What is literature?
Wardeh Leigh A. Navarro

Literature is a group of works composed of different forms of human

expression. It is mostly written, but some of its forms can also be spoken.

Usually, literature is defined as a collection of well-written poetry and prose,

which are the two general types of literature.

Poetry is a type of writing using melodious expressions in lines and

stanzas. It is written in verse, with measure and rhymes. Sometimes, it can

also be written in free form without the usual structure of rhyming.

Prose consists of sentences and paragraphs in writing a story. It is

usually written from an author’s own imagination to express ideas and

feelings. Prose can be written in a fictional or non-fictional setting. Stories

can be from the imagination or from one’s own experience.

Literature has a wide variety. Poems and novels are just some of its

examples. What can be defined is that literature is used as a tool for

self-expression.

suddenly picked up the plates and cleaned the table. Her face wears the look
of distress. His father got up and sat on the chair near the television and
listened more to the news. He was quiet. There was tension in the room.
