Midterm Test 3

• Date: April 27, 2019

• Instructions:

a. The test has three questions.

b. Write your number and name and absolutely nothing else in this test, and hand it in
the end.

c. Answer the test on the answer sheets, stating the question you are answering, and
never answering more than one question in the same sheet.

d. The answer and draft sheets should not be unstapled.

e. If, for any reason, the space for answers is not enough, you may (and should) also
answer on the back of the sheets.

f. Show and justify all calculations.

g. No written support or calculators are allowed.

h. No individual questions about the exam will be answered.

i. The duration of the test is 1h 30m.

j. Break a leg (not literally)!

Midterm Test 3

1. (II, 3 val) Consider the following system of equations, with 𝛼, 𝛽 ∈ ℝ:

𝑥
(2 + 𝑧𝑒 𝑦−𝑧 ) = 𝛼
𝔼: { 3
𝛽 ln(𝑥 − 𝑦 − 𝑧) + 𝑧 2 = 1
It is known that the implicit function theorem allows to conclude that, at a neighborhood of
(𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) = (3,1,1), 𝔼 implicitly defines a function 𝑓 with expression 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑦(𝑥), 𝑧(𝑥)).
a. (1 val) Find the value of 𝛼 and the possible values of 𝛽.
b. (1 val) Knowing that 𝑧′(3) = −2, find the value of 𝛽.
c. (1 val) Without further calculations, state, justifying, if the first equation of 𝔼 implicitly
defines a function 𝑔 which transforms each (𝑥, 𝑧) at a neighborhood of (3,1) into a single
𝑦 at a neighborhood of 1.

2. (II, 3,5 val) Consider function 𝑓: ℝ2 → ℝ, defined by:

𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = 𝑥 4 + 𝑦 4 − (𝑥 − 𝑦)2
a. (1 val) Find the stationary points of 𝑓 (notice that 2(𝑥 − 𝑦) is in the two equations you will
obtain).
b. (1,5 val) State, justifying, if the stationary points you found in a. are local extremum
points of 𝑓. If so, state if they are maximizers or minimizers and find the respective
extrema.
c. (1 val) The extremum points you found in b. are local extremum points of |𝑓|? If so, are
they maximizers or minimizers? And are they global? Explain.

3. (II, 3,5 val) A cable to connect an electric plant on one side of a river to a factory on the other
side is going to be installed. The river has rectilinear margins and a constant width of 3 km.
The distance, on a straight line, between the plant and the factory is 5 km. Each meter of
cable installed on the land costs 𝟏€ and each meter of cable inserted into a tube on the
river’s surface costs √𝟏𝟎€. We are faced with the problem of finding out how to install the
cable in a way which minimizes the total installation cost and what will be the minimum cost.
a. (0,5 val) Show that, if 𝑥 is the length of cable installed along the margins (in km) and 𝑦 is
the length of cable which will be on the river’s surface (in km), then (4 − 𝑥)2 + 32 = 𝑦 2 .
b. (0,5 val) Mathematically formalize the problem so that we can find the combination of 𝑥
and 𝑦 which should be used to minimize the cable installation costs.
c. (2 val) Solve the problem using the Lagrange multipliers method.
d. (0,5 val) If the cost of installation of a meter of cable on the land changes from 1€ to
0.9€, how much does the minimum cost found in c. change, approximately?
