Do not write on this sheet, except for your student number and your name.
Please return it in the end, together with your answer sheets.
Explain all your answers and present all necessary intermediate steps.
Answer dierent groups in dierent sheets, stating on the header of each answer sheet
which group you are answering to. Write your name and number in every sheet.
No questions are allowed. You are not allowed to use any kind of calculator. Your
cell phone should be turned o and put away for the duration of the exam.
This midterm is made up of 4 groups.

1. (6 points) State, and justify, if the following statements are true or false. If they are
false, present a counter-example. Each question is worth 1,5 points.

(a) Consider the two following propositions, A and B:

A : "x ¡ 2 ô x2 ¡ 4"
B: "x 3 2 ñ |x 3| 2"
Then, the proposition A _ B is false.

(b) If @M ¡0 , DnpM qPN : Un M for innitely many terms of order larger than npM q,
then Un is properly divergent in absolute value to positive innity.

(c) Consider the geometric progression Gn rn , where n P N and r P R. It is

known that the limit of the sequence of the partial sums associated with Gn is
8
°
equal to 4. Then, Gn is a divergent series.

(d) The limit of the sequence with general term Hn n3 1

n2 2
... n23n n is equal
to 32 .
2. (6 points) Consider the following sets of real numbers (where m ¡ 0):

A r3m, ms X pRzQq B N?2p2mq

(a) (1 p.) Is it possible that set A has a minimum, but not a maximum ? Justify.
(b) (1,5 p.) Let m be the supremum of the solution set of the inequality x x 1 ¡ 2x.
2

Find the set B zA, its exterior and its derived set. Show all your calculations
and justications.
?
(c) (1,5 p.) Find the value of m that ensures that 2m 2 is the inmum of A.
Justify.
(d) (2 p.) Let C be a non-empty subset of R, and k be an element of C . Consider
the three following propositions:
E: "Dε ¡ 0 : Nε pk q € C "
F: "k P closurepC q"
G: "k P deriv pC q"
Is the proposition “ F _ G ñ E” true or false? Justify.

3. (6 points) Consider the sequences whose general terms are given by Un 1 2n
and
Vn lim Un .
n

(a) (1 p.) Find Vn . Find as well the third term of the sequence of partial sums
associated with Vn .
(b) (1,5 p.) Is the proposition: " @ε ¡ 0, Dnpεq P N : |Vn lim Un | ε, @n ¥ npεq"
true or false? Explain the intuition behind your answer.
(c) (1 p.) Is U20n2 10 a subsequence of Un ? What is the value of lim U20n2 10 ?
Justify.
(d) (1 p.) Can we state that Dk P R : |Wn| k , where Wn Un Vn ? Justify.
2 4 .
(e) (1,5 p.) Using the previous answer and the Squeeze Theorem, nd lim nW n

4. (2 points) Lucy has innitely many friends. Last Sunday, she decided to invite all
her friends to a race along the river (from Algés to Carcavelos). Everyone was able
to complete the race. In the end of the race, Lucy drank 3 bottles of water. Her rst
friend drank a bottle of water, the second friend half a bottle, the third friend one
fourth of a bottle, and so on. We know that everyone drank some water, and that
every bottle had the same capacity. Lucy told her friends that they risked getting
dehydrated, because following that pattern she would end up drinking more water
than all her friends combined, and that 5 bottles would be enough for everyone. State
if Lucy's comment makes sense, using the concepts seen in class.
