Higher Order Derivatives

If the function 𝑓 is differentiable, then its derivative 𝒇′ is

sometimes called the first derivative of 𝑓 or the first derived
function.
If the function 𝑓′ is differentiable, then the derivative of 𝑓′ is
called the second derivative of 𝑓. The second derivative of 𝑓 is
denoted by 𝒇′′ (read as “𝑓 double prime”).
Similarly, the third derivative of 𝑓 is defined as the derivative of
𝑓′′ provided the derivative of 𝑓′′ exists. The third derivative of 𝑓
is denoted by 𝒇′′′ (read as “𝑓 triple prime).
Higher Order Derivatives

The 𝑛!" derivative of the function 𝑓, where 𝑛 is a positive integer

greater than 1, is the derivative of the 𝑛 − 1 𝑠𝑡 derivative of 𝑓.
We denote the 𝑛!" derivative of 𝑓 by 𝑓 ($) , where 𝑛 is called the
order of the derivative. Thus, if 𝑓 ($) is the 𝑛!" derivative, we can
write the function 𝑓 itself as 𝑓 & 𝑥 .

Other symbols for the 𝑛!" derivative of 𝑓 are
