DI Spreadsheet_Template _v 2023.08.17
23 May 2018
This spreadsheet is sensitive to certain input parameters and ranges. For the spreadsheet to yield useful
test data, the user should enter the required data correctly. The laboratory testing procedure should be
carried out in accordance with the "Durability Index Testing Procedure Manual" which can be downloaded
from http://www.comsiru.uct.ac.za/component/k2/item/91-downloads.html. The test procedures can also be
obtained from the South African Standards - SANS 3001-C03-1,SANS 3001-C03-2 and SANS 3001-C03-3.
1. Information known to the user about the test samples should be entered into the 'Specimen
information' worksheet.
If readings are recorded using the Observer II system, data should be exported from the
Observer II application. The user should first import the data into Observer II and then select
the portion of data to be exported. This can be done by clicking on 'Data' and then clicking on
'Export'. The time frame for the test should then be selected. Click 'Ok' to export the data. The
data will then appear as a .csv file in c:\ by default. This file can then be opened and the data
can be copied into this DI spreadsheet.
Note: It is not necessay to open the Event file as all readings are exported in the Pen
file.
3. The time intervals for the spreadsheet should be entered in one of the following time formats:
hh:mm:ss AM
hh:mm:ss PM
hh:mm:ss
hh:mm
Data should therefore be recorded in one of the above time formats to avoid a cumbersome
conversion process. One can either use the 24- or 12- hour time format. If using the 12-hour
time format, AM or PM should be entered in after the time. The date should be omitted as
there is a date cell in the spreadsheet.
4. Once the readings have been successfully entered, the OPI for each sample is calculated in
the worksheets: 'Sample1Calcs' --> 'Sample4Calcs'. The average OPI value is calculated in
the worksheet 'Mean OPI calcs'. The average is based on at least three test determinations.
The calculation worksheets require no additional input and should not be altered by
the user. Computations are performed automatically on input of data.
Note: The spreadsheets allow for data from four individual specimens to be entered.
However, average values for three specimens can also be determined. If for a given test only
two specimens are used, the average should be calculated manually.
5. The outputs for the OPI test are generated in two worksheets. The 'OPI output summary'
worksheet creates a summary output for the test which includes the individual OPI and k
values for each of the samples as well as the average OPI value for the test. Various other
data entered by the user will also be reflected here. The user should enter any comments and
specimen descriptions into the 'Additional sample info' sheet. Output graphs for each of the
samples are generated in the worksheet 'OPI output graphs'.
6. The OPI test should be performed with pressures not exceeding 105 kPa. The spreadsheet
will return a result of "Invalid" if any pressures above 105 kPa are entered.
7. If two or more samples are Invalid, the spreadsheet will return "Invalid Test" for the entire
test. The OPI values for the other samples will be calculated, but the test should be
disregarded.
9. Sorptivity test data should be entered into the worksheet named 'Input data from sorptivity
test'. These data consist of readings of the mass of samples determined at 3, 5, 7, 9, 12, 16,
20 and 25 minutes.
10. Once the data has been entered, the sorptivity and porosity calculations are performed in the
sheet 'Sorptivity calcs' and 'Mean sorptivity calcs'. The average is based on at least three test
determinations. The calculation worksheets require no additional input and should not
be altered by the user. Computations are performed automatically on input of data.
11. The outputs for the sorptivity test, including porosity values, are generated in the 'Sorptivity
output summary' and 'Sorptivity output graphs' worksheets.
12. If two or more samples are Invalid, the spreadsheet will return "Invalid Test" for the entire
test.
The sorptivity and porosity values for the other samples will be calculated, but the test should
be disregarded.
The voltage and current measurements are entered into this worksheet, and computations
made to determine the chloride conductivity of a sample. The saturated mass is also
measured to determine porosity of a sample (chloride solution-penetrable porosity).

Comment: Tests are only considered valid if the r2 value is greater than 0.99. Based on engineering
judgement, values indicated as invalid but where r2 is close to 0.99 may be considered.
