Materials
Hooks:
For majority of pattern – 3.25 mm/US D/3
For chain stitches at opening – 4.00 mm/US G/6

Yarn:
Worsted weight yarn (I use Caron simply soft)
Pokeball colors - red (Caron: harvest red), black, white
Poliwag colors - blue (Caron: berry blue), white, black, light blue (Caron: soft
blue), pink (Caron: plum wine)
Total yardage estimated by weight: ~100 yards, a bit more than half of this will be
blue yarn and small amounts of light blue, black, white, and pink. About the other
half of the total will be the pokeball which is about half red/white and a small
amount of black.

Some Fiberfill Stuffing, between the pokeball and pokemon (maybe a handful, sorry I
did not measure) and a small amount for the feet.

Sewing Notions:
Tapestry needle
Sewing needle
Black and blue 6in (15.24 cm) zippers
7 sewing pins to help hold zipper on the pokeball while you sew
Sewing thread in red, black, and blue

Pattern
I have a video showing how to crochet the pokeball https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL87ctaQ/
Notes
If you are struggling, don't be afraid to reach out to me, the nerd gremlin, on Tiktok. I am
human and it's possible I made a mistake or need to rewrite something so it's clearer.

When working in the round, I work in a spiral rather than chaining 1 at the end of all my
rounds, it's just easier for me. When changing colors, use a method that minimizes
visual disjointenness because you will see it in the finished project. I like this method
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL8WMaem/, but make sure you are maintaining 42 stitches
when you use it!

Finish off usually means to ch 1 and pull a tail though
If you are working a circle you can sl st in the next stitch and then ch 1 and pull through
the tail to make the circle more even.

Pokeball
Start with red yarn. This is because you can make a prettier center with a magic ring
than you can when finishing and closing a ball.
Make a magic circle or your preferred method for starting a round.

Round 1: 6 sc (magic ring with 6 SC)

Round 2: (inc) X 6 [12]
Round 3: (sc, inc) X 6 [18]
Round 4: (2 sc, inc) X 6 [24]
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) X 6 [30]
Round 6: (4 sc, inc) X 6 [36]
Round 7: (5 sc, inc) X 6 [42]
Rounds 8 - 10: 42 sc
Round 11: Change to black yarn 6 sc, use 4.00mm/US G/6 hook to make 31 ch (note
this is one more than you technically need, doing so makes the next round easier),
return to using 3.25mm US D/3 to make 6 sc. The first of these 6 is in the 31th stitch
from the last worked stitch 6 sc.
Round 12: Change to white yarn 6 sc, work in the bottom bumps of the chain stitches,
30 sc, 6 sc (count your stitches before continuing to the next round! You should have
42).
Round 13 - 14: 42 SC
Round 15: (5 sc, dec) X 6 [36]
Round 16: (4 sc, dec) X 6 [30]
Round 17: (3 sc, dec) X 6 [24]
Round 18: (2 sc, dec) X 6 [18]
Round 19: (sc, dec) X 6 [12]
Round 20: (dec) X 6 [6], finish off and leave a long tail for sewing.
Round 21: sew opening closed by threading tapestry needle though all 6 sc outer legs.
Hide the tail in some stitches and leave the rest of the tail in the pokeball.

Pokemon button
Round 1: magic ring with 6 sc, close ring with black yarn with sl st
Round 2: (inc) X 6 [12] finish off and leave a long tail for sewing the button to pokeball
Sew button to pokeball top (red) at the center front (count 15 stitches from the edge).
Center the button vertically, it’s center should be at the edge of the red pokeball
opening. (An easy mistake and somewhat unavoidable issue is putting the button too

high such that it's not centered when the pokeball is closed.) Sew the top ~6 sc to
pokeball. Threading tapestry needle around two legs of the button and through the
pokeball stitches. Then secure the back middle of the button to the pokeball by
threading a tapestry needle through the back threads of the button and the legs of the
red pokeball edge. Hide the tail in some stitches and leave the rest of the tail in the
pokeball. If you are confused, you can see me doing this in the video I lined earlier
https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTL87ctaQ/

Add zipper
Mark halfway point (3 inches) and use sewing pins to hold the zipper to the pokeball.
With the zipper closed, put the zipper pull on the left side
Pin the zipper bottom (black and white) and middle (either side of the button) of the top
(red) with the zipper closed (to help improve alignment) then unzip and finish pinning
the zipper (top left and right sides).
Sew zipper with matching thread (black and red). Sew not too close to the teeth, if you
sew right next to the teeth you will have a hard time closing the zipper when you are
finished with everything. Sew ~ ¼ inches away from the teeth.
Have at least as many stitches as there are crochet stitches.

Poliwag

Body
Same pattern as the pokeball sphere but only use blue yarn.
The body of Poliwag will have the hinge stitches at the bottom where the feet will go.
The top of its head will have the zipper opening.

