STUDENT OUTCOME
At the end of today’s lesson, students should be able to:
 solve word problems involving surface area using application of formula

UNDERSTANDING SURFACE AREA OF A CUBE AND CUBOID

Surface area is the measure of how much exposed area a solid has.
This is calculated by finding the total area of the six faces of a cube or cuboid.

A cube has 6 equal surface areas.

Total surface area 5 cm

= 6 × Length × Length
=6×5×5
= 150
The total surface area of the cube is 150 cm2.

For this cuboid, there are 3 different surface areas.

5 cm

7 cm
11 cm

Top area = 11 × 7 Front area = 11 × 5 Right area = 7 × 5

= 77 = 55 = 35
Total surface area = 2 × (77 + 55 + 35)
= 334
The total surface area of the cuboid is 334 cm2.

EXAMPLE 1

The figure below shows 2 identical cubes with a total volume of 250 cm3.
Find the total surface area of the 2 cubes.

SOLUTION

Volume of 1 cube = 250 ÷ 2

= 125
125 = 5 × 5 × 5
Length of one side = 5
Surface area of 1 face = 5 × 5
= 25
Total surface area of 2 cubes = 25 × 6 × 2
= 300
The total surface area of the 2 cubes is 300 cm2.

EXAMPLE 2

The figure below shows 2 identical cubes with a total surface area of 972 cm2.
Find the total volume of the 2 cubes.

SOLUTION

Number of faces = 6 × 2
= 12
Area of 1 face = 972 ÷ 12
= 81
81 = 9 × 9
Length of one side = 9
Total volume of 2 cubes = 9 × 9 × 9 × 2
= 1 458
The total volume of the 2 cubes is 1 458 cm3.

SURFACE AREA OF STACKED CUBES

Front and Back = 2 × Number of faces seen from the front/back

Top and Bottom = 2 × Number of faces seen from the top/bottom

Left and Right = 2 × Number of faces seen from the left/right

Surface Area of stacked cubes = Total number of faces × Area of each face

EXAMPLE 3

The figure below shows a solid figure made up of 1–cm cubes.

What is the total surface area of the solid including the base?

Front View

SOLUTION

Number of Front faces = Number of Back faces = 5

Number of Right faces = Number of Left faces = 4
Number of Top faces = Number of Bottom faces = 5
Total number of faces = (2 × 5) + (2 × 4) + (2 × 5)
= 10 + 8 + 10
= 28
Area of each face =1×1
=1
Total surface area = Total number of faces × Area of each face
= 28 × 1
= 28

The total surface area of the solid is 28 cm2.
