QUALITY CONTROL AND PROJECT MONITORING FOR TOTAL

ASPHALTING FOR NON BLACK TOPPED ROADS BY PROVIDING
METALLING, ASPHALTING, SIDE DRAINS AND STRENGTHENING OF
SELECTED ROADS BY ASPHALT OVERLAY

MANDATORY REQUIREMENT FOR THE WORK

 ASPHALT WORK
 Contractor has produce original invoices as supplied by refinery for the grades of
bitumen procured.
 Frequent tests shall be carried out to confirm penetration grade
 Binder content shall be determined by taking samples from the completed works.
 EARTH WORK
 For earthwork in embankment Maximum dry density should not be less than
1.5gm/cc and for subgrade 1.8gm/cc
 Subgrade material shall be granular material of good CBR value (10-15%)
 Embankment to be prepared in layers not exceeding 200 mm compacted thickness.
Degree of compaction shall be 95% for embankment and 97% for subgrade.
 Vertical and Horizontal profile of the road alignment to be finalized and fixed.
 Slushy / unsuitable soil at the base to be removed.
 RCC /MASONRY WORKS
 Drain to follow the road profile in general.
 In masonry work key / bond stone / weep holes shall be provided as per specification.
 Quality of cement to be checked.
 Reinforcement with IS marking be used.
 Clear cover for reinforcement shall be kept as 50mm
 7 days minimum curing shall be ensured
 WBM works
 Subgrade top to be finished to correct gradient and camber and compacted properly
 Earthen shoulder shall be done at the same time for confinement
 Grading of metal to be ensured
 Dry spreading and compaction to correct thickness to be done.
 Spreading of correct quantity of murum (PI <10) shall be ensured.
 Levels and cross slope / camber of completed WBM surface shall be checked before
laying bituminous layers.
 Minimum 7 days drying of WBM surface is required before Black topping work is
taken up.
 BM and Pre Mix Chip Carpet
 Approved design mix to be followed
 Pot hole filling, Profile corrective course shall be done before laying Bituminous
layers.
 Marshall Stability , Bitumen content, Grading of aggregate and Field density tests
after compaction shall be carried out.
 Finished surface shall confirm to the correct profile.
 Edges of Bitumen layers shall be dressed to be in one line.
 Primer shall be applied using browsers. Further layers of Bituminous surface shall
be allowed only after the primer has dried out for 24 hours.
 Mix temperature of 130-160  C and laying temperature of 120 - 100 C and
rolling shall be completed before the temperature falls below 100 C.
 Paving to be done with mechanical pavers.
 Rolling to be done with 8 – 10 Ton roller form edge towards the center.
