Question # 1
Find the general solution to the following differential equation.
𝑦 ′′ − 5𝑦 ′ + 6𝑦 = 2𝑒
Solution:

Find the general solution to the following differential equation.

We first solve the corresponding homogenous equation.

The characteristic equation associated with this homogenous equation is:

We can factor this equation as:

(m - 2) (m - 3) = 0
So the roots of the characteristics equation are m = 2 and m = 3
Therefore, the complementary solution to the homogenous equation is:

1
Now, we seek a particular solution for the non-homogenous equation. Since the right- hand side
is a good guess for the particular solution is , where A is a constant to be
determined.

Substituting this guess into the non-homogenous equation, we have:

Simplifying the equation, we get:

Comparing the coefficient, we find that A = 1

Therefore, the particular solution is

The general solution to the non-homogenous equation is given by the sum of the complementary
solution and the particular solution:

Where c1 and c2 are constants determined by the initial conditions or boundary conditions
