customer time and money whilst
meeting their construction needs.
CEMEX were approached by our customer to
find a solution for an external concreted area
to upgrade and extend the grounds at Blaise
Castle Plant Nursery. The Nursery has enjoyed great
success in producing over 2.5 million plants per year
for local authorities and required the additional ground-
space to meet their continually growing demands.
THE CHALLENGE
The project required a versatile concrete mix that would
be suitable for a number of different applications,
capable of withstanding extreme weather conditions
and various payloads. The slab’s multi-purpose nature
meant that it would be utilised for temporary buildings
and light foot traffic, but also requires the necessary
strength to be used as external paving, dealing with
heavy tractor and lorry movements.
The specification outlined the use of a steel fibre mix
which presented both high costs and issues with space
availability at our plant. In order to supply the contract
to the specification, CEMEX would require an additional
conveyor to add steel fibres to the concrete mix. Due
to the size of this equipment and the limited space
significantly affecting the rate of delivery.
A very tight schedule meant our customer was keen
complete the job in the minimum amount of pours,
therefore an alternative solution was required.
THE SOLUTION
The CEMEX Technical Team identified the opportunity
to utilise our Advanced Paving mix following a thorough
review of the specification and meetings with the
customer.
Advanced Paving is CEMEX’s specially designed mix
that combines micro and macro-synthetic fibres to
offer exceptional reinforcement and cost savings over
traditional steel fibres.
The need for sizable conveyor equipment was negated
by using Advance Paving, as fibres are added directly
into the mixer truck via a soluble bag.
THE OUTCOME
CEMEX were able to assign more trucks to the works
by eliminating the need for the conveyor equipment.
This reduced turn-around-times and allowed CEMEX
to complete the job in fewer pours, saving a significant
amount of time and resources. Advanced Paving’s
unique composition of Polypropolyne Fibres a resulted in
substantial cost savings for our customer - successfully
delivering a final, robust product that will meet their
needs for many years to come.
