Case N-312
Use of Stud Welds to Anchor Section III,
Division 1, Class MC Vessels to Section III,
Division 2, Class CC Concrete Containment
Structures
Section III, Division 2
Inquiry: May stud welds, and studs as described
below, be used to provide the means of anchoring the
containment shell constructed to the rules of Section III,
Division 1, Subsection NE to the concrete containment
structure constructed to the rules of Section III, Division
2, Subsection CC?
Reply: It is the opinion of the Committee that stud
welds, and studs as described below, may be used to
anchor the containment shell constructed to Section III,
Division 1, Subsection NE to the concrete containment
structure constructed to Section III, Division 2, Subsec-
tion CC, provided that:
(1) studs shall not exceed 7⁄8 in. in diameter when
welding in the flat position and 3⁄4 in. in diameter for
all other welding positions;
(2) stud material shall meet the requirements of
CC-2620;
(3) the welding procedure and the welding opera-
tors shall be qualified in accordance with the require-
ments of CC-4533 and NE-4311.1;
(4) the surface shall be prepared in accordance
with the requirements of NE-4412;
(5) production weld testing shall be performed in
accordance with the requirements of CC-4534;
(6) examination of the stud welds shall be in
accordance with CC-5524;
(7) PWHT shall be performed in accordance with
the requirements of NE-4620 for the containment shell
material;
(8) loads transmitted to the containment vessel
shell through the studs shall be included in the design
and analysis of the shell in accordance with Subsec-
tion NE;
(9) this Case number and revision shall be shown
on the applicable Data Report Form.
