OPEN BOOK, 16:00-18:00, December 30th,2021

Student Name:
YOU HAVE TWO HOURS TO COMPLETE THIS EXAM AND 10 MINUTESS TO SCAN AND
SUBMIT TO lwylyfzxl@163.com. Identical papers are invalid, scores are zero.
Give all answers in SI units (kg, m, s). All numerical answers MUST have the proper units attached.
Problem: 1.(15%) Short-answer Questions
(1) Compare Eulerian Description of fluid motion and Lagrangian Description.
(2) Compare Bernoulli’s equation and energy equation of steady uniform flow.
(3) Write the expression of Navier–Stokes equations in vector form and explain its physical
significance
Problem: 2.(15%) Find the force P required to hold the gate in the position shown in Fig 1.
The gate is 5m wide.

Problem: 3.(15%) Air at 120 kPa absolute and 30°C flows vertically upward in a pipe, as
shown in Fig. 2. If the water manometer deflection H= 5 cm, determine the velocity in the
smaller pipe. Assume the air to be incompressible.

Problem: 4.(15%)Determine the rate of kinetic energy loss due to the cylinder shown in Fig. 3. in
watts, Assume a plane flow with =1.23 kg/m3 and make the calculation per meter of cylinder
length.
Problem: 5.(15%)Find the flow rate from the pipe shown in Fig 4.
Problem: 6.(15%) A velocity field is proposed to be:
u  y  z, v  z  x, w  x  y
(a) Is this a possible incompressible flow? (b) If so, find the pressure gradientp, assuming a
frictionless air flow with the z-axis vertical. Using ρa =1 kg/m3
Problem: 7.(10%) A velocity field is given by u= 30 (y - 96y2) m/s, v= 0, and w=0. Display the
stress components at y=2.5mm using =510-4kg-s/m2 and p=210kPa. Find the ratio xy/xx.
