SYLLABUS for ENGL 302

Course Title TEACHING ENGLISH IN THE ELEMENTARY GRADES THROUGH LITERATURE


This course will focus on Children’s Literature in English to include riddles, poetry, stories,
drama, and other written works as an avenue to teach English language. It also allows the
Course Description students to explore the connection between English and literature. Its various uses and
application in learning English as well as how it influences and connects with culture and
society. Teaching methodologies in the use of literature shall be emphasized.
Course Credits 3 units
Prerequisite NONE
Course Outcomes At the end of the semester, this course will enable the students to:
C01. Recognize the general view of children’s literature
C02. Identify the best books for children’s literature
C03. Classify children’s literature according to types and subtypes.
C04. Develop skills in terms of writing, speaking and listening.
C05. Recognize the two kinds of writing based on literature as subject matter.
C06. Identify and discuss the types of poetry.
C07. Appreciate poetry as a literary art form
CO8. Discuss the involvement of Poetry in teaching English
CO9. Develop deeper appreciation of cultural diversity by introducing them to poetry.
CO10. Enable students to develop their writing, creativity and critical thinking skills.
CO11. Students develop an awareness and learn to appreciate poetry and how it works.
CO12. Identify and analyze the various impacts of different genres of literature in language
teaching.
CO13. Identify a variety of genres of poetry, short stories, drama and novel to language of
literature.
