Coraline gives horror and fantasy a whole new

meaning with its weaving of the two different
genres

Coraline is one of the horror movies of all time. It takes children’s horror and battles the idea of it being too
scary. By doing this it sets itself apart from the boring horror novels. To take a great book and make it a
timeless movie can only be done by the likes of Henry Selick (the producer of nightmare before christmas).

Coraline’s animation style

The animation style that is used in Coraline is not often seen in movies that are timeless. The style of
animation is called clay animation and is much harder then the average cartoon animation style. By making

Horror and Fantasy

“Coraline a sincere, dark fairy tale with a timely message of finding the true beauty of what you have and
who you’re with.”
Coraline portrays the message that the grass is not always greener on the other side. When Coraline first
went into the ‘other’ world the ‘other’ mother was making sure everything was perfect. The first time she
met ‘other’ Wybie was interesting as the other mother had “fixed” him when all she did was make it so that
he could not talk. The last time that they went into the world it was shown that other Wybie’s mouth was
sewn together and the ‘other’ dad was being controlled by the piano. This horrified Coraline witch is what
led her to saving the 3 children and her parents. In the end when Coraline and her parents were reunited
she could feel genuine love and not just trying to get her to stay for food.

conclusion

To sum it all up Coraline is a timeless story that effortlessly intertwines the two genre s other horror and
fantasy. It teaches us to be grateful for what we have and challenges the idea of children’s horror by
including elements of horror often not used in children’s books. It teaches kids about trusting strangers
and always being able to rely on family. This movie defiantly has the By fans tales of fairy tails and fantasy
thumb of approval.
