1. Assertion (A)If 18 women can reap a field in 7 days, then in 22 days 6 women reap the same field
Reasons (R) –A direct proportion shows the direct the relation between two quantities. An inverse
proportion shows inverse or indirect relation between two quantities
a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A
c) A is true but R is false
d) A is false but R is true
2. Assertion (A) –A man walks 20 km in 5 hours. Then he will take 8 hours in walking 32 km

a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
b) Both A and R are true but R is not the correct explanation of A

SHORT ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS (2 x3 = 6 )

1. A car can finish a certain journey in 10 hours at the speed of 48 km/hr. By how much should its
speed be increased so that it may take only 8 hours to cover the same distance?

Solution
Let x km/hr be the speed. Then
Time (in hours)108Speed (in km/hr)48x
Last period, more speed
∴ By inverse variation
10:8=x:48⇒108=x48⇒8x=10×48⇒x=10×488=60
∴ Speed requird = 60 km/hr.
Already speed = 48 km/hr.
∴ Speed to be increase = 60-48=12 km/hr
2. A publisher gives 32% discount on the printed price of a book to booksellers. What does a book seller
pay for a book whose printed price is Rs. 275?

SOLUTION :

Printed price of a book =Rs.275

Rate of discount =32%
∴ Selling price (S.P)=M.P(100−discount%)100
=275×(100−32)100
=275×68100
=Rs.187
Hence, the bookseller has to pay Rs.187.

LONG ANSWER TYPE QUESTIONS ( 2 x 4 = 8)

3. In 15 days, the earth picks up 1.2 × 108 kg of dust from the atmosphere. In how many days it will pick
up 4.8 × 108 kg of dust?
Solution
Dust of 1.2×108 kg is picked up in 15 days
Let the dust of 4.8×108 will be picked up in x days
Therefore.
Dust (in kg)1.2×1084.8×108Days 15x
∴ 1.2×1084.8×108=4.8×108x(constant)⇒x×1.2×108=4.8×108×15⇒x=4.8×108×151.2×108=4×108×15108=60
∴ Days = 60

4. The population of a certain city was 72000 on the last day of the year 1998. During next year it
increased by 7% but due to an epidemic it decreased by 10% in the following year. What was
its population at the end of the year 2000?

Solution
On the last day of 1998,
Population of a town = 72000
In the first year, increase =7%
In the second year, decrease =10%
∴ Population in the last day of 2000
=72000(1+7100)(1−10100)
=72000×107100×910=69336
