2 Safety Instructions
2.1 Application
The Smile controller family DHC/SDC is designed exclusively for the control of warm
water heating and district heating systems including domestic hot water control.
These systems should not exceed a flow temperature of 120 °C.
CAUTION The heating installation must be completed and filled with water in order to
prevent the pumps from running dry and to avoid damage for the boiler.
The heating specialist must check the complete installation before switching
on the controller.
IMPORTANT NOTE! The actual time and date are already adjusted from the factory and backed up by a
battery.
There is a basic time program already activated and the control functions for
standard heating systems with low temperature boilers are pre-adjusted.
If this happens the back-up battery will be unnecessarily stressed. Also the frost
protection functions of the controller will be out of order.

upper part of the display provides an overview of all the programmed cycles between
00:00 and 24:00 of the selected weekday.
IMPORTANT NOTE! The switch-off time cannot be later than the switch-on time of a following cycle (if
available).
When a setting of the switch-off time is made, the relevant time bar display on the
right is adjusted.
If the switch-off time coincides with the switch-on time, the relevant cycle is deleted.
A following cycle (if available) replaces automatically the deleted cycle when
acquired.
After acquiring the switch-off time the relevant cycle temperature starts to flash on
the display and can be set immediately with the rotary pushbutton. In the case of
heating circuits the displayed cycle temperature always refers to the desired room
temperature, while in the case of the DHW circuit it refers to the desired water heater
normal temperature in the selected cycle.

EN2H-0221GE51 R1105 48
Operation SDC / DHC 43
The direct heating circuit’s pump remains active during reduced mode (see Time
Program). The flow temperature is determined by the relevant reduced heating
characteristic according to the decreased room temperature. The temperature will
not fall below the set low limit.
Application: Buildings with low insulation values and high heating losses.
During reduced mode the direct heating circuit is completely switched off in case of
outside temperatures exceeding the set frost protection limit. The heat generator
minimum temperature limit is deactivated. The heating circuit pump is switched off
with a short delay in order to avoid a safety switch-off owing to heat accumulation in
the heat generator (pump extended running time).
If the outside temperature falls below the specified frost protection limit, the controller
switches from switch-off mode (ECO) to reduced mode (ABS) and the heating circuit
temperature is adjusted according to the set reduced setpoint considering the low
limit of the heat generator.
IMPORTANT NOTE! The mode set here applies also for the operating modes: ABSENCE and
CONSTANT REDUCED operating modes.
Function This parameter refers to the type of heating system (floor-, radiator-, or convector
heating) and can be compared to the exponent of the relevant heat exchanger. The
setting determines the curvature of the heating characteristic of the unmixed circuit
and compensates the performance losses at low temperatures by means of its
progressive characteristic.
Depending on the type of heating system the following settings are recommended:

Thus there is a flexible way either to use the preconfigured applications (very low
start up effort) or the much more flexible, individual adjustment in the parameter
menues.
CAUTION The hydraulic parameters define the system. Any change can have extensive
effectes on the function and efficiency. Please take care when you adjust
parameters manually for special applications.
Explanation Only the existing in- and outputs of the hardware will appear in the hydraulic menue.
Example:
PARAMETER 05 defines the output of the heating circuit pump. The default setting
is: heating circuit pump.
However this output can also be configured for e.g. the DHW circulation pump.
Example:
The parameters for the circulation pump are only accessable if the HC pump output
has ben assigned for the circulation pump.
If a variable function requires an input value (sensor), then by force this will be
assigned at the matching variable input. This input can no longer be manually
changed.
If the user has defined a different input variable before, then this will be reset and
replaced.
Example:
The variable input has been assigned the 2nd outdoor sensor. The variable output 1
will now be a adjusted to the function of a buffer loading pump. The variable input 1
will then be automatically reset and then assigned to the buffer sensor, because this
information is vital for the control function.

SDC / DHC 43 Control Functions
The Smile controllers have three separate switching time programs for each heating
circuit.
When supplied, only one switching time program is enabled. The use of only a single
switching time program for a wide range of applications makes it possible to simplify

With parameter 01 in the ”Hydraulic” menu a preselection can be made from the
hydraulic schemes collection . The corresponding inputs and outputs are assigned
automatically according to the hydraulic diagram and can be altered if necessary.
The relevant system diagrams are available in a separate document.

SDC / DHC 43 Control Functions
Variable inputs The selected functions can be assigned only once and are then no longer callable in
other variable inputs. If an input function is absolutely necessary for a corresponding
output function with regard to the variable outputs, no selection is possible.
Function This parameter takes into account the relevant building type by means of various
calculation methods for the determination of the outside temperature mean value
according to the setting.

was defined as the relevant figure in outdoor sensor allocation.
A parasol symbol in the basis display indicated that summer switch-off is active. If
the heating circuits are operated separately (system parameter “Operating mode”)
this symbol will be missing. If two outdoor sensors are connected to the system and
these two sensors were assigned to different heating circuits, the symbol will only be
displayed if both sensors fulfill the condition for summer switch-off.
If the room temperature drops below the set room setpoint, the heating is resumed.
The heating is switched off if the room temperature exceeds the set room target
value by 1 K. If at this moment the outside temperature is still below the freezing
limit, the heating circuit pumps remain active.
NOTE! If not each heating circuit is operated with room temperature sensing, different frost
protection functions can be assigned to the single heating circuit. If, for example, a
mixing circuit is operated with room temperature sensing and the direct heating
circuit is not, the latter’s heating characteristic and room temperature setpoint are to
be set as low as possible.
In connection with a 2nd external sensor the frost protection function is activated, as
soon as one of the two outside temperatures drops below the frost protection limit.
CAUTION In connection with a room sensor the thermostat function is not active with
active frost protection.

Control Functions SDC / DHC 43
Cycle Operation
The frost protection function is activated as soon as the temperature drops below the
set frost protection limit (SYSTEM-PARAMETER 05). The frost protection function
becomes effective when frost protection is active and there is no request for the
heating circuit.
• With the frost protection setting “Cycle operation”, there is no continuous request
for the heat generator, in contrast to continuous operation.
• With the system frost protection active, the heating circuit pumps are switched on
and the mixer valves closed.
• As long as the measured flow temperature of the mixer circuits or the heat
generator temperature in the direct heating circuit, respectively, does not drop
below the set nominal room temperature (RTFrost or RTNight), no demand value is
posted to the heat generator.
• When the flow temperature drops below the set nominal room temperature,
heating is activated.
• Once the nominal flow temperature has reached the nominal room temperature
and the set time (SYSTEM-PARAMETER 19) has passed, the demand value
to the heat generator is retracted and the mixer valve closes while the pumps
continue running.
• If no data are detected from the outdoor sensor (e.g. because the sensor is
defective), only the pumps are switched on while heating is disabled.
• The set minimum and maximum limits are taken into account in heating
operation.
• When the heat generator is activated, the set start-up protection conditions of the
heat generator are applied. This can mean that the heating circuit pumps are
switched off temporarily.
If system malfunction message 30-3 or 31-3 occur (e.g. switch-on failure of the
burner(s) due to fuel shortage burner malfunction), priority pump switch-off functions
such as boiler start-up protection, hot-water priority etc. are disabled if frost
protection is active.
The heating water circulated in the heating circuits adopts the overall mean room
temperature and reduces or delays any freezing.

Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
Function There are three different modes of start-up protection that can be set:
The heat generator switches on when the temperature falls below the set value,
while it switches off when the set value plus the burner switching differential is
exceeded. During heating the limit temperature will be maintained.
This setting is used only for the reaction of the heat generator (burner) to reaching
the set minimum temperature ( KTmin −WEZ ). The function for the heat generator
remains unchanged.
The mode of operation of the set limit is defined via the heat generator parameter
“Heat generator start-up protection”.
EN2H-0221GE51 R1105 70
SDC / DHC 43 Hydraulic Components and their Functions
There are three different modes of operation for the minimum temperature limit:
The burner is switched on again if the temperature in the heat generator falls below
the limit value by half of the burner switching differential plus 2 K.
• If the boiler temperature KTact <= parameter 27 (KTmin-HK), the heating circuit
pumps (DKP, SLP, MKP) are switched off and the mixer valves are closed.
• The heating circuit pumps and mixer valves are enabled again as soon as KTact>
KTmin-HK + SKmin-HK is fulfilled.

Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
CAUTION Only Ag (hard silver), Au (gold) or Ni (nickel) are to be used for the contacts.
In case of a sensor short circuit a relevant malfunction message appears and the
burner is blocked.
The control of the heat generator is carried out only manually by means of the
mechanical boiler temperature controller (boiler thermostat) on the boiler panel
according to the set value.
CAUTION This activation is only permitted if there is a boiler thermostat in the burner
circuit. In the other case there is the danger of boiler overheating!
NOTE! If the temperature in the heat generator exceeds the set heat generator maximum
temperature limit, the minimum burner run time is stopped and the burner is
switched off in advance.
Function The control unit offers independently adjustable switching differentials with reference
to the same nominal value.
Switching differential I Switching differential I controls the heat generator capacity required according to
load and demand by switching on and off the stage required for the actual heat
demand within the set range. The switching is initiated symmetrically to the nominal
value within half of the absolute value of the switching differential.
Switching differential II Switching differential II (only two-stage heat generator and heat generator 2 x single-
stage) determines how many stages are required to meet the actual heat demand
(partial load - stage I, full load - stage II). This switching differential is overlaid
symmetrically on switching differential I and must always be set to higher values.
NOTE In Cascade mode this setting would be superseded by the cascade setting and is
therefore not available.

Time delay stage II Enabling of stage II (full load) is controlled not only by the switching differentials but
also by a time delay. In this way stage II remains disabled for the set delay so that
stage I will be active for longer. This function is only effective during the start-up
phase (when there is demand for both stages). When stage I is in base-load
operation and stage II in adjustment operation (covering excess heat demand), the
latter is switched on immediately when the demand arises.
NOTE In Cascade mode, this setting would be superseded by the cascade setting and is
therefore not available.
Enabling mode stage II The parameter “Enabling mode stage II” allows changing the effect of a Time delay
stage II setting during the start-up phase below the heat generator minimum
temperature limit.
NOTE In Cascade mode, this setting would be superseded by the cascade setting and is
therefore not available.
DHW loading mode stage II The function DHW LOADING MODE STAGE 1-2 allows defining the loading mode
for the hot-water heater with 2-stage or 2 x single-stage heat generators. The
following options are available:
• 2-stage loading with delayed enabling of stage II acc. to Time delay stage II
• Unlimited 2-stage DHW loading
• DHW loading with stage I only; stage II disabled
NOTE In Cascade mode, this setting would be superseded by the cascade setting and is
therefore not available.
Outside temperature disable When the actual outdoors temperature exceeds the set limit, all request to the heat
generator are disabled within a device. The heating circuits continue operating, but
the heat generator will not be switched on. Preset minimum burner running times are
fulfilled. Only when the outside temperature drops to the AT-disable level minus 2K,
the heat generator is enabled again. If several heat generators are controlled though
one device (condensing burners, 2-stage burners), all stages of the device will be
disabled.
Base load offset This setting becomes effective only if several heat generators are operated in
cascade mode.
Burner stages operating as base load are given a higher nominal temperature than
the modulating stage, which is switched on last. This higher value is composed of
the set nominal temperature plus the set base load offset. If several heat generators
are switched though one control, the setting applies to every heat generator.
Heat generator reset With 2-stage heat generators, the counters for operating hours and burner starts
(see Info menu, page 49) Can be reset separately for stage 1 (ST-1) and stage 2
(ST-2).

Reset
With the reset indicator flashing (RUECKSETZEN), the reset-ready indicator ( )
will flash when the rotary-push button is pressed briefly. A reset will be performed
when the rotary-push button is pressed for approx. 5 seconds.
Once the parameter settings have been reset, the device will jump back to the first
parameter on menu level WAERMEERZ.
Switching differential In contrast to conventional ON/OFF burner control systems with their switching
differentials symmetrical around the respective nominal temperature, the switching
differential for modulating burners is an asymmetric interval with the switch-on level
always 1K below the nominal temperature. This offers the advantage that, in case of a
possible overshoot through the P-band, the burner is not switched off, because the
switch-off point lies above the nominal value by a wider margin than the switch-on
point is below the nominal value (overshoot reserve). Also, when the heat demand is
low (especially in the low-load regime) the temperature will drop only slightly since the
burner is switched on again as soon as there is a deviation of more than 1 K.
Example:
Set nominal temperature = 50 K
Switching differential = 6 K
Switch-on at (50°C - 1K) = 49 °C
Switch-off at (49°C + 6K) = 55°C
Deviation (K)
Switch-off level
Nominal level
Switch-on level
Activation of modulation The modulating burner stage is activated when the heat generator temperature has
dropped below the set nominal temperature by more than 1K. The burner is enabled
through the burner relay. As soon as the heat generator temperature crosses the
switch-off level the burner is deactivated. In contrast to the mixer parameters.
Adjustment Adjustment to the nominal temperature is realized through the conventional 2-point
output (activating the burner) and an additional 3-point output for modulating the
actuator in the burner. The temperature is registered by the heat generator sensor.
In contrast to mixer control, no end position function is assigned to this actuator. The
control mechanism is running continuously.
Minimum burner run time Independent of temperature-related switch-off conditions, the burner is kept running
for the duration of the set minimum burner run time.
75 EN2H-0221GE51 R1105
Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
Minimum and maximum The same functions as for conventional heat generators apply when the heat
generator maximum temperature is exceeded or the heat generator minimum
temperature limitation temperature is undershot.
Example
At a maximum heat generator temperature of 70°C, the actuator in the modulating
must cover a temperature difference of 50K (based on a room temperature of 20°C).
This corresponds to a temperature deviation of 100 %, meaning that the setting is
calculated as follows:

high temperatures a PT 1000 sensor is used for this purpose. The control device
automatically evaluates the sensor data, which are different from the data supplied
by the standard sensors.
NOTE When a sensor fault is detected with the fuel gas sensor active, and if flue gas

Info messages With the message “VORLAUF“, the symbol “WW“ for hot-water pre-mixing is
displayed to the lower left.
Explanation When the hot-water pre-control is active, the respective mixing circuit cannot be
used as a heating circuit anymore.
When the hot-water pre-control is active, the request for hot-water filling is not sent
directly to the energy management unit (and from there to the district heating valve),
but instead to the hot-water pre-control.
The hot-water pre-control forwards the nominal value, taking into account the
parameter-defined offset (PARAMETER 14 / mixing tree), to energy management
and adjusts to the nominal value, which was received from hot-water filling, at the
mixer actuator.
Any parameter-defined return flow limiter sensor (setting 7/8 at the variable input)
acts according to its defined function on the actuator of the hot-water pre-control.
The switching behavior of the SFP is described under a separate request.
The hot-water pre-control must be activated in the same control device as the
associated hot-water filling unit.
The MC minimum and maximum limits are not adjustable and not effective.
The run-down time of the MCP runs parallel with the SFP run-down time
The boiler parallel shift of the SFP (parameter) acts on the MC request.
The boiler parallel shift of MC acts on the heat generator, provided the SFP
operating mode has not been set to “external storage tank”.
The optional return flow limitation acts on the flow mixture according to the setting.
The hot-water pre-control acts on only a hot-water filling configured in the same
device.

Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
For function with pre-mixer, parameter 08 is always adjustable. In this, the “OFF”
and “ON” settings have a different effect, which is described in the following.
Function With the setting “OFF”, there will be no start-up protection through the hot-water pre-
control. The SFP is switched on without any delay.
With the setting “ON”, the SFP is switched on only when the flow sensor detects that
the HW nominal temperature + ½ switching difference hot water (without offset) is
reached.
Key:
HWPCact =Actual temperature at flow sensor hot-water pre-control
HWnom =Hot-water nominal temperature
P09( HW ) =Value of hot-water parameter 09 (HW filling temperature offset)
SDHW =Switching difference hot water)
Both pumps (SFP and HWPC) switch off after completion of a tank filling, taking into
account their run-down times. If they are to switch off simultaneously, identical run-
down times must be selected for them.

