Q1. Report the following in SI units to three significant figures using appropriate prefixes.
0.631 𝑀𝑚
i) 8.60 𝑘𝑔×8.60 𝑘𝑔
(204 𝑚𝑚)(0.00457 𝑘𝑔
ii) 34.6 𝑁
(35 𝑚𝑚)(35 𝑚𝑚 )
iii) (48 𝑘𝑔)3
1000 𝑘𝑁
iv) 2000 𝑚𝑚×200 𝑚𝑚
Q2. For 𝜃 = 45° 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑇 = 8 𝑘𝑁, determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force
acting on the eyebolt.
Q3. Find the angle 𝜃 (0 ≤ 𝜃 ≥ 90) so that the component of force along AC is 500 kN. Find
the force in strut AB. (Assume 𝜑 = 30°)
400 kN
Q4. A man, standing on a weighing balance of 85 kg, holds one end of a rope that passes over
a pulley vertically above his head. The other end of the rope is attached to a concrete block of
mass 60 kg. Find the reading on the weighing balance. Draw necessary FBDs.
Q5. It is required to tow a boat a constant speed along the canal. A resultant force R= 400 kN
is required. Two horses H1 and H2 on the canal banks are used to accomplish the resultant force.
The ropes connecting the boat to the horses H1 and H2 make angles α =35° and β=25°
respectively. Find the tension in the ropes?
Q7. An electric lamp is suspended from a small ring B, supported by flexible and massless
wires AB and CB. Find the force in the wires if length of AB=BC= 10 m and BD =4 m. A and
C are at same level.

Q8. Find the magnitude and direction of FA such that resultant of FA and FB has a magnitude of
1250 N and is directed along positive x-axis?
Q9. Resolve the force F= 250 N into two components acting along u and v directions?
