Calculation of Percentage elastic recovery of yarn

Problem: A yam specimen of 200 mm extends by 10%

when loaded with 500 cN force. The length of the
specimen after removal of load was found to be 202 mm.
Percentage elastic recovery of yam is ________

Ans: = 90 %

1
Rate of loading and time to break
Problem: If a yarn shows strength of 400 cN when the
time taken to break was 10 seconds. Calculate the
breaking load if the rate of loading was increased to cause
the yarn to break in 1 second.

Ans: = 440 cN

2
Rate of loading and time to break
Problem: If rate of extension of a yarn is doubled, what
will be the % increase in measured yarn strength for same
gauge length? Consider the breaking elongation remains
unchanged.

Ans: 3.01 %

3
Rate of loading and time to break
Problem: A 40 Ne 67/33 polyester/cotton blended yarn
showed a breaking load of 300g when tested on a CRE
tester with 100 mm gauge length and at 100 mm/min
traverse rate. What are the expected percentage change in
the observed tenacity of the yarn if; i) the traverse rate is
increased to 500 mm/min (keeping the gauge length
constant), and ii) the gauge length is increased to 500mm
(keeping the traverse rate constant). [Assume a constant
breaking extension of 25% and single yarn strength CV%
of 10% for all the above conditions]

Ans: (i) 6.99 % ~ 7%

(ii) 11.56 %

a. Pendulum Lever Principle (CRT)
Problem: The following are the tensile test data of a 30 Ne
single yarn while testing on a tensile tester, works on
pendulum lever principle with Standard machine rate of
loading (µo) 440 cN/cm.
Tenacity-11 cN/tex; Breaking extension-7%
Gauge length -20 cm; Traverse rate- 57 mm/min
Calculate the time to break.

Ans: = 19.92 sec ~ 20 sec

h. Constant Tension Winding Tests

Problem: The tenacity of a 29.5 Ne cotton yarn at 4 in

gauge length is 15 g/tex. At what tension, in the constant-
tension winding test, the breakage rate will be 20 breaks
per 1000 yd ? (Assume the standard deviation of the single
yarn strength is always 20 g and at 200 g tension the
breakage rate is 0.5 breaks per 100 yd)

Ans: = 233 g

6
Fibre Bundle Strength
Problem: In a Pressley fibre strength tester the breaking
load of a cotton fibre bundle is 2.5 pound and mass is 2 mg.
What will be the (i) Pressley Index and (ii) Bundle tenacity
(g/tex)?

Ans:

(i) PI = 1.25

(ii) Bundle tenacity (g/tex) = 6.7 g/tex

7
Fibre Bundle Strength
Problem: In a stelometer the breaking loads of a cotton fibre
bundle were found to be 1.25 kg and 0.994 kg with zero and
3 mm gauge lengths, respectively. And the mass of tested
fibre bundles were 2 mg and 2.1 mg respectively. What will
be the bunde strength (i) At zero gauge length and (ii) At 3
mm gauge length?

Ans: (i) 7.5 g/tex

(ii) 7.1 g/tex

8
Yarn Tenacity
Problem: In a tensile tester the mean breaking load of 30 tex
yarn is 500 gf. What will be the tenacity of yarn in g/tex?

Ans: = 16.67 g/tex

9
Fabric Tenacity
Problem: A fabric of areal density 200 g/m2 is tested in a
tensile tester for strip tensile strength with 5 cm wide strip
and 20cm gauge length. The breaking load is found to be
45.5 kgf. What will be the tenacity of fabric in g/tex?

Ans= 4.55 g/tex