Function Function as for hot-water priority operation (setting 2), with the difference that hybrid
heating circuits (mixing circuit control, constant control, fixed-value control) can still
adjust to their nominal value. During an active hot-water filling, the heating circuits do
post a nominal value to energy management. Mixing circuits must operate at the
temperature required by the hot-water request. Direct heating circuits remain
switched off.
A hot-water filling with priority operation in the system has priority. The mixer must
shut in this case.

7.2.12 Heat meter for additional limitation according to the volume flow or thermal output
(district heating)
This function is only active if a heat meter is present in the system. The signals
provided by the heat meter – pulses per unit of volume or pulses per unit of thermal
output – are used for the limitation function. Calibration of the thermal output and the
volume flow under parameters 12 und 13 allows calculating the entities thermal
output and volume flow. The values of these two entities are displayed when key ¤
is pressed. Nominal limits for thermal output and volume flow are entered under
parameters 14 und 15.
This limitation function operates as PI controller above the nominal value, using the
same parameters as the temperature control function.
The values are independent of the outside temperature. The heat flow is derived
from a volume signal in the following way:
The pulses representing the thermal output are counted, e.g. 5 pulses in one minute.
With the calibration parameters the actual thermal out, in kW, is calculated.
At an input of 60 pulses/min
NOTE This function is only active if the CHARGING PUMP function was assigned to one of
the outputs "Direct circuit pump", "Variable Output 1"or "Variable Output 2" in the
"Hydraulics" menu.
Function A charging pump to supply remote parts of the heating system is active at every
heating or HW request to the heat generator. It can be connected, through variable
settings, at one of the variable outputs or at the direct circuit pump output.
Bus system A charging pump connected to the central device under address 10 will run as soon
as any request is present on the data bus (including all heating and hot-water circuits
within the control network).
A charging pump connected to an extension controller (address 20, 30,...50) runs
only on request from the heating circuit associated with the respective control
device.
:
Extended running time CHP To avoid a high-temperature safety switch-off of the heat generator, a charging
pump is switched off according to the set time delay when a request to the heat
generator is withdrawn.

Function The primary pump is the functional equivalent of a loading pump. It is only active
when heating requests to the heat generator are present. Hot-water requests are not
considered.
Bus system A primary pump connected to the central device under address 10 will run as soon
as any request is present on the data bus (including all heating and hot-water circuits
within the control network).
A primary pump connected to an extension controller (address 20, 30,...50) runs only
on request from the heating circuit associated with the respective control device.
Extended running time To avoid a high-temperature safety switch-off of the heat generator, the primary
primary pump pump is switched off according to the set time delay when a request to the heat
generator is withdrawn.
Function The output controls a boiler circuit pump (or butterfly valve), which is switched on in
parallel with the heat generator and is put out of operation with a time delay after
switching off the heat generators.
BCP2 For systems with two single boilers or a double boiler two boiler circuit pumps can be
connected. The second output controls the boiler circuit pump of the sequential
boiler.
BCP pre-run time The pre-run time determines the burner’s switch-on delay and hence the opening
time of the shut-off device (motorized valve) to assure trouble-free circulation within
the heat generator when the burner switches on.
The setting of a pre-run time is only relevant if a shut-off device (motorized valve) is
used instead of a boiler circuit pump. Actuators with a reversible motor must be
operated by means of a slave relay with double throw contact (separate control
phases Lopen/Lshut).
BCP switch off delay After the switch-off of the burner the boiler circuit pump is switched off with a time
delay according to the set time in orderto prevent a safety switch-off of the heat
generator at high temperatures.
The switch off delay depends on the type of heat generator to be used and is to be
adjusted accordingly.
87 EN2H-0221GE51 R1105
Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
Function Regardless of a request to the heat generator, the output programmed accordingly
(DK, VO-1, VO-2) is activated immediately when the burner relay is activated (no
pre-running time).
When the burner relay is deactivated the programmed output is switched off after a
delay time. The switch-off duration depends on the setting of parameter 14
(extended running time) in the Heat generator menu.
Note A parallel setting of boiler circuit pump and parallel heat generator enabling is
allowed.
The temporary interruption (Solar/Solid fuel) and the external heat generator disable
act on output PWF.
See also 5.6.1 Hydraulic Menu and 5.6.6 Heat Generator Menu
The parameter “Boiler return control” determines the lowest allowable return flow
temperature for systems with direct or indirect return control. When the heat
generator return temperature drops below the set limit, the respective return control
device is activated and raises the return temperature until the set temperature is
reached or exceeded.
EN2H-0221GE51 R1105 88
SDC / DHC 43 Hydraulic Components and their Functions
Function The simplest way of controlling the return flow temperature is by means of a bypass
pump. When the return temperature in the heat generator drops below the set boiler
return minimum temperature, flow mixing is initiated by switching on a bypass pump
parallel to the heat generator. As soon as the return temperature rises above the
boiler return minimum temperature plus the return switching differential, the bypass
pump will be deactivated after the set delay time (Extended running time bypass
pump). As the mixing itself is not controlled, the bypass cross sections must be
taken into account for the system layout.
As soon as the switch-off conditions are fulfilled, the bypass pump will be switched
off after a delay according to the actual setting.
NOTE To avoid intermittent operation of the bypass pump, the return sensor must always
be positioned downstream of the mixing point for this mode of return temperature
control.
In this mode of return control the programmed mixing circuit adjusts the return
temperature to the return temperature setpoint. The adjustment is independent of the
status of any start-up protection of the heat generator. The return sensor for this
function is connected at the sensor input of the respective mixing circuit (e.g. VF 1
for mixing circuit 1).
The mixing circuit operates like a boiler circuit pump without boiler start-up protection
for this purpose.
When this function is active, two values are calculated independently for regulating
each mixing circuit. The first value is the control variable for the flow setpoint of the
heating circuit; the second is the control variable for the return setpoint.
The control variable used for mixer control (mixer control variable) results from the
superimposition of both values. In this the adjustment of the return temperature is
treated with priority.
Indirect return control is only active with mixing circuits that are in heating operation
as well. It does not affect a heating circuit in reduced operation.
89 EN2H-0221GE51 R1105
Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
NOTE Indirect return control is only feasible for system without bypass pumps and without
controlled flow mixing.
EN2H-0221GE51 R1105 90
SDC / DHC 43 Hydraulic Components and their Functions
The slope of the heating characteristic describes the relation between the change in
the flow temperature and the change in the outside temperature. In case of large
heating surfaces (and therefore low flow temperatures) like floor heating systems the
heating characteristic curve is less steep compared to smaller heating surfaces (e. g.
radiators).
The setting value refers to the lowest outside temperature used for heat demand
calculation. This parameter is to be set by the technician and should not be altered
anymore.
The setting of the heating characteristic should be carried out only in small steps and
at adequately long intervals so that a stable condition can be noticed. It is
recommended to make any corrections in 0.1 – 0.2 steps after 1–2 days.
CAUTION In order to measure the room temperature the heating circuit of the most
occupied room is to be used.
Radiator thermostats are used together with correctly designed radiators to
control the external heat gain and should hence be almost completely open.
During the adjustment phase additional external heat sources like fireplaces,
majolica stoves, etc. should not be used. Furthermore, during the
measurement period excessive ventilation is to be avoided.

