Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY:

(M8GE-IIg-1): Determines the inverse, converse, and contrapositive of an if-then
statement.
I. OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson the students shall be able to:
a. transform conditional statement to its if-then form;
b. illustrate the converse, inverse and contrapositive of an if – then statement; and
c. show the equivalences of: (a) the statement and its contrapositive, and (b) the
converse and inverse of a statement.
II. SUBJECT MATTER:
A. TOPIC:
 Converse, Inverse and Contrapositive of an If-then Statement (Q2: Week 7 –
Module 7)
B. REFERENCES:
 Mathematics Grade 8 Quarter 2: Week 7 - Module 7 Converse, Inverse and
Contrapositive of an If-then Statement pages 1-22.
 Youtube Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RREo7-5XQ6A
C. MATERIALS:
 laptop, television, visual aids, and chalkboard.
D. Values Integration:
 patience, fortitude, teamwork

III. PROCEDURE:

Teacher’s Activity Learner’s Activity

Preliminary Activities
Opening Prayer
Let us all be in silence as we praise and
glorify Him through a prayer. The students will view and together
recite the prayer projected on their screen.
All: Good morning, sir!
Good morning class!
Checking of Attendance
Class Secretary is there any absentees today? Class Secretary: All present sir.

Reading Activity
Let us all read the Hypotheses of
Hippopotamus and Rhinoceros by Victoria
Smith. (Learners will read and answer their
REAS.)

Opening Activity
A video will be played in the television.
Remain seated while listening and together sing
the song as it plays along. (Learners will do the ice-breaker activity
being played in the television.)

Recall/Review
Let us review our past lessons about
hypothesis and conclusion. You will be grouped
according to the table arrangements of your
classroom. Identify the hypothesis and the
conclusion of each if-then statements.
1. If today is Friday, then tomorrow is
Saturday. Denmark:
p: If today is Friday
q: then tomorrow is Saturday.
Very good!
2. If a man is honest, then he does not steal.
Janrei:
p: If a man is honest
Excellent! q: then he does not steal.
3. If a number is even, then it is divisible by
2.
Jean:
p: If a number is even
Well done! q: then it is divisible by 2.
4. If Julia doesn’t water the plants, then the
plants will die.
Jamaica:
p: If Julia doesn’t water the plants
Very good! q: then the plants will die.
5. If Douglas does well in college, then he
will apply to medical school.
Gliyan:
p: If Douglas does well in college
q: then he will apply to medical school.
That is correct!

A. Activity
For our activity, let’s play a game called 4-
PICS-1-WORD. Provided are a set of hypotheses
and your task is to assume the conclusion. Five
(5) points will be given to the group if they can
answer it on the first picture clue, four (4) points
for the second picture clue, three (3) points for
the third picture clue and two (2) points for the
last picture clue.
1. p: If I will study well, (Learners answers may vary.)

q:

2. p: If school intramurals will open on

February,

q:

3. p: If I will do the household chores,

q:

B. Analysis
We have already learned how to transform a
statement into an equivalent if-then statement.
Now, how do we write the converse, inverse and
contrapositive of an if-then statement?

C. Abstraction
The converse of the if-then statement is
created when the hypothesis and conclusion are
reversed or interchanged.
The inverse of the if-then statement is when
both the hypothesis and conclusion are negated.
The contrapositive of the if-then statement is
a combination of the converse and the inverse.
The contrapositive is determined by reversing
the negation of both hypothesis and conclusion.
Examples:
1. If- Then Statement: If the weather is
nice, then I will wash the car.
Converse: If I will wash the car, then the
weather is nice.
Inverse: If the weather is not nice, then I
will not wash the car.
Contrapositive: If I will not wash the
car, then the weather is not nice.
2. If- Then Statement: If you take yoga,
then you are relaxed.
Converse: If you are relaxed, then you
take yoga.
Inverse: If you did not take yoga, then
you are not relaxed.
Contrapositive: If you are not relaxed,
then you did not take yoga.

IP and Culture Integration:

Hypothesis in Science and Research is an
educated guess. As defined by Meriam
Dictionary, it is
an assumption or concession made for the sake
of argument. As defined by Webster’s, it is an
interpretation of a practical situation or condition
taken as the ground for action.
Hypothesis is what our indigenous people are
using before to cure illnesses, to predict the
weather and many more. Let us take a look at
some examples. What could be the cause of
these?

Gerolyn: It is cursed.

Rizza: Conjoined twins which can be

superficial or medical error.

Jhedea: When there is lightning,

mushrooms are abundant.

(Learners answers may vary)

D. Application
Observe the following set of pictures.
Describe the pictures using if-then statements,
then rewrite into its converse, inverse and
contrapositive of statements.
1. I will get really happy if you…

Statement:
Converse:
Inverse:
Contrapositive:

2. If the weather is nice…

Statement:
Converse:
Inverse:
Contrapositive:

3. If I win some money, I will

Statement:
Converse:
Inverse:
Contrapositive:
Great job learners!

IV. EVALUATION: (15 points)

1. If you are in love, then you are inspired.

2. If two lines are parallel, then the two lines do not intersect.

V. ASSIGNMENT: (20 points)

Performance Task # 4:
In a clean sheet of bond paper, draw/cut/download 5 images that depict an if-then
statement. Write below the image the if-then statement with its corresponding converse, inverse
and contrapositive statements.
