No hostage situation involving Indian
students in besieged city of Kharkiv: MEA
NEW DELHI : India on Thursday
rejected claims by both Russia and
Ukraine that Indian students are
being held hostage in the besieged
city of Kharkiv, and said it has
requested the support of Ukrainian
authorities in arranging special
trains for taking them out from the
city and neighbouring areas.
“We have not received any report
of any hostage situation regarding
any student. We have requested the
support of Ukrainian authorities in
arranging special trains for taking
out students from Kharkiv and neigh-
bouring areas to the western part of
the country,” External Affairs Minis-
try Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi
said.
Meanwhile, the Indian Air Force
(IAF) said that four of its evacuation
flights with 798 Indians from the
Romanian capital Bucharest, Hun-
gary’s Budapest and Polish city Rzes-
zow landed at the Hindon airbase on
Thursday morning. Its first flight
carrying 200 people from Bucharest
landed at 1.30 am. The second flight
brought back 210 Indians from Buda-

recovering species for ecosystem res-
toration, Union Environment Minis-
ter Bhupender Yadav said on Thurs-
day on the occasion of World Wildlife
Day.
Yadav, who is in Nairobi to attend
the special session of the 5th United
Nations Environment Assembly, also
said India is mindful of the problems
that threaten the delicate balance of
the ecosystem.
This year, World Wildlife Day is
being celebrated with the theme
Recovering Key Species for Ecosys-
tem Restoration’.
“We are committed to recovering
key species for ecosystem restora-
tion,” Yadav tweeted.
On December 20, 2013, at its 68th
session, the UN General Assembly
proclaimed March 3, the day of sign-
ing of the Convention on Interna-
tional Trade in Endangered Species of
Wild Fauna and Flora in 1973, as UN
World Wildlife Day to celebrate and
raise awareness of the world’s wild

Indians from Ukraine arrive at the
Hindon Air Base, Ghaziabad on
Thursday after being evacuated by the
IAF' from Bucharest, Romania ANI

A short while later, the IAF’s third
evacuation flight arrived at the air-
base from Rzeszow with 208 Indians.
“The fourth flight of an IAF C-17
from Bucharest landed at Hindon at
8:15 am. As many as 180 passengers,
mostly students, were on board,” the
IAF noted in a statement. “Today, the
IAF is operating three more flights to
various locations in the neighbour-
hood of Ukraine towards the effort,”

HYDERABAD: In a setback to the YS
Jagan Mohan Reddy government in
Andhra Pradesh, the high court on
Thursday declared Amaravati as the
capital city of the state. It also
declared that the government has no
right to enact any legislation on the
new capitals for the state.
A three-member bench headed by
chief justice Prashant Kumar Mishra,
which was hearing petitions filed by
Amaravati farmers’ joint action com-
mittee and other individuals, directed
that the state government should not
shift any office from Amaravati to
any other place. The petitions
opposed the law enacted for three
state capitals. In November 2021, the
government repealed the legislation
saying it will bring in a fresh fool-
proof law to ensure no legal hurdles.
But the court continued to hear the
petitions. Chief minister YS Jagan
Mohan Reddy in December 2019
announced the government’s plan for
the executive, judicial, and legislative
capitals in Visakhapatnam, Kurnool,

NEW DELHI: The national capital witnessed a
sunny morning on Thursday with the mini-
mum temperature being recorded at 13.7 °C ,
a notch above the season’s average. The mete-
orological department had predicted a partly
cloudy sky with the possibility of light rain or
drizzle. According to the India Meteorological
Department (IMD), the maximum tempera-
ture on Thursday will hover around 28°C .
The relative humidity at 8.30 am was 83%.
Delhi’s air quality also improved to the ‘mod-
erate’ category on Thursday morning with the
AQI at 9 am being 193, Central Pollution Con-
trol Board data showed. On Wednesday, the
air quality was in the ‘poor’ category with an

‘67% girls in urban slums
missed online classes’
NEW DELHI: A study conducted in urban slums
of Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Telangana
revealed that 67% of girls did not attend online
classes and 56% did not get time for recrea-
tional activities during the Covid-induced
lockdown in 2020. The study by NGO Save
The Children in February last year also found
that 68% of girls aged between 10 and 18 years,
faced challenges in accessing health and
nutrition services in these states. Delhi,
Maharashtra, Bihar and Telangana repre-
sented four geographical zones -- East, West,
North and South. The states were selected
using a composite measure, including metrics
such as incidence of Covid-19, child sex ratio,
women getting married before 18 years,

Lodhi Colony has now some new quirky resi-
dents -- a flying ‘fish’, an ‘owl’ on roller skates
and a ‘flamingo’ on a bicycle. This colourful
menagerie has been imagined by two women
– a graphic novel artist from Germany and an
architect-illustrator from India -- who joined
hands to create a dazzling mural in the heart
of the national capital.
The collaborative work titled Fish Out of
Water took two weeks.

TOKYO: The Omicron strain of Cov-
id-19 is at least 40% more lethal than
seasonal flu, according Japanese sci-
entists, underscoring the potential
danger of lifting pandemic curbs too

virus’s ongoing health risks. The case
fatality rate of Omicron in Japan,
based on cumulative excess deaths
and the number of infections since
January, was about 0.13%, according
to an analysis by scientists who

lier in the outbreak, it’s still higher

Schools represent a powerful medium

citizens in the coming decades will

social and civil behaviour. What direc-
tion India will take and the zenith it
will reach will depend on today’s bud-
ding teenagers. Politics is an integral
part of any society and it channelises
development of any country. In
today’s times, students should not be
kept in silos and isolated from politi-
cal changes. Middle school is the right
time to introduce this subject to them.
In our school, news is read in the
morning assemblies & then discussed
in classes. Cartoons, articles, newspa-
per clippings on various political
issues are shared and used for
debates. Freedom of expression by

any preconceived notions results in

KYIV : Russian troops seized Kherson,
the first major Ukrainian city to fall
in a war that has driven one million
civilians from their homes, ahead of
ceasefire talks on Thursday.
With the diplomatic and economic
costs mounting for Russian President
Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian leader
Volodymyr Zelensky extolled his own
people’s “heroic” resistance.
He said that around 9,000 Russian
soldiers had been killed since the
invasion began eight days ago.
Announcing its own toll for the first
time, Moscow said it had lost 498
troops.
“We are a nation that broke the
enemy’s plans in a week,” President
Zelensky said in a video posted on the
Telegram messaging service.
However, after a three-day siege
that left Kherson short of food and
medicine, Ukrainian officials con-
ceded the loss of the Black Sea city of
290,000 people.
While a huge military column is
stalled north of Ukraine’s capital
Kyiv, Russian troops have been
advancing on the southern front, and
are besieging the important port city
of Mariupol east of Kherson.

sian and Belarusian athletes have
been banned from the Winter Para-
lympic Games for their countries’
roles in the war in Ukraine, the Inter-
national Paralympic Committee said
on Thursday in Beijing.
The about-face comes less than 24
hours after the IPC on Wednesday
announced it would allow Russian
and Belarusian athletes to compete
when the Games open on Friday, but
only as neutral athletes with colours,
flags and other national symbols
