Conditional

Sentences
Adalah bentuk kalimat bahasa Inggris untuk menyatakan pengandaian.
Dalam bahasa Indonesia, kita sering mengucapkan kalimat yang mana
tujuannya untuk mengandaikan sesuatu hal yang telah terjadi atau akan
terjadi.
“Andaikan saya pulang lebih cepat, maka saya tidak akan kehujanan.”
“Andai saya belajar lebih giat, maka saya bisa masuk universitas yang
saya inginkan.”
Kondisi-kondisi tersebut juga diatur penulisannya secara khusus
dalam bahasa Inggris, yang disebut dengan conditional sentences atau
kalimat pengandaian.

Composed by 2 parts (terdiri dari 2 bagian)
✶ one that expresses the condition (menyatakan kondisi)

– Introduced by the word “if”, commonly known as


“if clause”.
✶ one that expresses the consequence. (menyatakan
konsekuensi)
We use conditional sentences to describe how an action or
situation affects its result.
(kita menggunakan kalimat pengandaian untuk mendeskripsikan suatu aksi atau situasi yang
berdampak pada hasilnya)

example:If you work hard, you will succeed.

Sentences
There are 3 main types of conditional patterns.
✶ Pattern A (conditional type 1) : probable
condition (kondisi yang mungkin <terjadi>)
✶ Pattern B (conditional type 2) : improbable
condition (kondisi yang tidak mungkin <terjadi>)
✶ Pattern C (conditional type 3) : imaginary

condition (tidak terjadi sama sekali atau

khayalan)
Pattern A : Probable Condition
(kondisi nyata atau kemungkinan akan terjadi)
✶ Used for actions which are true or likely
to happen

Examples:
✶ If it rains tomorrow, we shall cancel the picnic.
✶ If the water boils, we shall turn off the
stove.
✶ You will be tired if you do a lot of
exercises.

• Note on pattern A:
If + present tense, future tense
Pattern B : Improbable
Condition

• Note on Pattern B:
if + past tense, would/should + verb
If + (s + v2), (s + would/should + verb1)
Pattern C : Imaginary
Condition

Examples:
If it had rained yesterday, I would have stayed at
home.

been attacked by a monster?

• Note on Pattern C:
if + past perfect, perfect conditional
• “Should/would + present perfect tense” is called perfect conditional.
