Hardware Standards
1. OVERVIEW
To maintain the quality of the finished product, we are requiring hardware to meet a standard. This is not a
new expectation but a formal restating of our current agreement. Please reference the International Standards
(ISO) that apply to the hardware in question as well as the minimum class/grade specified on the torque spec
page.

2. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
ISO 8992 (Fasteners-General Requirements): This International Standard specifies the general requirements
for standardized fasteners. It is intended to be used with reference to the related International Standards.

3. SPECIAL ATTENTION WITHIN ISO 8992

1. ISO 898-1 (Mechanical properties of fasteners made of carbon steel and alloy steel): This standard specifies
properties such as yield strength and hardness.
2. ISO 4759-1 (Tolerances for fasteners): This standard specifies all dimensions and geometric features of bolts,
screws, studs, and nuts.
3. ISO 898-7 (Torsional test and minimum torques): This standard specifies a torsional test for the
determination of the breaking torque of bolts and screws with nominal diameters 1mm to 10mm with property
classes 8.8 to 12.9.

NYLON PATCH REQUIREMENTS ON SCREWS
NYLOK® Blue Patch, TufLok®, TORQ-PATCH®, or other ICON approved Nylon patch to be used on customer assembled
machine screws unless otherwise specified by ICON. Nylon patch is a reliable system for thread locking fastened joints, applied
at a specific portion of the thread.

The Nylon patched fasteners must meet the torque performance requirements as defined in WN900.1, see table.

Patch Dimensions
 D Thread diameter
 A Patch coverage angle A in the core area ~90°
 B Edge zone angle (spray transition) up to ~180°
 L1 Patch Length 4 to 6 threads
 L2 End threads without patch, 1 to 3 threads with no patch to enable easy installation

Torque Performance Test (WN 900.1)

1) Before testing make sure the screw and nut threads are within specified tolerances.
2) Using a digital torque wrench or digital torque adapter, measure the First On: Maximum Driving Torque required to
turn the screw into the test nut (maximum 10 rpm’s) until the patch is positioned within the nut thread. The measured
value must meet or exceed the values in the table, Column 1, First on: Maximum Driving Torque for the given screw
size.
3) Using a digital torque wrench or digital torque adapter, back off the screw by 90° and then without stopping, measure
the First Off: Minimum Removal Torque, which is the smallest torque during the following 360° rotation. The
measured value must meet or exceed the values in the table, Column 2, First Off: Minimum Removal Torque for the
given screw size.
4) Unthread the screw fully, and then drive the screw back in again – repeat four more times for a total of five. When
unthreading the screw the fifth time, measure the Fifth Off: Minimum Removal Torque during the first 360° rotation.
The measured value must meet or exceed the values in the table, Column 3, Fifth Off: Minimum Removal Torque for
the given screw size.

LIQUID THREADLOCKER REQUIREMENTS ON SCREWS
Loctite® Threadlocker Blue 242® or other ICON approved liquid threadlocker to be used on factory assembled machine screws
where Nylock Nuts are not able to be used. This threadlocker is to be serviceable, designed for the locking of threaded fasteners
which require normal disassembly with standard hand tools. The product cures when confined in the absence of air between
close fitting metal surfaces.

Not to be used on plastic parts, particularly thermoplastic materials where stress cracking of the plastic could result.

Cured Performance Properties

After 24 hours @ 72°C (22°C):

Breakaway Torque (ISO 10964):

3/8 X 16 steel nuts (grade 2) and bolts (grade 5) 70 to 150 lb-in (7.9 to 17 N.m)
3/8 x 16 cadmium nuts and bolts 10 to 60 lb-in (1.1 to 6.8 N.m)
3/8 x 16 zinc nuts and bolts 20 to 60 lb-in (2.3 to 6.8 N.m)
M10 black oxide steel nuts and bolts 71 to 168 lb-in (8.0 to 19.0 N.m)

Prevail Torque (ISO 10964):

3/8 x 16 steel nuts (grade 2) and bolts (grade 5) 25 to 60 lb-in (2.8 to 6.8 N.m)
3/8 x 16 cadmium nuts and bolts 4 to 40 lb-in (0.5 to 4.5 N.m)
3/8 x 16 zinc nuts and bolts 10 to 40 lb-in (1.1 to 4.5 N.m)

Tested to the requirements of: ASTM D 5363