Recommended settings:
Floor heating: 0.3 ... 1.0
Radiator heating: 1.2 ... 2.0
Convector heating: 1.5 ... 2.0
NOTE! The heating characteristics are limited by the minimum and maximum temperature
limits. With activated limits the relevant flow temperature is controlled exclusively
according to the set limit values.
The first heating characteriszic displayed is always the direct heating circuit (HC). In
case of room units the assigned heating circuit will be the first. If other heating
circuits are existing, their slope values can be selected with the relevant access
authorization and modified if necessary.
Setting After pressing the £ key the direct heating circuit (HC) flashes with the current
setting.
Other heating circuits, if existing, can be selected with the rotary pushbutton and the
corresponding slope values can be modified if necessary.
To return to the basic display press the £ key twice or just wait for approx.
60 seconds for automatic return (see 5.1.2.7 "System Information).
RED (Reduced mode) The direct heating circuit’s heating circuit pump remains active during reduced mode
(see Switching Time Program). The flow temperature is determined by the relevant
reduced heating characteristic according to the decreased room setpoint. The set
minimum temperature will be maintained.
Application: Buildings with low insulation values and high heat losses.
ECO (Switch-off Mode) During reduced mode the direct heating circuit is completely switched off if the
outside temperature exceeds the set frost protection limit. The heat generator
minimum temperature limit is deactivated. The heating circuit pump is switched off
with a short delay in order to avoid a safety switch-off owing to the post heating of
the heat generator (extended pump running time).
If the outside temperature falls below the specified frost protection limit, the controller
switches from switch-off mode (ECO) to reduced mode (RED) and the heating circuit
temperature is adjusted according to the set reduced characteristic considering the
set heat generator minimum temperature settings.
CAUTION The mode set here applies also for the ASENT and CONSTANT REDUCED
operating modes.

screed on floor heating systems. The process is based on recommendations of the
German Bundesverbandes Flächenheizungen (Federal Association for Surface
Heating) concerning the heating of fresh floor covers (heating according to a
mandatory temperature profile).
This is a special function that will not be interrupted by any other operating mode
(including manual operation or emission measurement)!
The screed function can be activated for mixer circuits and, in special cases (e.g. in
conjunction with a condensing boiler) also for a direct heating circuit.
When the screed function is active, all weather-dependent control functions of the
heating circuit concerned are switched off. The respective heating circuit operates
independent of the operating mode (switching times) as a constant temperature
controller.
An active screed function can be deactivated at any time (parameter setting Screed
function = OFF).

Room sensor active for room influence and connected outside sensor:
• With the room sensor switched on, the heating circuit is controlled in weather-
responsive mode taking into account the actual room temperature. The room
temperature deviation is taken account of according to the “Room factor”
parameter setting.
• If an SDW 20 room device is connected, the actual room temperature is indicated
in the basic display instead of the heat generator temperature.
• When the actual room temperature drops below the present nominal room
temperature + 1K, any active summer switch-off is disabled, provided Automatic
operation was not selected.
Application Public buildings (government, schools, public facilities, etc.) where only the
registration of the room temperature is required.
Application All system layouts that exclude room influence while the display of the actual room
temperature is still required (in contrast to setting OFF).

Hydraulic Components and their Functions SDC / DHC 43
If there is no difference between the desired (TARGET) and the current (ACTUAL)
room temperature, the direct heating circuit’s flow temperature is controlled
according to the set heating characteristic .
If there is a difference between the room temperature and the setpoint, the heating
characteristic is shifted parallel to the room temperature axis so that the deviation is
compensated. The amount of the displacement depends on the setting of the room
factor.
High settings lead to a quicker adjustment of the control deviation, while they reduce
the stability of the control circuit and can lead with excessively high setpoints to the
oscillating of the control value (= room temperature).
At this setting the control of the respective heating circuit is completely room-guided.
Weather-dependence is inactive. However, the parameters for weather response
(heating characteristic curve settings) can still be entered.
The value found through adaptation is not stored. The larger the deviations, the
larger the correction steps; the smaller the deviations, the smaller the corrections.
The heating curve is newly adapted whenever the heating curve slope parameter
setting is changed at a later stage.
EN2H-0221GE51 R1105 98

Adaptation is a useful tool for determining the correct building characteristic curve.
We recommend switching off this parameter once the adaptation is complete, and to
set manually, in the user menu, the slope value found though adaptation.
The switch-on times saved in the switching time programs for the relevant heating
circuit do not refer any longer to the heating start time but to the occupancy start
time (i.e. the time when the desired room temperature is reached).

For room controller operation, the advance time is determined by adaptation. For this
function, a room station SDW 20 must be connected and its parameter set
appropriately in the heating circuit menu (parameter 4 = RC). The function will not be
effective in conjunction with room device SDW 10.
Function With optimization switched off, a certain time passes at the transition between
reduced operation to heating operation until the room temperature reaches the
nominal daytime temperature (daytime setpoint).
This time is measured to determine an advance factor, which defines how much time
per kelvin of temperature rise the heat-up process takes. The advance factor is
computed from the time measured for the last x heat-up cycles, with x acting as a
damping factor.
The maximum advance time is derived from the parameter setting for switch-on
optimization (direct circuit or mixer 1 or 2 parameters 06).
A sliding setpoint adaptation starting from the advance time is not performed as the
entire control algorithm is designed for sharp setpoint steps.
The heating limit parameter can be activated separately for each heating circuit.
Example:
Room setpoint = 22 °C, heating limit setting = 2 K
Switch-off at flow setpoint 24 °C (22°C + 2K)
Switch-on at flow setpoint 26°C (22°C + 2K + 2K)
Boundary conditions The SUMMER SWITCH-OFF function (menu SYSTEM - parameter 04) has priority
over the HEATING LIMIT function.
The FROST PROTECTION function (menu SYSTEM - parameter 05) has priority
over the HEATING LIMIT function.
In connection with a room unit the heating circuit is controlled according to the room
frost protection temperature.
Without a room unit the setting serves a default value for the reduced room
temperature and is controlled on the basis of the latter.(parameter 08)
NOTE! With lasting frost protection mode and sensitive objects in the house like antiques,
plants, etc. the setting value is to be duly adjusted.
Example:
Daytime room temperature setpoint = 22 °C
Thermostat function setting = 4 K
Interruption of heating operation: TRoom > (22 °C + 4 K) > 26.0 °C
Resumption of heating operation: TRoom < (26 °C – 0.5 K) < 25.5 °C
NOTE The thermostat function is effective in Heating mode and in Reduced mode.
With some applications too high return temperatures may cause technical problems
(district heating, condensating boilers) These can occur if heating system does not
need the heat energy (e.g. radiator valves closed).
If the return temperature exceeds the maximum value, the controller will change
from flow control to return control and thus prevent too high return temperatures.
The proportional band Xp defines how a step change of the setpoint effects a
change of the corresponding actuator according to the new setpoint.
Example:
Consider an actuator moving though an angle of 90° in an action time of two
minutes. When a sudden flow temperature control deviation of 10 K occurs (e.g.
when the system switches from reduced to daytime operation) and the P-band
setting is 5%/K, the actuator has to open by 50 % (= 5%/K x 10K). Consequently, the
duration of the actuation pulse is one minute (= 50 % of the actuator action time).
The integral part (= adjustment time) determines the dynamic behavior of the
controller and thus the time required by the controller to adjust for the actual control
deviation. The integral action time is independent of the amount of deviation.
Example:
With a sudden flow temperature control deviation of 10 K (e.g. when the system
switches from reduced to daytime operation) and a Tn setting of 7 minutes, the
controller will adjust for the new (10 K higher) flow temperature after the set time.
NOTE The adjustment time can be determined through the Ziegler-Nichols method: The
mixer is closed, initially, and the heat generator is taken to the maximum
temperature for the heating circuit concerned. As soon as half of all consumers at
the circuit to be measured have been opened, the mixer is fully opened from cold
condition (= room temperature) by means of the Relay Test function. The
characteristic heat-up curve, i.e. the temperature development over time following
this action, shows an inflection point. The crossing of the tangent through that point
and the time axis is the delay time. This value multiplied by the factor 3.3 is the
optimum integral action time for this heating circuit.
Inflection point
Delay time Tv
Recommended basic setting for integral action time for different heating systems:
Application Tn
Floor heating and other static heating surfaces 10 - 30 min
Radiator heating 6 -10 min
Convector heating 3 - 6 min
The sample time is a controller-internal quantity which defines the time interval
between two subsequent actuator pulses in the presence of a control deviation.
Shorter sample times allow finer adjustments.
This function allows adjusting the actuator, with regard to its finite running time, to
the control characteristics, meaning that actuators with different running times (e.g. 1
min, 2 min, 4 min) react to the same deviation by readjusting by the same amount
through adapting the action times. The integral action time Tn remains unchanged in
this. However, care must be taken that the latter must always exceed the running
time of the respective actuator.

