Question 1. Roller Contact Bearing (20%)

The worm shaft shown in part a of the figure
transmits 1.2 hp at 500 rev/min. A static force
analysis gave the results shown in part b of the
figure. Bearing A is to be an angular-contact
ball bearing mounted to take the 555-lbf
thrust load. The bearing at B is to take only the
radial load, so a straight (cylindrical) roller
bearing will be employed. Use an application
factor of 1.2, a desired life of 30 kh, and a
reliability goal, combined, of 0.99. Specify
bearing B (use Table 11-3). Figure 1. Roller Contact Bearing. Forces in pounds.

Question 2. Non-permanent Joint / Bolt (30%)

Figure 2 shows a bolted lap joint that uses SAE grade 5
bolts. The members are made of cold-drawn AISI 1020
steel. Find the safe load F that can be applied to this
connection to provide a minimum factor of safety of 2
for the following failure modes:
a) shear of bolts (7%)
b) bearing on bolts (7%)
c) bearing on members (7%)
d) tension of members (7%)
Figure 2. Bolt Connection e) Which failure mode control the design?(2%)

Question 3. Permanent Joint / Weld (25%)
If the connection for the same problem (Question 2) is
changed to a welding connection with E6010 as an electrode,
find the safe load F that can be applied to this connection to
provide a minimum factor of safety of 2 for the following
failure modes:
a) shear of weld (7%)
b) tension of members (7%)
c) attachment strength (9%)
d) Which failure mode control the design? (2%)

Question 4. Mechanical Spring (25%)

The extension spring shown in the figure 4 has full-twisted loop ends. The material is music wire
A228. The spring has 88 coils and is close-wound with a preload of 20 lbf.
a) Find the closed length of the spring (3.75%).
b) Find the torsional stress in the spring corresponding to the preload (3.75%).
c) Estimate the spring rate (3.75%).
d) What load would cause permanent deformation? (10%)
e) What is the spring deflection corresponding to the load found in part d? (3.75%)
