METAL/PLASTIC WORKSHOP
 What is a metal workshop?
A Metal Workshop is a space equipped with a large range of equipment for work with sheet
metal, wire and metal tube.
The Metal Workshop houses a large range of manual equipment for the cutting and working of
sheet metal such as a guillotine, English wheels, sheet metal forming press, a range of cutting
dies and tools, plus various benders. In addition, there is a metal bandsaw and drill press.
In the welding bay we have various TIG, MIG and spot welders available for students to use
(after suitable training). To facilitate the best results, there are two nitrided welding tables
available with precision jigging. For finishing work, there is a sandblasting cabinet.
A new hydraulic pipe bender is also available with a 10 ft positioning table. This will allow
precision bending of metal tubing up to 2.5” diam.

Tools/Machines In A Metal Workshop

1. Bead Roller
A Bead Roller is a machine tool that makes rigid lines in sheet metal to make surfaces more
rugged and durable.
Suitable Materials
 Metal
 Mild Steel
 Non-Ferrous Metals
Process
 Forming
 Pressing
 Rolling
 Belt Sander
Belt sanders are versatile power tools widely used for various woodworking, metalworking, and
DIY projects. Belt sanders consist of a motorized mechanism that drives a continuous loop of
sandpaper, known as a sanding belt, over two rollers. As the sanding belt moves rapidly in a
linear motion, it effectively removes material and provides a smooth surface finish.

Suitable Materials
 Wood
 Metal

Process
 Sanding
 Bench/Pedestal Grinder
A bench grinder uses a large spinning wheel of abrasive stone to grind away at metal
components. Bench top grinders can be fitted with a polishing disc and used with medium to
create a polished finish on metals.

Suitable Materials
 Metal
 Metal Pipe
 Metal Tube

Process
 Grinding
 Polishing

 Bench Press
Bench presses can be manual, powered by mechanical advantage, or powered by a hydraulic
system. They are useful for various processes when forming sheet metal such as punching,
shearing, corner rounding, notching, and bending, or pressing components like bearings together.
These are accomplished by utilising various dies sets. This machine is for staff use only.

 Suitable Materials
 Metal
 Mild Steel
 Non-Ferrous Metals
 Process
 Bending
 Forming
 Pressing
 Punching

 Plasma Cutter
The plasma cutter produces a high temperature plasma stream providing effortless cutting of all
electrically conductive materials including steel, cast Iron, stainless steel, copper, aluminium,
brass, etc.
