Narrative – Tells a story
Justin Roma’s 2,800 friends have never seen him
cry.
His father has seen him cry only once – the day last
October when doctors told the 16-year-old triathlete
player that what he thought was a bad case of the flu
was actually leukemia.
“He cried a bit then,” Mr. Roma said. “But then he
squared off and said, ‘Well, I’m not dead yet.’ And I
haven’t seen him cry ever since, although he’s told me
that sometimes he cries at night when he’s all alone.”
Narrative
Filipino English language teacher Cresencia Mapalad
and others are hopeful that they could land teaching jobs in
China.
Mapalad told Xinhua in an interview that she got
excited when President Rodrigo Duterte announced that
China has opened its doors to Filipino English language
teachers.
Mapalad, who has a doctorate degree in education,
used to teach English in Samar State University in the central
Philippines for decades. When she retired in 2011 at the age
of 65, she applied as dean of the College of Education in
Metro Manila College (MCM) in Quezon City.
Descriptive – describes a scene/person
Standing at the lunch line, the boy turned to Lucy
Lopez and asked, “Will you be my girlfriend?”
Then he turned to his buddy and started laughing.
Just another cruel joke on the fat kid.
Lucy, who once weighed almost 300 pounds, is used to
them. Since elementary school she has been teased and
taunted about her weight.
“I remember being called horrible names in
elementary school every time we went to the playground,”
the sophomore said.
But life is changing.
Question/Startling
I smelled fishy from the start.
All of a sudden, Attractive Gent was rumored to be the new
paramour of Winsome Personality.
It was surprising because AG was supposed to be involved
with Alluring Beauty, while WP is the apple of Sizzling Maverick’s
eye.
So why the sudden romance rigodon?
Is it a last-ditch effort to save AG and WP’s sinking
partnership?
Well, it kinda worked.
The intriguing scuttlebutt bought the duo a little time. It
wasn’t much, but it was enough to prevent a monumental disaster.

Contrast
Despite climate change, we can still count on
April to bring in the first plitter-platter of rain; a
cycle that ushers in springtime in the west and
prods the blooming of showers, in time for our
Flores de Mayo festivities. But April is not just
about rain showers. It is also about shower of
blessings.

Twist
Auteurs usually tap drama to handle and tell
serious subjects and aspects of life. Logic says the genre
provides the pensive mood audiences must take in
watching or reading it.
For Pinay Beauty (She’s No White) — which seems
to make a reference (or a pun on) to that Disney
character — an official entry to this year’s Pista ng
Pelikulang Pilipino (PPP), Jay Abello uses the power of
comedy to discuss beauty and adds another layer to the
ongoing discourse on race (skin color).

Narrative/Descriptive
As a former beauty queen, Carlene Aguilar is gifted
with a long pair of legs that have walked and conquered glitzy
runways and stages. After all, she is the first Filipina to win
two major crowns in Philippine pageantry, at Miss Earth in
2001 and at Binibining Pilpinas World in 2005.
Over a decade later, Carlene’s legs are now trained to
blaze trails, turn the pedals and hit the waters as a triathlete.
In 2016, she has completed her first-ever triathlon, the
TriUnited 4 held at Clark, Pampanga. From 2017 until present,
she has joined half IronMan races in Cebu, Davao and Subic.

Question/Startling
Why do relationships last? Are the threads
that bind them strong as steel, warm as the sun’s
rays, and soft as that of a silk cocoon?
Whatever the stuff these threads are made
of, you can be sure they exist, for why do people
remain wrapped in relationships for keeps? And
they’re not even married!