DHW Day The DHW (Domestic Hot Water-) daytime temperature is set with a key on the user
interface. The DHW daytime temperature provides for the desired hot water
temperature during DHW operating times in the automatic program and during the
PARTY and HEATING operating modes.
This setting is the initial value for the nominal temperatures that can be set for each
heating cycle in the switching-time programs. The temperature settings in the
switching time programs are automatically adjusted when the HW daytime
temperature is changed.
Example Before
Temperature setting hot water daytime temperature: 50 °C
After
Temperature setting hot water daytime temperature: 52 °C
Changed settings are stored when key § or î is briefly pressed again or after
automatic return at a preset time. Once the settings are stored, the unit automatically
switches to Basic display.
WW Night Hot water economy temperature is the setpoint for the DHW tank between the active
operating mode times in automatic mode.
Legionella Protection In order to kill Legionella germs in the tank, a Legionella protection function can be
activated. To activate, use parameter 02 in the Domestic Hot Water Parameter Menu
(DHW).
In order to completely kill all germs, the Legionella protection temperature should be
set at least at 50 °C.
The setting is carried out with two parameters. The weekday for Legionella
protection can be selected by the end user with a freely accessible parameter
(parameter 02). With parameters 03 and 04 the time and temperature can be set by
the heating technician.
Usually an electronic temperature probe (immersion sensor in the hot water tank) is
used for this purpose, utilizing the temperature-dependent electric resistance of the
probe.
NOTE With hot water control through a thermostat the actual hot water temperature cannot
be measured and registered and will therefore not be displayed as part of the system
information. Also, the hot water nominal temperatures cannot be set.
Maximum Temperature This function limits the temperature in the DHW tank according to the
aforementioned set value (parameter06). The desired water heater daytime
temperature to be set at the user level is limited by this parameter.
NOTE! If a DHW thermostat is used to determine the water heater temperature (see
Parameter 05), this function is not active.
CAUTION Hot water maximum temperature limitation is function protecting the tank and
terminates hot water loading into the tank. The tank loading pump is switched
off immediately when the maximum temperature is exceeded. In this case it
cannot be ensured that the set extended running time is adhered to.
Parallel Mode
During tank loading the heating circuits remain operative.
Priority Mode
During tank loading the heating circuits are put out of function. They are restarted as
soon as the DHW loading pump extended running time is over.
If the DHW setpoint is not reached after 4 hours, an alarm is indicated on the display
Conditional Priority
During tank loading the heating circuits remain blocked until the temperature in the
heat generator reaches the current DHW target value minus half the burner
switching differential.
The heating circuits will be enabled according to the following criteria:
NOTE! In this operating mode the loading temperature increase for the tank is to be
selected so that the heat generator does not switch off before the heating circuits are
enabled. A parallel shift of at least 10K should be set so that this function can
operate correctly.
The heating circuit pump is connected at output DKP and the three-way valve to
output SLP in this case.
External operation (Request does not act on heating generator and heating
circuit)
In external operation hot-water loading is switched only according to the set
switching differentials. There is neither a heat request to the heat generator nor tank
priority operation to the heating circuits. The parameters Boiler parallel shift, Tank
Discharge Protection, Pump Extended Running Time and Boiler Start-up Protection
do not act on the HW loading pump.
This measure prevents any rear tank discharge through the heat generator. The HW
loading pump is disabled again as soon as the temperature difference between the
heat generator and the HW tank has dropped to less than 2 K.
NOTE! The heat generator minimum temperature limit operates continuously to protect the
heat generator and blocks the DHW loading pump in case of temperatures below the
set value.
CAUTION In case of DHW temperature settings above 60°C this function should not be
activated to avoid safety switch-off (in particular for heat generators with a low
water capacity).
Tank Discharge Protection must be set accordingly for HW loading from buffer
tanks.
Boiler Temperature
parallel shift: This function determines the default setting of the tank loading temperature
compared to the set DHW setpoint. In case of setpoint modifications the heating
energy needed for the DHW supply is adjusted.
In case of several controllers connected via bus and several DHW circuits the tank
loading temperature depends on the highest setpoint if several tanks are loaded
simultaneously.
Switching differential This function determines the size of the DHW switching differential. The switching
differential affects the relevant DHW setpoint symmetrically.
Loading enabling The current DHW temperature is lower than the DHW setpoint by half the amount of
the DHW switching differential.
Loading abort The current DHW temperature exceeds the DHW setpoint by half the amount of the
DHW switching differential.
Extended Pump
running time After switching-off the heat generator the tank loading pump is stopped only after a
time delay to prevent a safety switch-off in case of high temperatures. The setting
can be adjusted to the capacity of the DHW tank.
NOTE! Excessively long overtravel times interrupt unnecessarily the heating mode and
increase the temperature in the hot water tank.
Tank sensor 2 For complete loading of a hot-water tank by means of automatic measuring point
changeover between tank sensors 1 and 2 (layer loading). The measured value of
the hotter sensor (SF1 or SF2) is evaluated for the activation of the loading pump.
Termination of the loading is carried out on the basis of the measured value of the
colder sensor. The set values for the hot-water setpoint temperature and the
specified hot-water switching difference continue to apply.
Economy Interval (Pulse) The use of the economy interval minimizes the usual circulation losses owing to
adjustable switch-on intervals during operating and determines the run time of the
DHW circulation pump within an adjustable period (economy interval).
Economy Interval
(Period duration) This parameter determines the length of the period and hence the duration of the
pause in a circulation pump pulse operating mode.
Economy interval Pause = Economy interval Period duration – Economy interval Pulse –
Switching Times In this function a DHW circulation pump can be coupled to an existing automatic
program of a control circuit with regard to the switch-on and switch-off times. The
DHW circulation pump is in function during the heating or DHW cycles of the
selected circuit and program.
NOTE If operation of the time programs P2 and P3 were not enabled (see parameter
ZEITPROGRAMM on parameter level SYSTEM) and the circulation pump is
assigned to one of these programs, the pump will operate according to the stored
standard times. The same applies if a switching-time program was selected that
does not exist for the controller in use (e.g. a MK 2 for SDC 9-21).
Circulation pump HW parameter 16 allows switching off the circulation pump during HW loading.
with district heating
Function The function controls indirectly (via circuit breaker) an electrical water heater if the
automatic summer switch-off is active.
An external DHW thermostat including the necessary safety installation will take care
of the switch off function.
Function The solar function makes it possible to combine solar panels with heating and DHW
systems in order to support the economy of the system. The Solar loading pump can
be controlled according to various conditions.
NOTE! This function is only active if a variable output is assigned to a solar loading pump.
For heat metering a variable input (VI1..VI3) can be assigned for the solar panel
return sensor SPRS.
If the solar panel flow sensor is defect, the loading pump wiil be switched off for
safety reasons.
Switch on differential With sufficient solar heat energy the temperature difference between panel flow and
solar buffer tank will become bigger than the adjusted value and the solar panel
pump is switched on to load the buffer tank. The minimum value is 3K above the
switch off differential.
Switch off differential If the temperature difference between panel flow and buffer tank falls below this
adjusted differential, the pump will be switched off and the loading terminated. The
maximum value is always 3K below the switch on differential.
Minimum running time The solar pump remains running for this adjusted time. The minimum running time
has priority over the switch off differential.
Solar panel
maximum limit This limit serves for the thermical protection of the solar panel/s. It activates the
panel pump if the adjusted temperature is exceeded. If the panel temperature falls
below the adjusted value again, then all solar functions and settings will be active
again.
Buffer maximum limit If the temperature in the buffer tank exceeds this limit, then even the solar panel
maximum limit function will be deactivated so that the pump switches off. This
function can be activated again as soon as the buffer tank temperature falls more
than 10K below its maximum limit.
Heat generator Heat generator temporary interruption (only with solar operating mode = priority
temporary interruption mode)
The temporary interruption serves to prevent frequent switching between solar
loading and loading by the heat generator. After a solar pump switch-off the set time
has to pass before the solar buffer tank can be loaded again by the heat generator
(boiler).
Switchover Parallel Solar priority / parallel switchover (only with solar operating mode = priority mode)
When the temperature in the solar tank drops below the nominal value by this
temperature setting during priority solar loading, the system is automatically witched
to parallel operation (Temporary interruption disabled, heat generator enabled).
Priority mode is activated again as soon as the tank temperature rises above the
actual setpoint plus the HW switching differential.
Heat balance Heat balancing is activated through this parameter setting. The user can select
between flow calculation via the pump running time and determination of the flow
volume via the pulse signal input of the device, if such input is available. Any
commercial flow meter can be connected to the pulse input.
This parameter defines the fluid density according to the manufacturers data.
Fluid heat capacity This parameter defines the specific heat capacity for the correct calculation of the
heat balance. The data is supplied by the fluid manufacturer.
NOTE! The physical data Volume flow, density, and specific heat form the basis for the heat
output calculation.
W = (V / t) · ρ · cW · ∆δ · tSOP
W = Heat capacity
V/t = Volume flow of the heat carrier medium
ρ = Density of the heat carrier medium
cW = Specific heat capacity of the heat carrier medium
∆δ = Temperature difference (solar panel feed / return flow)
Anti blocking function This is an automatic function of the controller. If the solar loading pump was
switched off for longer than 24 hours, then it will be started for 20 seconds in order to
prevent blocking through corrosion.
NOTE This function is only active if a buffer loading pump is assigned to a programmable
switching output or if a buffer tank sensor is connected to a variable input.
For stratified discharge, an optional second buffer tank sensor (PF 2) can be
connected at a variable input (VI1 to VI3).
Function Buffer or energy tanks are used for storing energy that is available without control
(e.g. from solar equipment or wood boilers). This energy buffer covers he energy
demand from heating circuits and HW systems.
The buffer loading pump function ensures that a controlled heat generator supplies
the additional energy to the buffer tank or the heating and hot-water circuits,
respectively.
If no controlled heat generator is used (e.g. heating by wood boilers only), buffer
functions such as forced dissipation into the heating circuits can be used by
connecting and activating buffer tank sensor 1 at a variable input.
Operating modes To support the full range of available combination options in multivalent heating
systems with buffer support, the control system offers the possibility to set various
operating modes for buffer operation. The different settings cause different
processing sequences of heat requests for heating circuits and hot water. In the

