4.1.2 Personnel
Personnel shall have current or previous certification as an AWS Certified Welding
Inspector (CWI) or the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) in conformance with the
requirements of the Canadian Standard Association (CSA) standard W 178.2
An engineer or technician who, by training, experience, or both, in metals fabrication,
inspection, and testing, is competent to perform inspection of the work, may conduct
examinations in accordance with this procedure.
Inspectors shall have passed an eye examination with or without corrective lenses to
prove near vision acuity of Snellen English, or equivalent, at not less than 12 inches (305
mm) and far vision acuity of 20/40 or better.
Eye examination intervals of inspection personnel for these requirements shall not
exceed three years.

4.2 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

4.2.1 Time of Examination

Visual examinations of welds in all steels may begin immediately after the completed
welds have cooled to ambient temperature. Acceptance criteria for ASTM A514, A517,
and A709 Grades 100 and 100W steels shall be based on visual inspection performed
not less than 48 hours after completion of the weld.

4.2.2 Surface Preparation

Completed welds that are to be visually examined shall be cleaned and free of paint,
slag, or scale that could mask undercutting or other unacceptable discontinuities. Any
suitable mechanical process such as filing, grinding, machining, etc. may be used. Tightly
adhering spatter is permissible as long as it does not interfere with further nondestructive
testing or potentially mask discontinuities.

4.3 STANDARDS OF ACCEPTANCE

Table 1 shall be used to determine the discontinuity applicability and acceptance to the specified
connection design.

Cracks: The weld shall have no cracks. X X X
Weld Metal / Base Metal Fusion: Thorough fusion shall exist
between adjacent layers of weld metal and between weld metal and X X X

Craters shall be filled to the full cross section of the weld, except for
X X X
the ends of intermittent fillet welds outside of their effective length.
W-eld profiles shall be in accordance with 4.1.1.1 through 4.1.1.5. X X X

permitted to under-run the nominal fillet size by 1/16 inch (1.6 mm)
without correction, provided that the undersize portion of the weld
X X X

welds on girders, no under-run is permitted at the ends for a length
equal to twice the width of the flange.
Undercut (Non-Primary Members): For material less than 1 inch in
thickness, undercut shall not exceed 1/32 inch (0,8 mm), except that
a maximum 1/16 inch is permitted for an accumulated length of 2

inches (50 mm) in any 12 inches (305 mm). For material equal to or
greater than 1 inch thick, undercut shall not exceed 1/16 inch (1,6

Undercut (Primary Members): In Primary Members, undercut shall
be no more than 0.01 inch deep when the weld is transverse to
N/A X X

no more than 1/32 (0,8 mm) inch deep for all other cases.
Porosity: Complete Joint Penetration Groove Welds in Butt Joints
transverse to the direction computed tensile stress shall have no
visible piping porosity. For all other groove welds and for fillet welds,
the sum of the visible piping porosity 1/32 inch (0,8 mm) or greater in X N/A N/A
diameter shall not exceed 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) in any linear inch of
weld and shall not exceed 3/4 inch (19 mm) in any 12 inch (305 mm)
length of weld.
The Frequency of Piping Porosity in Fillet Welds shall not
exceed one in each 4 inches (100 mm) of weld length and the
maximum diameter shall not exceed 3/32 inch (0,8 mm). Exception:
For fillet welds connecting stiffeners to web, the sum of the N/A X X
diameters of piping porosity shall not exceed 3/8 inch (9,5 mm) in
any linear inch of weld and shall not exceed 3/4 inch (19 mm) in any
12 inch (305 mm) length of weld.
Complete Joint Penetration Groove Welds in Butt Joints transverse
to the direction of computed tensile stress shall have no piping
porosity. For all other groove welds, the frequency of piping porosity N/A X X
shall not exceed one in 4 inches (100 mm) of length and the
maximum diameter shall not exceed 3/32 inch (0,8 mm).
“X” Indicates applicability, N/A indicates Non-Applicability
NOTE: Determination of the connection loading category should be performed with the assistance of
documents of engineering

Weld profiles shall be in accordance with figure 1.

The faces of fillet welds may be slightly convex, flat, or slightly concave as shown in Figure 1(A)
and (B), with none of the unacceptable profiles shown in Figure 1(C). Except at outside welds in
corner joints, the convexity "C" of a weld or individual surface weld shall not exceed the value
given in Figure 1.
Except for undercut, as permitted by this procedure, the profile requirements do not apply to the
ends of intermittent fillet welds outside their effective length.
Groove welds shall preferably be made with slight or minimum face reinforcement except as may
be otherwise provided. In the case of butt and corner joints, the face reinforcement shall not
exceed 1/8 inch (3 mm) in height. All welds shall have a gradual transition to the plane of the
base metal surfaces with transition areas free of undercut except as allowed by Table 1. See
Figure 1(D). They shall be free of the discontinuities shown for butt joints in Figure 1(E).
Surfaces of butt joints required to be flush shall be finished so as not to reduce the thickness of
the thinner base metal or weld metal by more than 1/32 inch (0,8 mm) or 5 percent of the
thickness, whichever is smaller, nor leave reinforcement that exceeds 1/32 inch (0,8 mm).
However, all reinforcement must be removed where the weld forms part of a faying or contact
surface. Any reinforcement must blend smoothly into the plate surfaces with transition areas free
from undercut. Chipping and gouging may be used provided they are followed by grinding. Where
surface finishing is required, its roughness value shall not exceed 250 μ inches. Surfaces finished
to values of over 125 μ inches through 250 μ inches shall be finished parallel to the direction of
primary stress. Surfaces finished to values of 125 μ inches or less may be finished in any
direction.
Welds shall be free from overlap.

4.4 TEMPORARY AND TACK WELDS

If required by the project engineer, all temporary tack and attachment welds shall be removed
until flush with the component to which they were attached, or removed in accordance with
project specification requirements.
Tack welds shall be subject to the same quality requirements as the final welds.
Tack welds which are incorporated into the final weld shall be made with electrodes meeting the
requirements of the final welds and shall be cleaned thoroughly. Multi-pass tack welds shall have
cascaded ends.
Tack welds not incorporated into final welds shall be removed, except that for statically loaded
structures they need not be removed unless specifically required by project engineering.
For cyclically loaded non-tubular connections, there shall be no temporary welds in tension zones
of members made of quenched and tempered steel except at locations more than 1/6 (1,6 mm) of
the depth of the web from tension flanges of beams or girders; temporary welds at other locations
shall be shown on shop drawings.
Tack welds produced with the SAW method in the form of fillet welds 3/8 inch (9,5 mm) or
smaller, or in the roots of joints requiring specific root penetration shall not produce objectionable
changes in the appearance of the weld surface or result in decreased penetration.

4.5 ARC STRIKES

Arc strikes outside the area of permanent welds should be avoided on any base metal. Cracks or
blemishes caused by arc strikes shall be ground to a smooth contour and checked visually to
ensure soundness.
