following slides.

The most famous landmark in San Francisco is the Golden Gate Bridge. It was completed in
1937. This majestic bridge spans the channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. At
the time of its completion, the bridge was both the longest and the tallest suspension bridge in the
world, with a main span of 4,200 feet and a total height of 746 feet. To experience the Golden Gate
Bridge, visitors can bike across the bridge and take the ferry back to the city, or they look at it from
viewpoints at the Fort Point National Historic Site.

The city is also home to other historic sites, such as Alcatraz Island. Alcatraz is located in the
San Francisco Bay, about 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco. The site was used as a fort, a
military prison, and a maximum-security federal penitentiary that was home to famous criminals,
like Al Capone. Many who believe in the supernatural, believe that Alcatraz is haunted by some of
the criminals who died there.

Visit the Dragon’s Gate

In 1970, Chinese-American architect Clayton Lee designed Chinatown’s famous gate, which sits at
the southern end of Chinatown along Grant Avenue in San Francisco. It’s a great place to start
exploring the neighborhood too. With its stone pillars, green-tiled pagodas, and dragon sculptures,
this is the only authentic Chinatown gate in the United States. The Dragon’s Gate entrance to
Chinatown is guarded by a trio of stone lion statues. Each entryway of the gate has a sign hanging
over it written in Chinese. The center one reads: “All under heaven is for the good of the people”;
the right and left signs read “respect; love” and “trust; peace.”

Visit the Red Blossom Tea Company

This family-owned teahouse serves rare teas from China and Taiwan. Each year, the owners take a
sourcing trip through the Chinese provinces, collecting new varieties of black, white, herbal,
flowering, and rare teas, such as an aged orchid from the Guangdong Province.

In Chinatown, you will often see locals sitting on benches and eating dumplings from steaming
containers. It’s likely they got the dumplings from the Good Mong Kok, a tiny bakery found in San
Francisco's Chinatown. There’s no indoor seating at the bakery, you grab your food and go. You will
find delicious flavors and dishes like the “shrimp har gow”, “pork shumai”, and large barbecue pork
buns. For dessert, try the custard-filled pineapple bun.

Shop at The Wok Shop

The Wok Shop has been in business for nearly 50 years, stocking Chinese cookware for
professionals and home cooks alike. Owner Tane Chan started out stocking a selection of woks in
1972. She has expanded over the years and now offers utensils, cleavers, hot pots, rice cookers,
sake sets, steamer baskets, and much, much more. Still, the gleaming stacks of woks remain the
main attraction. Stop by on Wednesday night for Wok Wednesdays, a weekly cooking class for
those looking to make good use of their purchases.
