M.E.

A ENGINEERING COLLEGE, PERINTHALMANNA

III SEMESTER B.TECH SECOND SERIES EXAMINATION OCTOBER 2016
ME201 MECHANICS OF SOLIDS

Class: ME1
Time: 1 Hours Maximum Mark: 20

PART A
(Answer All Questions, 5 x 2 = 10 Marks)

1. Define tensional rigidity?

2. What you mean by Poisson’s ratio?
3. Define polar modulus?
4. What are the assumptions used in the theory of torsion?
5. Find the maximum torque that can be applied safely to a shaft of 25cm diameter. The
permissible angle of twist is 2.1 degree in a length of 7.5cm. Take G= 80kN/mm2?

PART B
(Answer Any One Questions, 1x 10 = 10 Marks)

6. Determine the diameter of a solid steel shaft to transmit 25kW at 300rpm. The maximum stress that
can be applied to the shaft is 47.5N/mm2 and the angle of twist should not exceed unit degree in
unit length?
7. A shaft of 4cm in diameter and 4m long is rigidly fixed at its ends. A torque of 16200Nm is applied
at a point 1m from the left support. Calculate the fixing couples at the supports and maximum
tensional stress induced in the shaft. Calculate also the angle of twist at the point where the torque
is applied. Given G= 84Gpa.
