θ2).
Questions:
What is the angle of incidence (θ1)? _______________________
What is the angle of refraction (θ2)? _______________________
Describe the change in the speed of light as it enters the glass from the air. ___________________

Setup: Air to Water

 Set the first medium to air and the second medium to water.
 Observe the light ray as it passes from air into water.
 Measure and record the angle of incidence (θ1) and the angle of refraction (θ2).
Questions:
What is the angle of incidence (θ1)? _______________________
What is the angle of refraction (θ2)? _______________________
Describe the change in the speed of light as it enters the water from the air. ___________________

Part 2: Analysing Refraction

 Compare the angles of refraction in glass and water for the same angle of incidence.
Questions:
1. Which medium (glass or water) causes the light to bend more sharply?

2. Explain why there is a difference in the angles of refraction between glass and water.

Speed of Light:
Based on your observations, discuss how the speed of light changes when it moves from air into a
denser medium (glass or water).
Questions:
1. How does the speed of light in air compare to the speed of light in glass?

2. How does the speed of light in air compare to the speed of light in water?

Part 3: Applying Concepts

Real-World Applications:

 Think about real-world applications of refraction.

1. Give one example of application of refraction in your daily life (You think that it is useful for you)
