TITLE OF THE PROJECT-
Impact of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) changes on Pharmaceutical
Industries in India.

OVERVIEW OF THE PROJECT-

Following the implementation of international patent rules on January 1, 2005,
the Indian pharmaceutical industry witnessed a massive transformation. To stay
competitive in the global market, India's indigenous pharmaceutical businesses
have increased their R&D investment significantly.
In the pharmaceutical industry, IPRs are thought to have two main effects.
• The first is the topic of pricing and access, which focuses on the
relationship between intellectual property rights (especially patent rights),
exclusion of rivals, and the availability and pricing of new medications.
• Second, there's the question of R&D incentives, or the function of IPRs in
incentivizing the discovery, development, and marketing of novel
pharmaceuticals, as well as the impact of IPRs on R&D spending and
allocation across illnesses, nations, and organisations.
Obviously, these two challenges are intertwined, and their interaction raises a
slew of complex economic and policy issues.
In this project, I will analyse how the changes in Intellectual Property have
affected the Pharmaceutical Industry in India. The project discusses the status of
Pharmaceutical Industry in India and how has it been growing with new and
improved policy formations. It also deals with the origin of Intellectual Property
Rights, the improvement in Intellectual Property Related laws in India and how
these evolving laws impact the Pharmaceutical Industry. The project also
highlights how Intellectual Property has impacted the availability and access to
medicines and vaccinations in Covid-19 Pandemic.
