PERFECT RHYMES
Perfect rhyme means that both the ending
consonants (if any) and stressed vowel sounds of
two words match exactly.
EX: WELL, SELL

IMPERFECT RHYME/SLANT
RHYME

It refers to two words that rhyme in part, but


not perfectly.

EX: BRIDGE, FUDGE

EYE RHYME
An eye rhyme, also called a visual rhyme or a
sight rhyme, is a rhyme in which two words are
spelled similarly but pronounced differently.

EX: COME, HOME

INTERNAL RHYME

In poetry, internal rhyme, or middle rhyme,


is rhyme that occurs within a single line of verse,
or between internal phrases across multiple
lines.
EX: CHEERED, CLEARED

END RHYME

End rhyme is the rhyming of final syllables in


two or more lines of poetry.

EX: DAY, MAY

MASCULINE RHYME

When two words rhyme at the end of two lines


of poetry, and when those words' final syllables
are stressed, they are examples of masculine
rhyme.

EX: KEEP, DEEP

FEMININE RHYME
A feminine rhyme is a rhyme that
contains a stressed syllable followed by one or
more unstressed syllables.

EX: DANGLE, MANGLE

RICH RHYME

Occurs when the paired syllables or


words sound the same.

EX: BLUE, BLEW

IDENTICAL RHYME

Identical rhyme employs the same


word, identically in sound and in sense, twice in
rhyming positions.

EX: LAZY, LAZY

HALF RHYME
Two words that have only their final
consonant sounds and no preceding vowel or
consonant sounds in common.

EX: LAZE, MAZE

TYPES OF POETRY
SONNET
The sonnet is a popular classical form that has
compelled poets for centuries. Traditionally, the
sonnet is a fourteen-line poem written in iambic
pentameter, employing one of several rhyme
schemes, and adhering to a tightly structured
thematic organization.

HAIKU
The haiku is a Japanese poetic form that
consists of three lines, with five syllables in the
first line, seven in the second, and five in the
third.

BALLAD
A ballad is a type of poem that tells a story and
was traditionally set to music. English language
ballads are typically composed of four-line
stanzas that follow an ABCB rhyme scheme.