Feet (ovals)
Use blue yarn

Round 1: 8 sc (magic ring with 8 SC)
Round 2-9: 8 sc
Add stuffing
Round 10: sew opening closed by threading tapestry needle though all 6 sc outer legs.
Leave a long tail for sewing to the body.
Use tapestry needle to sew foot to body at row 13 of body and 3 stitches left/right of the
start of the rounds of the body. Make enough stitches so the foot is secure and not to
floppy attach at the back and halfway up, leave the front of the foot free.
Repeat for other foot

Tummy
Use white yarn
Round 1: 6 sc (magic ring with 6 SC)
Round 2: (inc) X 6 [12]
Round 3: (sc, inc) X 6 [18]
Round 4: (2 sc, inc) X 6 [24]
Round 5: (3 sc, inc) X 6 [30]
Finish off leaving long tail, sew to the body
Make the swirl (remember poliway swirl is clockwise) with some black yarn by making
embroidery back stitches. You put your needle up through the back and put it in one
previous. Start at the stitch you ended at and one row in then follow the crochet stitches
spiraling all the way to the center
Use a tapestry needle to sew to the body. Put the center of the tummy shifted down
from the center of the body with the center of the tummy at row 3 of the body. Put the
start of the swirl near its right foot (your left).

Eyes
Use black yarn
Round 1: magic ring with 6 sc
Round 2: (inc) X 6 [12]
Switch to white yarn but leave a long tail of the black yarn to sew the black part of the
eye to the body.
Round 3: (sc, inc) X 2 [14], finish off and leave a long tail for sewing the white part to the
body
Repeat for the other eye
Attach to the body, find the center of the opening, 15 stitches from the opening edge,
this is the midpoint, position the eyes so there are three stitches between them. Use the
long tails and tapestry needle to sew the eyes to the body. hide tail below eye and
through to the inside of the body.
Add eye glint to each eye with white yarn wrapping around a few stitches of the eye
(essentially a satin embroidery stitch) and hiding the tails in the body and tying them
together.

Mouth
Use pink yarn
Round 1: Magic ring with 6 sc
Round 2: (inc) X 6 [12]
Finish off and leave a long tail for sewing
Sew to the body under the eyes and with the bottom just at the top of the white tummy.

Tail
Use light blue yarn
Round 1: ch 7, 1 turning ch
Round 2: work in the top legs of the ch stitches 5 sc, 3 sc in the last ch, 4 sc on the
other side legs (catching the starting tail under these stitches) 2 sc in the last ch.
Round 3: inc, 5 sc, inc X 3, 5 sc, inc X 2
Round 4: sc, inc, 5 sc, (sc, inc) X 3, 5 sc, (sc, inc) X 2

Round 5: 2 sc, inc, 5 sc, (2 sc, inc) X 3, 5 sc, (2 sc, inc) X 2
Finish off and weave in end

Tail attachment piece

Use blue yarn
Note this is similar to the start of the tail but slightly different
Round 1: ch 6, 1 turning ch
Round 2: work in the top legs of the ch stitches 5 sc, sc in last ch stitch, 4 sc on the
other side legs (catching the starting tail under these stitches) finish off, put the slip
stitch in the first stitch of the round to close the gap. Leave a long tail. Use the natural
bend to fold the piece like a hotdog. Use a tapestry needle to sew together the outside
legs of the top. You should get a stem/tube like piece when done. Leave a long tail to
attach to the body (you can thread the needle through the tube so it’s back at the
square end and attach that part of this piece to round 19 of the body (shifted down from
center).

Use some blue yarn and thread from the inside of the body through the tail attachment
piece and exiting through the tip, sew this piece to the light blue tail by threading several
stitches so about half an inch is overlapping. There is one side of the tail attachment
tube that is more flat, lay that against the light blue tail piece. Hide the tail back through
the tail attachment piece.

Use some blue yarn to make the detective blue line through the center holes in the light
blue tail piece. Make a slip stitch and pull it up just above where the tail attachment
piece ended. Insert your hook in the next hole up the center line and pull up a loop and
slip it then do this again and again until you reach the last center hole stitch. Finish off
and hide the tail by threading to the backside and wrapping it around the back stitches.
Hide the starting tail of the slip stitch in the tail attachment piece.

Add zipper
Add the zipper in the same way as the pokeball but you can use all blue thread.

Combine the pokeball and the pokemon together

Put the pokeball inside the pokemon such that you can see the outside of the pokeball
(i.e wrong sides together). Also put the pokeball in upside down so when both zippers
are unzipped the pulls of the zippers are on opposite sides.
Use blue thread and sew the two sides of the opening together. Make sure your needle
only just catches the zipper and the back side of the yarn threads of the pokeball so you
don't see blue thread on the pokeball side. You can add some stuffing before you are
completely done sewing them together. I often forget to do this before finishing and will
use my hook to grab some stuffing and pull it through one of the crochet stitches on the
top side and bottom side of the pokeball. I add stuffing until it feels like a sphere.

Try to open and close the zipper that is on the outside. Flip and do the same for the
other way. If it does not close, don't force it, look for where it's getting caught, you might
have a loose thread that got caught or maybe the medal head of the zipper got caught
in the zipper ribbon.
