You need revenue flowing
through your business.
You need money to flow through your business in order to be sustainable. Period. Think of
your revenue as a constant stream of water flowing through a pipe or hose. Most creative
businesses make money at the “top of the pipeline” by charging a deposit (typically 50%)
and at the “bottom of the pipeline” by charging for the rest of the project in the form of a
balance upon completion.

But what happens when there
are kinks in your pipeline?

1. Charge Enough
It sounds overly simplistic, but most new creative
entrepreneurs don’t charge enough for their services to build
a sustainable, growing business.
Imagine you had your ideal client and you wanted to pull out
all the stops. What would rolling out the red carpet for your
client look like? Who would you want on your team? How
available would you want to be? Answer these questions
then ask how much it would cost you to do the level of work
you want to do.

2. Collect Progress Payments
When you charge a 50% deposit and 50% upon completion what inevitably happens is you do 90% of the
work for 50% of the money, then chase the other 50% while working through endless rounds of revision to
finish that last 10%. Moving to a progress-billing model allows you to recoup your expenses while you’re
still working on the project. There are many ways to do this. Here are three:

Play around with different payment schedules until you find one that works for you. Bottom-line, make sure
you’re covering your costs and collecting payments as you progress through a project.
