Genetic engineering and food

Genetic engineering allows scientists to select one specific gene to implant. Genetic
engineering also helps speed up (acelerar) the process of creating new foods with
desired features (características).

Genetic engineering and agriculture

One of the most significant benefits of genetic engineering in agriculture is increased

crop production. Scientists can use genetic engineering to increase crops (colheitas),
lower food costs (baixar os custos da alimentação), improve food quality.

Genetic engineering and medicine

It can help to produce antibiotics and help to control diseases.

Genetically engineered products in foodstuffs (géneros alimentícios)

Varieties of a few fresh fruit and vegetable crops, such apples and papaya, as well as
certain grains and seeds, such as soy (soja) and canola, are bioengineered.

Many GMO crops are used to make ingredients that Americans eat such as corn (milho),
corn syrup (xarope), corn oil, or granulated sugar.

GMO - Genetically Modified Organisms

Organismos Geneticamente Modificados, frequentemente referidos pela sigla OGM, são

organismos manipulados geneticamente de modo a favorecer características desejadas,
como a cor, tamanho, etc.

The lack of information creates confusion and distrust (desconfiança) around genetic
engineering and food. There isn’t still much information about the dangers of these
products.
