Focus on Surface Area
STUDENT OUTCOME
At the end of today’s lesson, students should be able to:
solve word problems involving surface area using application of formula
Surface area is the measure of how much exposed area a solid has.
This is calculated by finding the total area of the six faces of a cube or cuboid.
= 6 × Length × Length
=6×5×5
= 150
The total surface area of the cube is 150 cm2.

EXAMPLE 1
The figure below shows 2 identical cubes with a total volume of 250 cm3.
Find the total surface area of the 2 cubes.
SOLUTION
EXAMPLE 2
The figure below shows 2 identical cubes with a total surface area of 972 cm2.
Find the total volume of the 2 cubes.
SOLUTION
Number of faces = 6 × 2
= 12
Area of 1 face = 972 ÷ 12
= 81
81 = 9 × 9
Length of one side = 9
Total volume of 2 cubes = 9 × 9 × 9 × 2
= 1 458
The total volume of the 2 cubes is 1 458 cm3.

10 The figure below is formed by sticking different number of 2 cm cubes for each layer.
Each layer forms a square as shown.
If the whole figure is dipped into a pail of paint, what is the area of all the painted faces?
