WAVE OPTICS - SHEET: 6(Lecture-6)
1. A parallel beam of light of wavelength 560 nm falls on a thin film of oil (refractive index = 1.4). What should be
the minimum thickness of the film so that it strongly reflects the light?

2. A parallel beam of white light is incident normally on a water film 1.0  104 cm thick. Find the wavelength in
the visible range (400 nm-700 nm) which are strongly transmitted by the film. Refractive index of water = 1.33.

3. A soap film of thickness 0.0011 mm appears dark when seen by the reflected light of wavelength 580 nm.
What is the index of refraction of the soap solution, if it is known to be between 1.2 and 1.5?

4. A glass surface is coated by an oil film of uniform thickness 1.00  104 cm. The index of refraction of the oil is
1.25 and that of the glass is 1.50. Find the wavelengths of light in the visible region (400 nm-750 nm) which
are completely transmitted by the oil film under normal incidence.

5. Two monochromatic coherent sources of wavelength 5000 Å are P

6. The outer surface of a transparent glass slab of refractive index S = 1.5 is coated by a thin layer of
transparent medium of refractive index C = 1.6. Orange light of wave length 6400 Å fall normally on the coat.
The reflected light at the upper surface and at the lower surface of the coat interfere destructively. If thickness
of the coat is 5K  108 m, calculate the minimum value of K.

7. White light is incident normally on a glass plate of thickness 0.50  106 and index of refraction 1.50. Which
wavelengths in the visible region (400 nm-700 nm) are strongly reflected by the plate?

(2) from medium (1) and  is wavelength of light in air.

9. A long narrow horizontal slit is placed 1 mm above a horizontal plane mirror. The interference between the
light coming directly from the slit and that after reflection is seen on a screen 1.0 m away from the slit. Find the
fringe-width if the light used has wavelength of 700 nm.
10. Two point monochromatic and coherent sources of light of wavelength  are
placed on the dotted line in front of an infinite screen. The source emit waves
in phase with each other. The distance between S1 and S2 is d while their
distance from the screen is much larger :

11. In the figure shown A and B are two thin transparent slabs of refractive air
indices 1 and 2 (2 > 1) and there is no gap between A and B. A beam of
t1 A 1
