Basic introduction of
Arrayforce™ gas-liquid separation membrane contactor
Process water in many industries requires dissolved gases removal or gases injection.

Arrayforce™ gas-liquid membrane contactor provides a highly efficient, energy-saving and environmental friendly gas-liquid

separation/mix solution for various industries by utilizing hollow fiber membrane with excellent hydrophobic property.

Liquid

In typical operation, liquid to be degassed flows outside the hollow

fiber. At the same time, vacuum, sweep gas or a certain adsorption Typical Applications
liquid go through inside the hollow fiber.
· Deoxygenation for ultrapure water
There are a lot of micro pores on the surface of hydrophobic hollow

fiber, which allow gas molecules pass through, but reject water · Decarbonation for ultrapure water
molecules. Under the force caused by vacuum, sweep gas or
· Deammonia for wastewater
adsorption liquid, the gases dissolved in liquid outside the hollow

fiber moves continuously through the micropores to the inside · Carbon dioxide injection into pure water
hollow fiber, and then is taken away by vacuum, sweep gas or a · Oxygen injection into pure water
certain adsorption liquid. In this way, dissolved gases in liquid is

removed.
Features of Arrayforce™ membrane contactor
· Excellent hydrophobic property
The gas-liquid separation function of the membrane contactor is guaranteed based
on its hydrophobic property, but after long-time operation in water, the pores of the
hollow fiber will be gradually infiltrated by liquid. The hydrophobic interface will be
destroyed, and the membrane will lose gas-liquid separation function.
Arrayforce’s special membrane hydrophobization technology ensures the hydropho-
bic life of membrane long enough for engineering application !

· Precise hollow fiber arrangement

The unique hollow fiber knitting process makes hollow fibers into an array, then the
hollow fiber array is rolled up into a housing. The hollow fiber knitting process
expands the effective contact area of the membrane contactor. Besides, each hollow
fiber is fixed, so they will not swing while the water flows through them. In this way,
the hollow fiber will not broke and product water quality can be stable;

· High efficient gas-liquid contact

The middle baffle and the central pipe water distribution, make water jet flow
through the hollow fibers, which effectively improves the gas transfer efficiency
between the shell side and the lumen side.

Application
The industries served by Arrayforce™ membrane contactors:

1. Microelectronic semiconductor
In the semiconductor and flat panel industries, ultra-pure water for process requires very low levels of
dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide. Arrayforce™ membrane contactors precisely control the dissolved
oxygen level in water and protect the quality of the chip and panel. In addition, the removal of carbon
dioxide in water can improve the ion removal efficiency of EDI and ion exchange equipment!
Membrane contactor is well known to many users in this industry and it is a standard method in
ultrapure water process.

2. High-molecular polymer
In the industries of Engineering Plastic and Fluorine Chemical, deoxygenated water is needed for many
polymerization reaction, because
1) Oxygen will drive some polymerization reaction too fast which may cause explosion. So the oxygen in
water is a potential safety hazard to the process equipment ;
2) Oxygen will slow down some polymerization reaction, and influence the following productivity and
product quality.

3. Food and Beverage

In the production of certain beverages, precise control of the oxygen, carbon dioxide and nitrogen
content in liquid material is necessary. Based on Arrayforce™ membrane contactors, system manufac-
turers can provide efficient, accurate, and compact dissolved gas control solutions, including: removal
of dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide from liquid materials, injection of oxygen, carbon dioxide, and
nitrogen into liquid materials.

4. Boiler makeup water

Oxygen removal is a key part in the boiler makeup water treatment process. Oxygen is the main
corrosive substance in boiler makeup water system. Dissolved oxygen in feed water system should be
quickly removed, otherwise it will corrode the boiler's water supply system and components.
Compared with traditional thermal deaeration process, the energy saved by membrane contactor
deoxygenation system can recover the increased investment cost in one to two years !
In addition, dissolved carbon dioxide in water also increases the load of the EDI/ion exchange equipment,
reducing ion removal efficiency, which can also be solved by Arrayforce™ membrane contactor.

5. Oilfield reinjection water

In the later stage of oilfield exploitation, water reinjection into oil well is necessary to press out the oil.
The sourcewater for reinjection water includes surface water and groundwater. Dissolved oxygen
content of surface water is about 8-10mg/L. Groundwater contains less oxygen, but in the process of
collection and transportation, and adding oxygen to remove iron, the oxygen content is usually
increased to 1-2mg/L when delivered to the point of use.
The main hazards of dissolved oxygen in water are:
1) Corrode water injection pipe;
2) Breed bacteria and oxides, block oil layer;
3) Oxidize colloids in crude oil, decrease interspace of oil layer and oil recovery.
The traditional vacuum deoxygenation tower consumes a large amount of steel, and oxygen removal
efficiency is far below the requirement. Another chemical deoxygenation process is needed after the
vacuum tower, which will increase operation cost and introduce unwanted salt into the water.
In addition, in the boiler system of heavy oil thermal recovery process, the makeup water also needs
Arrayforce™ membrane contactor to remove dissolved oxygen from boiler make up water.
6. Pharmaceutical
Pharmaceutical processes typically require ultra-pure water with very low conductivity. The typical
water production process is RO (single or double stage) + EDI. Carbon dioxide should be removed
before entering EDI, to reduce the ion load, and improve operating efficiency, shorten cleaning period.
Traditional methods:
1) Adding alkali to transform carbon dioxide to salt, then remove salt by 2ndstage reverse osmosis.
This process requires additional chemical cost, and the concentrated water produced by the 2nd
reverse osmosis reduces the recovery of the final pure water.
2) Strip tower
The high air-water ratio calls for high energy consumption, and the need of air purification also
increases the equipment invest.

7. Experimental analysis
The dissolved gas in liquid changes the composition of the material to be tested and can interfere
with the measurement results of the analytical instrument. At this point, the Arrayforce™ membrane
contactor is required to remove dissolved gases in the liquid material.

Compared with conventional degassers, Arrayforce™ membrane contactors

have the following advantages:
· Expandable: no matter treatment capacity increase or gas removal efficiency improvement, you can make it
through adding membrane contactors in parallel of series;
· No chemical dosing: no chemical elements increase in water, saving cost of subsequent treatment;
· Quick start: simple operation process, time required for system stability is very short.

8. Environmental protection
Ammonia nitrogen in many industrial wastewater is a serious challenge for discharge or reuse.
Traditional deammonia technologies for wastewater still have various limitations: difficult to meet
current environmental requirements, or treatment cost is too high.
In suitable applications (please consult Cobetter staff for suitable conditions), Arrayforce™ membrane
contactorc an remove ammonia nitrogen in wastewater effectively at a low cost, to meet discharge
requirements, or recycle the ammonia as chemical resources.
