them.aspx

Summary Narrative:
Privacy is a common term that is mostly used in the online world. It is defined as the right of a person not to
disclose any personal information. In an online context, privacy is your right to determine what personal data
is gathered from you and where it will be used. On the other hand, the internet makes our lives more
meaningful and enjoyable, but we didn’t know that it is full of threats and scams that make you vulnerable or
at risk. The Internet makes our communication around the world faster while putting our lives at risk when not
properly used. Most Filipinos lack awareness of the proper netiquette to be followed when dealing online. We
tend to ignore the risks associated with using the internet, which threaten our lives and privacy.

In this article, the topic deals with the top three major issues concerning online privacy. The list includes
spying and snooping, mishandling of information, and location tracking. Spying and snooping are about
tracking your personal interests while you are browsing the internet. Online trackers are the ones that track
your browser history and online activities while you are unaware of them. Thus, it gives them an idea of who
you are and what your personal interests are. But be aware of it, as other cybercriminals may use the data
they collected for illegal activities that may put you at risk. Moreover, mishandling of information such as your
personal data online can also put you at risk, as anyone can access it. The trend today is online scams.
Scammers use your personal information to collect money from others or hack your online bank accounts,

leaving you with nothing. And the last major issue is location tracking, wherein some apps can track your real-
time location. Cybercriminals are wise enough to track your real-time locations, collect that information, and
perform their illegal activities, thus putting you at risk and vulnerable to cybercrimes.

What lessons have you learned:

Netiquette, or online etiquette, is proper etiquette performed when using the internet. You have to be mindful
of the online environment, set boundaries, and instill respect online, whether in personal data or proper
internet communication. We cannot deny the fact that most of us are unaware of the negative effects of using
the internet. We are unaware of the risks we will face after improper use of the internet, such as giving our
personal data and information online. Online scamming is rampant today due to the mishandling of
information disclosed online. Cybercriminals are so fond of your mishandled information that they may use it
to gain money and authority. The experience of being scammed is like someone invading your home, which is
your privacy. Thus, it is very important that we raise awareness of what we are doing online and double check
if our online activities are safe to do.

What suggestions can you offer?

Always check the website you are using to see if it is reliable and if the information you disclose online is fully
safe from cybercriminals. Risks are always there, but being aware of the outcome that might happen in the
end is an important thing that you should consider. Read articles that help you learn about and raise
awareness about online scams, fraud, and phishing. Attend cyber lessons online or offline. Secure your
personal data on your phone or computer properly.