When the buffer tank can cover the energy demand, the heat generator nominal
temperature is maintained by the buffer, via BULP (PLP), instead of the burner.
In this way the heat generator always operates at its nominal temperature and can
not be exposed to excessive buffer temperatures.
Loading control
The supply of energy from a controlled heat generator to the heating circuits is
realized through loading the buffer tank. The buffer control ensures that the buffer is
supplied with sufficient energy from the heat generator, via the buffer loading pump.
Discharge control 1
The heating circuits are supplied with energy either from the buffer through
discharging the buffer tank via BULP, provided the buffer tank contains sufficient
energy, or through direct supply from the heat generator.
NOTE If a heat generator disable is active (e.g. through external burner disabling via
contact, temporary interruption (solid fuel/solar)), the energy contained in the buffer,
independent of the actual buffer level, is dissipated into the heating circuits by
enabling the buffer discharge channel (e.g. switching on the buffer loading pump or
switching over the BULP diverter valve). The buffer minimum temperature is
monitored. DHW loading is enabled under the conditions of buffer/tank discharge
protection.
Discharge control 2
The heating circuits are always supplied with energy from the heat generator. As
long as the buffer contains sufficient energy, the heat generator will be heated via
the buffer loading pump instead of the burner. If the energy in the buffer is not
sufficient, the burner will be started.
NOTE If a heat generator disable is active (e.g. through external burner disabling via
contact, temporary interruption (solid fuel/solar)), this will only result in the
suppression of the request to the burner.
Buffer nominal temperature The buffer nominal temperature is the temperature that the buffer tank has to provide
for supplying the connected heating circuits. It corresponds to the highest demand
value of the respective heating circuits.
Example:
Demand value MC-1 = 45 °C
Demand value MC-2 = 55 °C
Demand value DHW = 65 °C
Any required temperature offset (e.g. hot-water parallel shift during loading) is
already taken into account in the demand values of the heating circuits.
Buffer minimum temperature When there is a heat request to the buffer tank from the heating circuits or from DHW
limit this request will be maintained at least to the minimum temperature limit. When the
temperature drops below this limit, the buffer tank is recharged by the heat generator
under the conditions of the buffer start-up protection.
Buffer maximum- Buffer temperatures above the set buffer maximum temperature limit will trigger
temperature limit a forced switch-off
Of the buffer loading pump. The excess heat is dissipated into the selected circuits
(see Forced dissipation). Forced dissipation is disabled and buffer operation is
resumed when the temperature in the buffer tank drops below 2 K under the set
maximum temperature limit.
Buffer temperature to ensure an adequate control reserve for all consumers connected to the buffer
offset heat generator tank, the demand value sent to the heat generator can be raised by an additional
temperature offset.
Buffer switching differential When the buffer tank temperature rises above the actual demand value by the set
differential, the buffer loading pump will be switched off. The pump is switched on
again as soon as the buffer tank temperature drops below the actual demand value.
Buffer forced dissipation When the set buffer maximum temperature limit is exceeded, the excess energy can
be dissipated into the heating circuits and the hot-water tank. The heating circuits
into which the forced dissipation is routed are determined by the respective
parameter.
CAUTION Thermal mixer valve at water heater outlet obligatory because of scalding
hazard.
CAUTION For floor heating a contact thermostat must be installed to control forced
switch-off of the pumps.
Buffer skimming function Whenever the buffer tank is not being loaded by the heat generator (buffer setpoint
reached) the difference between the heat generator temperature and the buffer tank
temperature is measured continuously (BS). The buffer loading pump is switched on
as soon as the temperature difference rises above the set extended-running switch-
on differential. The buffer loading pump is switched off immediately when the
temperature difference drops to the extended-running switch-off differential.
This skimming function ensures that excess energy in the heat generator (e.g. due to
extended heating) will not be lost.
Buffer start-up protection In buffer operation there is no start-up protection for the heat generator acting on the
heating circuits. The start-up protection only acts on the buffer loading pump. When
buffer start-up protection is switched on and the buffer tank temperature drops below
the minimum temperature limit, all consumer circuits (HC, DHW) are separated
hydraulically (Pumps are switched off). The buffer start-up protection is disabled
(pumps are switched on again) when the buffer tank temperature exceeds the buffer
minimum temperature plus half of he buffer switching differential. All consumer
circuits remain in operation when buffer start-up protection is switched off.
Buffer discharge protection Buffer discharge protection disables the buffer loading pump until the heat generator
temperature has risen to more than 5 K above the buffer nominal temperature.
This function helps preventing rear buffer discharge though the heat generator. The
buffer loading pump is disabled again when the temperature difference between the
heat generator and the buffer tank is less than 2 K.
A forced switch-on will be initiated for the solid fuel loading pump if a solid-fuel boiler
sensor is defective.
Function The solid-fuel function allows integrating solid-fuel boilers (usually in combination
with a buffer tank) into the system to support the heating. Under this function the
solid fuel loading pump can be controlled through various switching conditions as
described in the following.
Solid fuel boiler low limit If the temperature of the solid fuel boiler is 10 K higher than the low limit, the solid
fuel loading pump will be switched on, if it falls below the low limit, it will be switched
off.
Solid fuel boiler high limit If the temperature of the solid fuel boiler is higher than the high limit, the solid fuel
loading pump will be forced to switch on. The excess heat will then be dissipated into
the selected (see menue buffer tank)circuits. This forced operation will be finished
and the temperature difference control enabled when the solid fuel boiler
temperature falls more than 10K below the high limit.

