Midterm Test 1

• Date: March 2, 2019

• Instructions:

a. The test has three questions

b. Write your number and name and absolutely nothing else in this test, and hand it in
the end.

c. Answer the test on the answer sheets, stating the question you are answering, and
never answering more than one question in the same sheet.

d. The answer and draft sheets should not be unstapled.

e. If, for any reason, the space for answers is not enough, you may (and should) also
answer on the back of the sheets.

f. Show and justify all calculations.

g. No written support or calculators are allowed.

h. No individual questions about the exam will be answered.

i. The duration of the test is 1h 30m.

j. Break a leg (not literally)!

Calculus II 2018 – 2019 S2
Midterm Test 1

1. (3 val) Consider the following set 𝐴 ⊆ ℝ2 :

ln(𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 − 8)
𝐴 = {(𝑥, 𝑦) ∈ ℝ2 : ≥ 0}
𝑥−𝑦
a. (1 val) Graphically represent 𝐴.
b. (0,75 val) Analytically describe the interior, boundary and derived set of 𝐴.
c. (0,5 val) State, justifying, if 𝐴 is open, closed and bounded.
d. (0,75 val) Is 𝐴 a connected set? Justify.

2. (3 val) Consider function 𝑓: 𝐷𝑓 ⊆ ℝ2 → ℝ. It is known that, for any 𝑘 ∈ 𝑅𝑓 , the 𝑘 level set of 𝑓
𝛼
is the circle with centre (0,0) and radius √− ln(𝑘), with 𝛼 > 0.

a. (0,5 val) State, justifying, what is the range of 𝑓, 𝑅𝑓 .

1
b. (1,5 val) Consider that (1,0, 𝑒) belongs to the graph of 𝑓.

(i) (0,5 val) Show that 𝛼 = 1.

(ii) (1 val) Find 𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦), the general expression of 𝑓, and show that 𝐷𝑓 = ℝ2 ∖ {(0,0)}.

c. (1 val) Consider a function 𝐡: 𝐷𝐡 ⊆ ℝ2 → ℝ2 , defined by 𝐡(𝑥, 𝑦) = (𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦), 𝑔(𝑥, 𝑦)).

Knowing that 𝐷𝐡 is graphically represented below, find a possible expression for 𝑔(𝑥, 𝑦).

3. (4 val) Consider function 𝑓: ℝ2 → ℝ defined by:

(ln(𝑦 + 1) − 𝑥)𝑥3
if 𝑦 > 𝑒𝑥 − 1
𝑓(𝑥, 𝑦) = { 𝑥2 + 𝑦2
ln(𝑒𝑥 − 𝑦) if 𝑦 ≤ 𝑒𝑥 − 1
1
a. (1 val) Show that 𝑓 is continuous at (0,0) (it may be useful to know that, if |𝑦| ≤ 2,
|ln(𝑦 + 1)| ≤ 1).
b. (1 val) State, justifying, the continuity domain of 𝑓 (do not forget to study the points
(𝑎, 𝑒 𝑎 − 1), with 𝑎 ≠ 0).
c. (1 val) Find, if it exists, 𝑓𝑥′ (0,0).
d. (1 val) Find 𝐻𝑓 (0, −1), the hessian matrix of 𝑓 at (0, −1).
