1. INTRODUCTION

Magsaysay, one of the eleven municipalities in Occidental Mindoro which lies on the

southernmost part of Mindoro Island, is characterized by rugged terrain with plain areas

and has various river systems which is being utilized for irrigation. It is politically

subdivided into 12 barangays, one of which is Barangay Nicolas. According to the 2020

census, it has a population of 4,136. This represented 10.40% of the total population of

Magsaysay.

One of the astonishing places located at Nicolas is the Bukal Spring which is seen as

a source of income in Sitio Bukal. The hanging bridge in Bukal Spring connects the

community of Sitio Bukal to the mainland. It is the only route that serves the residents

making easiest way to cross different barangay since it can carry two-wheeled vehicles.

The need for new cable suspension bridges arises from the increasing demands of
modern transportation systems, population growth, and the aging infrastructure.

However, during heavy rain the water overflows from the deck of the bridge which

makes the locals concerned about their safety, having difficulty evacuating and

increasing the risk of accidents as the primary concern of the stability and availability of

the bridge.

Safety is of paramount importance in any infrastructure project, particularly bridges.

The stability assesses a proposed cable bridge load-carrying capacity, ensuring it can

withstand anticipated loads, vehicular traffic, environmental forces (wind and seismic

activity), and potential future expansions.

Stability provides the structure's ability to withstand various forces and loads without

failure or excessive deformation.

Thus, the researcher proposed a design of a new suspension bridge that can

accommodate different types of passenger vehicle not exceeding 5000kg/5tons to

ensure safety and reliable transportation. This will focus on giving the commuters safe

travel and providing protection to the residents.

2. METHODOLOGY

The methodology of the project has been thorough and inclusive. A comprehensive

literature survey was carried out after the objectives and site selection were established. The

review included an examination of previous work published in journals, conferences and books.

In order to ensure a complete understanding of the entire undertaking, the project has been

implemented in accordance with the codes and standards for bridge.

Research Design

In this study, the researchers use descriptive method in determining the compatibility of

the proposed design at Bukal Spring, Nicolas, Magsaysay. Both qualitative and quantitative

approaches are present in this study through data collection and analysis of the proposed design.

Data collection includes specifications, simulations, relevant literature and databases, interviews

with experts, and surveys to gauge residents' perspectives. This comprehensive approach aims to

cover aspects and practical considerations for the proposed design.

Sampling, Testing, and Gathering of Data

The soil sample in Bukal Spring, Nicolas Magsaysay will undergo soil testing which is

California Bearing Ratio (CBR) to acquire the desired data needed for the simulation. Obtaining

soil bearing capacity were necessary as it provides data that will determine the maximum load

applied in soil to prevent the failure in foundation. California Bearing Ratio (CBR)t will

determine the strength and bearing capacity of the obtained sample. The results will help in

determining the behavior of the soil in different loads applied.

The location of the water table which is the boundary between the unsaturated soil and

the saturated soil shall be obtained as it has correlation with the soil bearing capacity. There is a

tendency that the bearing capacity of the soil will be reduced if the location of the water table

were near the foundation.

Software/Equipment Used

The software and equipment necessary for the implementation of this project shall be

provided as follows:

1. STAAD: used for modelling and analysis.

2. SketchUp: used for modelling of scale reduced prototype.

3. AutoCAD: used for plan and sectional drawing.

Codes and Standards

The design calculations were conducted in accordance with the National Structural Code

of the Philippines for Bridges (NSCP) 1997, and the Department of Public Works and Highways

(DPWH). Maximum moment, shear, and axial loads were taken into consideration during the

design process to guarantee structural integrity and adherence to accepted practices.
