Focus on Change in Volume of Liquid in a Container

STUDENT OUTCOME
At the end of today’s lesson, students should be able to:
 solve word problems involving change in volume of liquid in a rectangular container

EXAMPLE 1

The figure below shows a 2 m by 40 cm by 1 m rectangular tank containing some water.

The tank was filled to the brim by pouring in 48 identical buckets of water.
What is the capacity of each bucket in litres?

1m 25 cm

40 cm
2m

SOLUTION

2 m = 200 cm 1 m = 100 cm
Height of empty space in container = 100 – 25
= 75
Volume of water poured in = 200 × 40 × 75
= 600 000
Volume of 48 buckets = 600 000
Volume of each bucket = 600 000 ÷ 48
= 12 500
12 500 cm3 = 12 500 mℓ
= 12.5 ℓ

The capacity of each bucket is 12.5 ℓ.

3
A rectangular tank that is 80 cm long and 25 cm wide is -filled with water.
4
1
After some water was removed from the tank to fill up 4 identical pails, the tank became -filled.
2
The volume of each pail is 1 200 cm3.
What is the height of the rectangular tank?
Leave your answer as a decimal.

At the end
Volume of 4 pails = 4 × 1 200

of Volume of tank = 4 800
4
Volume of tank = 4 800 × 4
= 19 200
Base area of tank = 80 × 25
= 2 000
Height of tank = 19 200 ÷ 2 000
= 9.6

The height of the rectangular tank is 9.6 cm.

3 A rectangular tank that is 40 cm long and 25 cm wide was completely filled with water.
After some water was removed from the tank to fill up 3 identical pails, the tank became
1
-filled.
3
The volume of each pail is 3 200 cm3.
What is the height of the rectangular tank?
Leave your answer as a decimal.

1
17 cm and is -filled with water.
5
After 5 pails of water were added to the tank, the tank became completely filled.
The volume of each pail is 1 700 cm3.

EXAMPLE 3

A rectangular tank with a base measuring 56 cm by 35 cm was filled with water to a height of
12 cm as shown in the figure below.
5
After 27.48 ℓ of water was added, the tank became full.
6

a What was the volume of the water in the tank in the end?
b What is the capacity of the tank?

Before After

12 cm
35 cm 35 cm
56 cm 56 cm

SOLUTION

a Volume of water at first = 56 × 35 × 12

= 23 520
27.48 ℓ = 27 480 cm3
Volume of water at the end = 23 520 + 27 480
= 51 000

The volume of water in tank at the end was 51 000 cm3.

b 5 units = 51 000
1 unit = 51 000 ÷ 5
= 10 200
Capacity of tank, 6 units = 10 200 × 6
= 61 200

The capacity of the tank is 61 200 cm3.

EXAMPLE 4

The figure below shows a rectangular tank measuring 30 cm by 12 cm by 40 cm that was filled
with 7.2 ℓ of water at first.
12 identical cups containing 0.3 ℓ of water each were then poured into the tank.

a What was the volume of the water that was poured into the tank?
Express your answer in millilitres.
b What was the final height of the water level in the tank?

40 cm

12 cm
30 cm

SOLUTION

a
Volume of water poured into tank (in litres) = 12 × 0.3
= 3.6
3.6 ℓ = 3 600 mℓ

The volume of water that was poured into tank was 3 600 mℓ.

b
7.2 ℓ = 7 200 mℓ
Total volume of water in tank = 3 600 + 7 200
= 10 800
10 800 mℓ = 10 800 cm3
Base area = 30 × 12
= 360
Final height of water level in tank = 10 800 ÷ 360
= 30

The final height of the water level in the tank is 30 cm.