The temperature of the solid-fuel boiler lies at least 10 K over the minimum
temperature limitation.
difference for switch off If the temperature difference is lower than the switch off difference, the loading
process will be terminated and the pump will be switched off. The maximum setting
value constantly lies 3 K under the selected activation difference in order to prevent
rear discharging of the buffer tank.
Description To ensure that the solar collector in priority operation (temperature measurement
through SPFS, usually HW tank) can be loaded, checks are performed at regular
intervals whether sufficient solar power is available (meaning the solar panel
temperature is sufficiently high for loading and the set switchover temperature can
be reached).
Switchover This function allows switching a diverter valve according to the load condition of two
heat storage tanks (2-point output) so that solar energy can be used to support the
heating system during periods of low solar intake.
Measuring cycle If the switchover condition is not fulfilled after a preset time interval of 30 minutes
(meaning the temperature in the first-priority tank remains below the set switchover
temperature) und if the loading conditions for the second-priority tank (temperature
measurement through SBUS, usually buffer tank for heating support) are fulfilled, the
solar loading pump (SOP) is temporarily switched off after the time set on Solar level
(parameter 15). During the inactive time of the pump the difference between the
solar panel flow sensor (SPFS) and the sensor for solar switchover (SLVS) is
determined. If the switch-on condition is fulfilled, the first-priority tank is loaded. If the
loading condition is not fulfilled after the set time, loading is continued into the lower-
priority tank as long as the loading conditions are not fulfilled.
These cyclic checks are suspended if the temperature at sensor SLVS plus the
switch-on differential becomes greater or equal the set final switch-off temperature.
The Solar forced heat dissipation output is energized under the following conditions:
• Function enabled for solar tank temperatures in excess of the maximum
temperature.
• When the solar panel temperature rises above the set solar panel maximum
temperature the output is switched on while the solar loading pump continues
running.
• When the solar panel temperature rises above the set final switch-off temperature
the SFD output and the solar loading pump are switched off.
Operation This function can be selected only if an SOP has been set.
CAUTION When this function is active the solar loading pump continues running even
when the solar panel temperature exceeds the set solar panel maximum
temperature.

Function Using a 3-way switching valve, hydraulic buffer relief (HBR) causes temporary intake
into the upper region of the buffer tank, if that region has not reached its nominal
temperature yet, so that connected heating or hot water circuits receive priority
supply of energy.
When the buffer temperature exceeds the buffer setpoint by 2.5 K, the 3-way
switching valve is hydraulically coupled to the lower region of the buffer tank so that
the entire buffer tank can be loaded. Another switchover to the upper region of the
buffer tank is initiated as soon as the buffer temperature drops below 2.5 K under the
buffer nominal temperature.
Application Partial buffer loading with priority supply for heating and hot water for all types of
loading control modes (see buffer operating modes 1, 2 and 5)
Hydraulic function When the output is inactive (de-energized), the buffer is fully loaded (valve position
A–AB, relief deactivated).
When the output is active (live), only the upper part of the buffer tank is loaded
(valve position B–AB, relief activated).
Function If the function is active, malfunction messages of any kind can operate this input .
(closed contact= malfunction) and serve as a global malfunction message input.
These messages will also be available on the bus system.
Function The function becomes active on detection of malfunction messages of any kind. It
serves as a global malfunction message output for connecting optical or acoustic
alarm signal devices.
7.3.10.3 Timer
NOTE Only active if parameter 05 (Output pump direct heating circuit) in the “Hydraulics”
parameter menu was set to 14.
Function The function can switch any device according to the current switching time program
of the direct heating circuit.
This configuration allows switching between operating modes through the telephone,
via a switching modem to be provided by the user (for holiday homes, etc.).
Assignment A switching modem can be assigned to each of the three variable inputs (VI1...VI3).
If a variable input was assigned to this function the corresponding parameter for
allocating the switching modem to the respective heating circuit (same allocation
parameter and region as for Demand contact, meaning the modem acts either on the
direct heating circuit (DK), mixer circuit 1(MK-1), mixer circuit 2 (MK-2), Hot water circuit
(DHW), or on the entire system (ALL), i.e. on all controllers and central devices in the
data bus system.
The operating mode depends on the circuitry at the respective input, in the following
way:
NOTE Only one modem may be connected to one variable input (VI1, VI2 or VI3) of the
control device.
Function If a variable contact (see note) has been defined as a demand contact, the
corresponding parameter for allocating the contact to the respective heating circuit
(i.e. the heating circuit to be addressed by the demand contact) is displayed in the
“System” menu.
The range of setting includes all control circuits within a controller (DK, MK-1, MK-2,
WW, ALL) so that the demand contact can be allocated either to each individual
heating and hot water circuit or, if required, to all circuits.
CAUTION No multi-controller function for data bus systems with several central devices.
Operating modes and switching time settings are not effective when the demand
contact is active. The respective heating circuit only reacts to requests from the
demand contact.
The operating modes Manual, Emission measurement with STB check and Screed
function are of higher priority.
System information
An open demand contact is signaled by the string “Inhibit” in the Status display; a
closed contact is identified by the string “request”.
Contact function A variable input that has been defined as a demand contact acts on the heating
circuit in the following way:
CAUTION Customers must take appropriate frost protection measures for the respective
control circuit.
This function can be activated up to thee times (once for each available VI).
The following illustration shows the maximum possible extension of the bus system.
These controllers are identified by a corresponding bus address which provides for
selective communication between the base unit and the interactive subunits via the
bi-directional data bus. Each subunit itself can transmit the data of a maximum of 3
room units (wall units) via the assigned bus address shown in the blow table:
NOTE! Make sure that base unit controller is assigned address 10.
If the HG is working with boiler corrosion protection, then this status is sent to all
mixing circuits. These will then disable the circuits (valve close and pump off).
The HG in the ”base controller” sends its actual boiler data to each mixing circuit in
the system which can then activate an indirect return control.
Each controller can control a DHW loading. The priority status of each DHW loading
process is sent via bus to all mixing circuits within the system. E.g. If the loading is in
parallel mode, then all mixing circuits will stay in operation.
Each heating demand will be fulfilled by the ”base controller”. The highest demand
on the bus is used for the heat generator. Also a manual operation is regarded as
demand.
The actual time(from the ”base controller”) will be sysnchronized in the complete
system.
All wall units will send the assigned room temperature values to their heating circuits
Errors and status indications will be sent from the controllers to the wall modules for
display.

From software version 2.1 the SMILE gateway can be used. For this, all central
devices within the bus system must have installed software version 2.1 or later.
Connected room devices too should run a software version as recent as possible.
Use of versions earlier than 2.1 can lead to restricted functionality of the system.
7.3.11.2.9.1 Correction of the heat generator according to the total flow temperature
Total flow sensor The sensor connected at variable input VI-1(2,3) measures the total flow
temperature in thermohydraulic distributors or in the common flow.
The adjustment of the boiler temperature is controlled by the total flow sensor
instead of the boiler sensor while the boiler minimum and maximum temperatures of
the heat generator are still controlled by the boiler sensor.
Function A digital wall device SDW 20 can be connected to the control device.
With a digital wall device remote control for a central device (e.g. from a living room)
BUSADDRESS is possible in addition to the room temperature detection. Settings can be carried out
for all the existing heating circuits.
The bus address of the wall device is used to specify on which heating circuit the
11 room sensor (room influence) is to act.
æ ç è é ê ë ì í
When an SDW 20 is connected for the first time to the bus system, the address is
DATABUS selected for the heating circuit to which the SDW 20 is to be assigned (bus address).
After the input has been confirmed, a feedback is output to which heating circuit (DK,
MK-1, MK-2) and which central device (ZG) the digital wall device has been
MK-1 ZG-1 assigned.
CAUTION Duplicate assignments of bus addresses are not allowed and will lead to data
transmission errors and, consequently, to control malfunctions of the heating
system.
• Disconnect wall devices from the data bus line (disconnect plug connection at the
bottom of the device)
• Reconnect the wall device, holding the rotary-push button pressed down until the
address setting screen is displayed.
• Set and confirm the new bus address.
With an SDW 10 it is possible to detect the room temperature, to remotely adjust the
room setpoint temperature and to change the operating mode for a heating circuit
The settings only apply for the applicable heating circuit.
The bus address of the wall device is used to specify on which heating circuit the
room sensor and the adjustment of the operating mode are to act.
Setting the bus address The address of the SDW 10 is set by means of the rotating encoding switch in the
inside of the wall device in accordance with the subsequent table.
Operating mode
adjustment The desired operating mode is selected with the key (keep pressed approx.
2–3 seconds) and indicated by the corresponding LED. As the key is pressed, the
operating mode is adjusted in the following sequence:
After the operating mode has been adjusted, the new operating mode is transferred
to the central device. Only the operating mode of the heating circuit to which the
SDW 10 is assigned is adjusted.
Automatic mode The heating circuit is controlled constantly in accordance with the specification of the
automatic program P1 - P3 set in the central device plus or minus the room setpoint
correction at the rotary button.
Heating The heating circuit is controlled constantly in accordance with the desired daytime
room temperature plus or minus the room setpoint correction at the rotary button.
Reduced The heating circuit is controlled constantly in accordance with the desired reduced
room temperature plus or minus the room setpoint correction at the rotary button.
The function depends on the setting in the parameter selection for the heating circuit,
REDUCED OPERATING MODE parameter.
Room setpoint correction The rotary button can be used to modify the room temperature set at the central
device by ± 6 K referenced to the central position.
Operation indication The operation indication is realized by three LEDs. The possible states are listed in
the table below:
Definition:
Flashing 0.8 sec on and 0.8 sec off
NOTE! In all the other operating modes not defined in the table above all the LEDs are
activated.
Function This setting serves to determine the privilege status of a room station connected to a
heating circuit. One parameter per available heating circuit is available for this
setting.
NOTE Once a room device is connected and registered via the data bus to the central
device, the central device automatically switches to remote operating mode! This is
necessary to ensure clear operation of the system with connected room devices.
NOTE Cascade operation excludes 2-stage boiler control. All available stages are switched
by the cascade management. Consequently, the respective parameters of the Heat
generator selection level are not available for settings. All controls are governed by
cascade control.
Switch-on delay: The afterheating characteristics of the boilers must be taken into account when
rating the heating system. The cascade switch-on delay serves to adjust the system
to start-up delays of the individual boilers, i.e. when, after being enabled, the heat
generator delivers its energy into the system (start-up phase, run-in period). The
appropriate setting is the maximum delay time of the boilers in the system.
Switch-off delay: This parameter controls the run-down of the heat generators to avoid that all heat
generators switch off at the same time when the set cascade switching differential is
exceeded. The setting has to be adjusted to the afterheating characteristics of the
heat generators.
Stage swap: To ensure the balanced utilization of the heat generators within a cascade (cascade
stages), a running-time-dependent leading stage swap can be activated.
After the set operating time of the presently leading heat generator, the system
switches to the heat generator with the next higher bus address.
Stage swap can only be executed between several central devices. It cannot be
applied if several condensing boilers are switched by a single central device.
Leading stage: The leading cascade stage can still be set manually to any existing stage even when
automatic stage-sequence switching is disabled.
NOTE Changing the heat generator type within the central device under address 10 leads
to an automatic reset of the leading stage setting to the first heat generator.
Stagenumber = Stageselect
The actual boiler temperature BTact of the leading boiler or the total flow sensor
temperature FT has to have been below the boiler nominal temperature BTnom minus
half the switching differential SD for the time t, which has to be at least as long as
the calculated switch-on delay. Additionally, the requested stage number must have
been sent to central device10 as the active status response.
The stage number is decremented again as soon as the temperature of the leading
boiler or of the total flow sensor exceeds the present nominal boiler temperature plus
half of the switching differential for at least the calculated switch-off delay time.
Stagenumber = Stageselect
• The heat generator that was switched on last adjusts the system to the set
nominal temperature.
• All other heat generators operate at the set maximum temperature (base load).
• The boiler stage number can be reduced as soon as the adjusting stage has
withdrawn its request to the heat generator and the boiler temperature has risen
above the set nominal temperature plus the set switching differential.
• For each heat generator the displayed nominal temperature always is the
presently requested temperature to be adjusted to..
• A heat generator that is not available (malfunction, external inhibit or outside
temperature inhibit) is ignored within the stage sequence. The next available heat
generator will be switched on instead.
Manual operation The heating circuits of the control device in which manual operation was activated,
operate according to the HAND function. The set request value is forwarded to the
energy management module of cascade control, and adjusted to by the available
boiler stages.
Emission measurement This function works as described under “Emission measurement“, with the following
extensions:
• The effect on heating circuits is extended to all heating circuits of the system.
• Enabling of the heat generators (burner) is initiated at the same devices where
emission measurement was activated.
STB This function works as described under “STB check”, with the following extension:
As soon as an STB function is detected within the BUS system, all consumers
(heating circuits) are inhibited.
Emergency mode The parameters of cascade control are determined in the central device with the bus
address 10. If that controller becomes unavailable due to some defect, the remaining
stages continue operating in an emergency mode. In this mode all heat generators
adjust to the same boiler nominal temperature (parallel operation). As soon as the
cascade manager comes back into operation, cascade control is reactivated
automatically.
Data transmission To enable the cascade function to process fast switching events, the transmission of
he cascade data was given a higher priority. Consequently, the data transmission
from any device to the master device, and of the request values from the master to
the slaver devices, takes no longer than approx. 3 seconds.
Automatic call-up If the commissioning date has not yet been stored, connected or disconnected
sensors are registered automatically whenever the control device is switched on.
Error and fault messages of sensors (short-circuit interruption) are suppressed in this
period. After the commissioning date has been saved, a change in the sensor
configuration is only still possible after the manual Set function. The AUTO SET
function can be enabled at any time again for a day (day change) by the parameter.
Manual call-up Manual call-up of the AUTO SET function is always possible. The call-up is activated
by pressing the pressure rotary transducer during the version display until the AUTO
SET function is shown in the display. The basic display is activated after the function
has been carried out.
A change in the function assignment by the AUTO SET function is only carried out
depending on the following inputs and selected configuration:
The current setting values are checked beforehand so that the configuration carried
out is not maladjusted by the AUTO SET function. A change is only carried out if one
of the settings specified above is applicable. This ensures that the AUTO SET
function cannot, for example, ever log off a return increase at the MK2 or re-function
it into a mixer heating circuit.
In case of two stage heat generators both stages are operative (measurement with
standard heat output).
Function The heat generator is controlled to Heat generator maximum temperature. All
heating circuits as well as DHW adjust to their respective maximum temperature.
WARNING There is danger of scalding because the DHW temperatures may rise above
the DHW setpoint
Termination Emission measurement can be terminated in any moment in advance with the ¡
key.
Safety check (Safety temperature limiter check – to be performed only by the technician)
Function By keeping the rotary pushbutton pressed during an emission measurement the
integrated heat generator maximum temperature limit is bypassed, the heat
generator remains in function continuously until the triggering of the safety
LIMITER TEST temperature limiter (SLT).
During the SLT check all the loads are separated from the heat generator, i.e. any
available mixing valve is closed and all the heating and DHW loading pumps are put
out of function.
The emission measurement is continued from the moment of the termination with the
previously saved residual time.
Application SLT check by the heating technician
Termination Release the rotary pushbutton – the emission measurement still active is stopped
with the ¡ key.
After selecting the test function the relevant relays can be switched one after the
other by pressing the rotary pushbutton î in the specified switching sequence.

Sensor alarm messages Sensor values which are not in their respective measuring range will either be
sensor breaks or sensor short circuits. Depending on the type of sensor the
indication will be between 10 and 20 and the index 0 for short circuit or 1 for break.
HG alarm messages These messages depend on the actual switching conditions and the indication will
be between 30 and 40, index 0,1 or 2
Logical alarm messages These messages will react on the actual control result. They appear between 50 and
60 with Index 0,1 or 2
Logical alarm messages can be disabeled with a special parameter.
Bus alarm messages These messages display adress problems like double adresses, not recognizing
adresses, etc. They appear with code 70 and Index 0 or 1.

Malfunction message register The control device features a malfunction message register in which up to 5
malfunction messages can be saved. The messages are displayed with date, time
and malfunction type (alarm code). The stored malfunction messages can be called
up in inverse chronological order in the “Malfunction messages” menu.
The last (= most recent) is at the top of the list (no. 01), with all previous messages
shifted back by one place with each new incoming entry. The fifth malfunction
message is deleted whenever a new malfunction message arrives.
In case of a heat generator malfunction (alarm code 30-1 or 31-3) while the system
frost protection is active, the boiler start-up protection is switched off and the heating
circuit pumps are switched on to reduce the risk of freezing of the system.
The current measured value plus or minus the specified correction as well as the
new value appear on the display. The compensation steps amount to 0.5 K.
CAUTION The sensor circuits are adjusted at the factory with precise measurement
instruments. An adjustment is to be carried out only if it is determined that the
amount of the deviation is constant along the entire measurement range.
Settings which are not accessible through the set access code are preserved.
